Determination of trace amounts of cadmium in sea water has been developed by a flameless atomic absorption method using a carbon rod atomizer. Sea water is diluted with isopropyl alcohl and the white salt formed is removed by filtration, then the filtrate is fed to the instrument as a sample for measurement. A complete separation of the salt is not needed in this pre-treatment. The effect of the residual salt can be avoided by separating the atomic absorption of cadmium and the molecular absorption of the residual salt by means of controlling the temperature and the time of ashing and atomization of the sample in the carbon rod. The repeatability and the accuracy are 2.0-8.5% in the coefficient of variation and 0.8-5.3%, respectively.

The rolling experiments of mild steel were carried out with a laboratory 2-high rolling mill using liquid wax oxidates, their methylesters, oils and fats, and mineral oils. The friction coefficients in rolling were calculated by Bland-Ford's method and the lubricity of liquid wax oxidates was discussed.
The results obtained could be summarized as follows:
    (1) The lubricity of liquid wax oxidates and their methylesters is nearly equal to that of oils and fats which have been used successfully as a rolling oil material.
    (2) The friction coefficient in rolling for liquid wax oxidates is smaller as the ester concent is higher.

The weatherabilities of several paving grade asphalts were studied by outdoor and accelerated tests.
    The following results were obtained.
    (1) By the two tests, penetration decreased, while S.P. and asphaltene content increased.
    (2) Having been weathered until the same penetration, the content of asphaltenes and the weight-loss of the outdoor test were more than those of the accelerated one.
    (3) The changes of the surface of asphalts by weathering were different between the two tests.
    (4) From these phenomena and our previous reports, we presumed the model of the weathering mechanism of asphalts (as typical visco-elastic material).
