    The number of chromosomes in root tip cells of Lyeoris albiflora KOIDZ. was confirmed to be 17, among which 5 are large and V-shaped and the other 12 are rod-shaped. Those V-shaped chromosomes have a constriction or an achromatic bridge at a point a little off the middle of the chromosomes (Figs. 1 and 9).
    In the pollen mother cells of this plant 5 V-shaped and 12 rodshaped chromosomes can also be found in a late heterotypic prophase. The two arms of every V-shaped chromosome loosely conjugate with one of a pair of rod-shaped chromosomes respectively, both members of the pair usually being free from each other, and the remaining two of the rod-shaped chromosomes conjugate with each other to form a bivalent (Figs. 2 and 3). As the result of this peculiar mode of conjugation there are formed 6 chromosomal elements in metaphase, namely, 5 chromosome complexes composed of a V-shaped and two rod-shaped elements and one normal bivalent consisting of two rod-shaped ones (Figs. 4, 5 and 6).
    Five species of the genus Lycoris, -L. sanguinea MAXIM., L. aurea HERB., L. albiflora KOIDZ., L. racliata HERB. and L.squamigera MAXIM., -have 22 (all rod-shaped), 12 (2 rod-shaped and 10 V-shaped) or 13 (4 rod-shaped and 9 V-shaped), 17 (12 rod-shaped and 5 V-shaped), 33 (all rod-shaped) and 27 (21 rod-shaped and 6 V-shaped) chromosomes respectively in their root tip cells. If we count every V-shaped chromosome as two under the assumption that it consists of two rod-shaped chromosomes joining with each other at their ends, the number of chromosomes in L. aurea, L. albiflora and L. squamigera would be 22 (=2+2×10 or 4+2×9), 22 (=12+2×5) and 33 (=21+2×6) respectively, and all the species can be regarded as plants with the fundamentel number 11 in which the chromosomes are all rod-shaped.
    The mode of the chromosome conjugation in the heterotypic division in L. albiflora shows that each of the arms of a V-shaped chromosome is homologous to a rod-shaped chromosome which conjugates with it.
    The number and shape of chromosomes and their behaviour in the heterotypic division suggest that this plant may be a natural hybrid raised between two species, L. sanguinea and L. aurea the former of which carries 11 rod-shaped chromosomes (Fig.11) and the latter 5 V-shaped and a rod-shaped ones (Fig.10) in their haploid sets.
