The library at the Nippon Roche Research Center (NRRC) was renovated in 1996-1997 according to the “New Library Plan” established in May, 1996. The plan aims to redefine the library from a “storage of books” to a “function contributing to the goals of the organization.” The role of the library has shifted from “collection and accumulation” to “retrieval, user training and information services.” The quality of the library will be measured by the contribution made towards the accomplishment of the organization's goals rather than by the number of collections it has. The reengineering of library services has been accelerated by the application of information technology. The introduction of the Internet/intranet has enabled the library to provide services at user desktops, and the implementation of a library system with a web interface has significantly raised the efficiency of the workflow. The process realized an initial step in the integration of the library and in-house information services, previously independent groups but basically both providers of information to clients. This paper summarizes the concept, results and future aims of the “New Library Plan” we have executed at our research center.
