    The performance of zinc dialkyldithiophosphates as lubricating oil additives depends on their chemical structure, so increasing interest is being shown in the structural analysis of those compounds.
    This paper deals with the chromatographic separation and identification of zinc dialkyldithiophosphates having three to eight carbon atoms in the alkyl group. Very satisfactory separation of these zinc dialkyldithiophosphates was attained by partition paper chromatography using aniline as the stationary phase and n-heptane as the mobile phase. The Rf values increase with the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group. In case of zinc dialkyldithiophosphates having the same number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group, the Rf values decrease in the order of secondary, branched primary, straight primary alkyl group.
    The zinc dialkyldithiophosphates in lubricating oil additives were successfully identified by this method.
  • シリカゲルを担体とする銅-銀触媒によるアクロレインの合成について

    Study was made on catalytic action of Cu-Ag-SiO2 as used in synthesis of acrolein from propylene-vapor phase oxidation with air. The catalyst was prepared by calcination followed by activation of silica gel impregnated with aqueous solution of nitrates of copper and silver. The calcination was carried out for 3 hours at temperatures ranging from 800 to 900°C to obtain the most desirable surface condition. The activation was accomplished by reducing the calcined catalyst with hydrogen or propylene at 340°C for 2 hours. The catalyst thus prepared was tested for activity using a mixed feed composed of propylene (27.5%), oxygen (7.8%), nitrogen (34.6%) and steam (30.1%) at space velocity of 4, 100∼4, 200hr-1. The catalyst reduced with propylene gave the maximum conversion of propylene of 6.2% at 330°C and the best selectivity for acrolein of 58% at 310°C. The catalyst reduced with hydrogen was found to give the conversion of 6.5% with the selectivity of 50% at 310°C. These experimental results led us to an assumption that the selectivity depends on the surface condition of carrier and Cu-Ag components and that the rate of conversion depends on reduction of catalyst.

    A rapid and accurate measuring method of automobile engine oil consumption by measuring of 35S contents in engine exhaust was investigated. We used dibenzyldisulfide, dibutyldisulfide and vulcanized oleic acid as 35S labelled compounds.
    Through engine running we tested the combustibility of these labelled compounds using gasoline in which 0.06wt% of them added. By these tests, it was seen that a part of combustion products of labelled compound forms deposits on piston head in such order as 19wt% for dibenzyldisulfide, 0.8wt% for vulcanized oleic acid and 0.6wt% for dibutyldisulfide as 35S.
    Using engine oil in which above compounds were added, dibutyldisulfide concentration in engine oil decreased exponentially with engine running time. But in the case of vulcanized oleic acid, the concentration was constant except in early stages of running. The oil consumption measured using this vulcanized oleic acid checked with that by level gauge method.
