After reviewing the technical components of electronic libraries, several projects carried out in Japan and USA are examined mainly in terms of the differences in their approaches, emphases of functions, contents and users. Then, technical limitations of the present systems are pointed out, and current research efforts to overcome those limitations to have more user-friendly systems are reviewed with an indication of future directions of research.

Information retrieval functions in digital libraries have a different context from those in searching commercial databases or OPACs. After defining digital libraries focussing on their types, this paper describes the characteristics of browsing methods from several aspects. The method is indispensable as a means of accessing the needed information. Because digital libraries should be user-oriented, browsing should reflect the information-seeking behavior of human beings. The retrieval functions, however, should not be limited to browsing but ordinary Boolean search methods are also necessary. Printed materials and microfilms are converted into electronic form using OCR in the digital library environment. It is inevitable that digital documents produced by scanning and OCR contain recognition errors. As a result, if keywords contained in digital documents are misspelled, they will cause mismatching during a search. This paper also deals with the approximate matching principle based on n-gram, which is supposed to solve such problems.

With the rapid growth of the Internet, a number of information services are now evolving. For the construction of information services, several technologies like WAIS, Gopher and WWW are used as their fundamental mechanism. Especially, since WWW has become the most popular system on the Internet in these days, several keen technologies for both multimedia information handling and several security functions to enable the “Electronic Commerce” type of services are integrated into the WWW system. This article looks how these popular systems for information services on the Internet are working, and discusses their implications for the digital library challenges.

In this article, digital libraries and networks are discussed. Digital libraries, a kind of information server on the Internet, have now been realized. Information retrieval is a very important function of digital libraries. Conceptual information retrieval has also been introduced. One direction of the future of digital libraries is the distributed digital library, which integrates digital libraries on the Internet. The distributed digital library is also discussed. The Internet has received much attention in recent years. In this article, data transmission between publishers and digital libraries is estimated.

This paper describes document delivery services on digital library systems, focusing on the electronic delivery service of scientific research papers and articles. Some operational delivery services are described. The term “electronic document delivery” actually covers broader applications relating to electronic publishing which became a reality after the advent of the Internet and the World Wide Web. The arrangements of the social/economic system for electronic publishing, however, are still undetermined and the copyright issues and the use charges for electronic document delivery services are an open question. This paper addresses these issues, too. Commonly used World Wide Web browsers are not ideal tools for document delivery and their shortcomings are discussed to develop future document delivery systems.

Western library circles are actively engaged in experimentation and research for the establishment of digital libraries, which they perceive as vital to ensuring their survival and further development in the advanced information society of the 21st century. Developing the technology to digitize vast amounts of information to supply digital libraries is no less important than establishing the technological groundwork for digital libraries. This paper chiefly expounds upon the digitization of materials.

In an age of computers and networks, the information services, even the traditional libraries, extend their territories towards the digital information media. In this article, we discuss the copyright issues of these media in terms of the information services. The mechanisms of copyright protection are based on the cost-benefit balances of reproduction. Compared with the reproduction cost of the conventional paper medium, that of the digital information media is so cheap that it is now difficult to protect the copyright of digital information. On the Internet, the anonymity of the authors makes it easy for the readers to violate the copyright without a sense of guilt. Though the information centers and the publishers need to address these problems immediately, the prospects are unclear for the time being.
