Ethylbenzene was separated from a xylene mixture by the following steps. The ethyl group was transferred to toluene or xylenes. The ethylxylene was reacted with toluene to form ethyltoluene, which was reacted with benzene to reproduce ethylbenzene. Equilibrium constants for each reaction were determined and were related to the structure of ethyl group accepters. Experimental results for each step of ethylbenzene separation were compared with the equilibrium concentration calculated using the equilibrium constants.
