Some common problems suffered by Japanese university libraries and possible ways of solving them will be summarized first. Japan is now shifting rapidly toward prominent longevity in society; the life expectancy of Japanese people is already the longest in the world, and the population of eldery citizens, particularly that of the centenarians, is increasing quickly. The greatest concern of the society is, therefore, reduction of morbidity and prevention of disability of the elderly. For this reason, the importance of primary health science (i. e., the knowledge of prevention of age-related disease and health promotion) is becoming much greater. In comparison with medical therapeutics and secondary health science, the systematization of primary health science has been immature, but in the near future, this may become the most important field of health science.
