    d-Abscisic acid (ABA) does not affect the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-induced curvature in the standard Avena coleoptile test at a dosage level of IAA which gives a linear doseresponse curve, while ABA is inhibitory in the neighborhood of the saturation dosage of IAA. Consequently the need to remove ABA from samples to be subjected to this test for the estimation of auxins is eliminated.

    Whole embryos of Pinus resinosa excised at various stages of development and cultivated in vitro showed different degrees of potential for growth and differentiation. The influence of physico-chemical environment was maximum during the early stage of development. The suspensor cells could be induced to form budding embryos, or their growth could be arrested. The growth of the suspensor or its lack in vitro was a function of physiological response. Segments of embryos cultivated in vitro showed gradients in potentiality for differentiation in relation to their positions in the embryo and also within themselves in relation to . their basal and apical ends. Alternative developmental sequences were observed during regeneration in the segments. The experiments also showed that polyembryony was due to constitutional potentialities in the young embryonic tissue and thus all the cells of an embryonic group could be considered as “embryo initials” under appropriate environmental conditions.

    The major pigment, which was formerly isolated from the calyx and bract of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) by Yamamoto et al. (1933), was reported to have the structure of delphinidin pentosido-glucoside. It was newly examined and found that it consists of each 1mol of delphinidin (1mol), glucose and xylose. By a series of analytical procedure its structure must be delphinidin 3-xylosido-glucoside. So it was compared with daphniphyllin (delphinidin 3-xylosido-glucoside), which was isolated from the berries of Daphniphyllum macropodum Miq. and it revealed their identity. Hence, the name “hiviscin”. once given to this substance, must be eliminated from the literature.
    As minor pigments, a small amount of delphinidin 3-monoglucoside, cyanidin 3-monoglucoside (chrysanthemin) and delphinidin were also isolated in crystalline state from dried calyx and bract.

    The germination of chrysanthemum pollen in vitro is promoted by adding steroid hormones, especially androgens such as testosterone, 4-androstene-3, 17-dione, androstenolone and androsterone, and phytosterols such as diosgenin and stigmasterol, to a basal medium consisting of sucrose and boric acid. These compounds may not be identical with the germination promoting substance (GPS) of chrysanthemum pollen, because the Rf-values of steroids in various developing solvents are different from those of the latter.

    Two-celled annellospores have been found for a second time; they occur in Wardomyces simplex Sugiyama, Kawasaki, and Kurata, a hyphomycete isolated from milled rice in Japan, as well as in Wardomyces dimerus by Gams in 1968. The original description of W. dimerus Gams agrees with that given for W. simplex. Three additional strains isolated from milled rice and human resected lung samples are also assigned to W. simplex.

    The karyological studies were made on the fourteen species of mosses belonging to six genera. The metaphase, anaphase and heteropycnotic chromosomes in mitotic cells of gametophytes were observed. Chromosome numbers of the eight species, Hypopterygium fauriei, Campylium rufochryseum, Rhynchostegium polystictum, Entodon angustifolius, E. curvatirameus, E. viridulus, Plagiothecium splendens and P. sp. are reported for the first time by the present writers. Chromosomes numbers of two species, Hypopterygium japonicm and Plagiothecium silvaticum, are different from those reported by the previous workers and those of the remaining four species coincide with the number by the previous investigators. The intraspecific euploidy and aneuploidy were found in Hypopterygium fauriei and Plagiothecium silvaticum respectively. The euploid and aneuploid were confirmed through the comparison of the karyotypes of each taxon. By the comparison among karyotypes, the interspecific relation in every genus was also presumed.
