The performance of zinc dialkyldithiophosphates as lubricating oil additives depends on their chemical structure, so increasing interest is being shown in the structural analysis of those compounds.
This paper deals with the chromatographic separation and identification of zinc dialkyldithiophosphates having three to eight carbon atoms in the alkyl group. Very satisfactory separation of these zinc dialkyldithiophosphates was attained by partition paper chromatography using aniline as the stationary phase and
n-heptane as the mobile phase. The
Rf values increase with the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group. In case of zinc dialkyldithiophosphates having the same number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group, the
Rf values decrease in the order of secondary, branched primary, straight primary alkyl group.
The zinc dialkyldithiophosphates in lubricating oil additives were successfully identified by this method.
