The investigation of physical strength/athletic capability in 2009 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science, and Technology suggested that the physical strength levels of children exhibited a tendency to improve, but they were still low compared with those in 1985.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physical strength and the percentage of body fat(Fat%), bone mass, dietary and exercise habits in children, and was to investigate their physical traits and life styles which significantly affect their physical strength. We measured body composition, bone mass by supersonic wave method, and physical strength, and also investigated a dietary habit and exercise frequency in 715 elementary school children(male 368, female 347). Physical strength had a significant negative correlation with Fat%, but had a significant positive correlation with bone mass and with exercise duration per week in both genders. A significant negative correlation was found between Fat% and the measurement record of each physical strength, and a significant positive correlation was found between bone mass and the measurement record of each physical strength in both genders respectively. Also a significant positive correlation was found between some measurement records of each physical strength and exercise duration per week in both genders respectively. The data showed that age, body weight and bone mass was a positive factor, while Fat% was a negative factor in related to their physical strength. The girls with higher scores of physical strength have good habits of drinking milk every day and eating break-fast main-dishes, and the higher-score boys have good habits of eating main-dishes in lunch and/or side-dishes for every meal.

Finally, for the children of high physical strength, it was shown that they have higher lean body mass, longer exercise duration, and well-balanced diet.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between sexual behaviors and psychosocial factors (e.g. self-management skills) among university students. In December 2009, an anonymous self-reported questionnaire survey was administered to 107 students (46 men and 61 women, the age mean and standard deviation was 20.0±1.3) in one of the national universities in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The dependent variables were sexual intercourse and sexual safety. The independent variables were sex, age, self-management skills, social skills and self-esteem.

The main results were as follows.

    1) The percentages of those who had ever experienced sexual intercourse were 58.7% for male students and 60.7% for female students and there was no statistical difference between the two percentages. The percentage significantly increased in proportion to increase in age.

    2) The percentages of those who had practiced safe sex were 59.3% for male students and 86.5% for female students and there was a significant difference.

    3) There were significant positive relationships between self-management skills, social skills and self-esteem. But there was no significant relationship between self-management skills and "communication skills", which was a subscale of social skills. This implies that self-management skills do not have a strong relationship with skills for communication.

    4) The results of the logistic regression analysis significantly showed that older students with low self-management skills and high social skills tended to have experience of sexual intercourse. The odds ratios were 1.61 for age, 0.80 for self-management skills and 1.10 for social skills. No independent variables related to sexual safety except that women tended to exercise safety more than men did.

These results imply the possibility of the effectiveness of enhancing self-management skills in sexual education to prevent a too-early sexual debut.

Background: “Health Consultation Activity” was recognized as a specific role of the Yogo teacher in a report published by the council for health and physical education in 1997. To enhance the effectiveness of this roles, Yogo teacher has that it is essential to establish an assessment that can be employed within “Health Consultation Activity” to facilitate the quick identification of health problems.

Purpose: To define routine health assessment within “Health Consultation Activity” using documents published within the medical and nursing sciences.

Hypothesis: This study focused on an examination of health assessment conducted by Yogo teacher during “Health Consultation Activity” and health assessment in medicine and nursing to identify common points.

Method: We performed an Internet search for domestic and foreign articles using the key words “health consultation activity,” “health assessment,” “physical assessment,” and “school children” for documents from 1970 to 2010.

Results: A search of NDL-OPAC yielded 1 article. A search of Pub-Med yielded 132 articles. A general search of NDL-OPAC yielded 10 articles.

Discussion: Documents obtained through Internet search revealed the following:

1)Health assessments conducted by Yogo teacher through “Health Consultation Activity” have points in common with health assessments in medicine and nursing.

2)Four concepts of health assessment related to “Health Consultation Activity” of the Yogo teacher from the search of the literature, physical assessment, psychological assessment, social assessment, and lifestyle assessment.

3)It was suggested that health assessment through “Health Consultation Activity” facilitated the early detection of health problems in school children, analysis of background factors, health education and individual treatment support.

The aim of this study was to estimate trends in selected health-risk behaviors among Japanese high school students in Okinawa prefecture from 2002 through 2008.

The study samples were 2,852 students from 25 public high schools in 2002, 2,892 students from 25 public high schools in 2005, and 3,248 students from 29 public high schools in 2008. Data from self-administered surveys were analyzed to assess linear and quadratic trends in the percentage of students who engaged in selected health-risk behaviors. Behaviors studied included those that contribute to injuries, cigarette use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual behaviors, and dietary behaviors.

There was a significant linear increase in seatbelt use and decrease in a ride with drinking driver. Among girls, motorcycle helmet use has linearly increased. On the other hand, carrying a weapon among boys has increased over time. The trends in lifetime cigarette use, early initiation of cigarette use, current cigarette use, current frequent cigarette use, and smoking more than 10 cigarettes per day decreased over time. Specifically, in girls, the prevalence of current cigarette use, current frequent cigarette use, and smoking more than 10 cigarettes per day declined considerably from 2002 to 2005 and then leveled off from 2005 to 2008. Lifetime alcohol use, early initiation of alcohol use, current alcohol use, and episodic heavy drinking also decreased over time. However, those who have been offered, sold, or given an illegal drug by someone increased. A significant linear decrease in sexual experience was detected. Among students who had had sexual intercourse, condom use during their last sexual intercourse increased over time. In boys, the prevalence of condom use increased from 2002 to 2005 and then decreased slightly from 2005 to 2008. Among girls, the prevalence of describing themselves as overweight decreased linearly, and unhealthy weight control behaviors such as the use of diet pills and forcing oneself to vomit decreased from 2002 to 2005, then increased slightly from 2005 to 2008.

This study shows that overall many health-risk behaviors among high school students in Okinawa improved between 2002 and 2008. Conversely, having been offered, sold, or given an illegal drug overall and carrying a weapon among boys found to deteriorate over time.
