From the external characters, the study being stressed on length, width, weight, color shades, and forms, ergots may be divided into several groups. The grouping, as a whole, seems to coincide with the natural affinity of the host plants, although a further study remains in certain group.
In Poaeoideae-Hordeeae, the ergots of
Secale cereale, Agropyron semicostatum, and
Elymus dahuricus are similar each other, but the ergot of
E. mollis is distinct from the group.
In Poaeoideae-Festuceae, the ergot of
Festuca rubra is apparently classified in the
Secale-group, and the ergots of three species of
Phragmites are quite different from it, forming another group.
Calamagrostis Epigeios var.
densiflora, only one plant belonging to Agrostoideae-Agrostideae, has very small sized ergot which will be distinguishable from other groups.
The ergot of
Zoysia japonica (
Claviceps yanagawaensis TOGASHI) in Panicoideae-Zoysieae is distinctly different from others in many respects.
In Panicoideae-Andropogoneae, the ergot of
Spodiopogon sibiricus shows characteristics unconformable to any of the groups. The ergots of two species of
Miscanthus form a distinct group.
