The zero-magnon line for the transition

4T1 in anti-ferromagnetic MnF
2 are studies in the frameworks of the crystal field theory, including the field or orthorhombic symmetry, the spin-orbit interaction, and the exchange interaction in the from of an effective magnetic field. It is discussed that, although the argument of Dietz, Misetich and Guggencheim Seems to be effectively correct, the inclusion of the Vibronic Interaction is necessary for the correct understanding of the microscopic origin of the zero-magnon lines.

The low temperature specific heats of La–Y alloys have been measured in order to investigate the origin of superconductivity in lanthanum. The addition of yttrium to lanthanum was found to result in a large decrease of the electronic specific heat coefficient γ, a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature
Tc and a gradual increase of the Debye temperature
ΘD. The rate of increase of
ΘD in the yttrium-rich hcp phase was observed to be appreciably larger than in the α-La phase. The effective interaction derived from the BCS formula was found to remain approximately constant in the α-La phase followed by a rapid decrease in the hcp phase. From the general trend of the measured and derived quantities with alloying, it is suggested that the superconductivity of lanthanum may be closely related to mechanism leading to the depression of the Debye temperature and the stabilization of the α-La structure. This implies that phonon processes are of importance in the enhancement of superconductivity.

Observations of the “diffusion size effect” in bismuth at liquid helium temperatures were used to study recombination of electrons and holes in the bulk and at the surface. Recombination at the surface dominates at high magnetic fields. The transverse magnetoresistance extrapolated to infinite thickness clearly follows an H
2 dependence in the classical high magnetic field region. The partial mobilities μ
2 and ν
3 were calculated to have the values μ
2=1.8×10
6 cm
2/V-sec and ν
3=2.3×10
6 cm
2/V-sec, when reduced for a resistivity ratio of about 160. Surface recombination velocities due to interband transitions are calculated to be greater than the velocities of sound, and they exhibit a magnetic field dependence, approaching 4×10
5 cm/sec at infinite magnetic field. Values for the surface recombination velocity and the electron hole recombination time due to interband transitions are presented for the different configurations. For the magnetic field parallel to the trigonal axis, the bulk recombination time is ∼6.5×10
−9 sec.

n is varied. The fact that

dE is nearly unity shows that
E represents the relative height of the Fermi level. We notice the discrepancies between
Θe⁄
k and (

Qe⁄
k and (
Remark: Graphics omitted.) which suggest that the conduction band is not rigid. Taking these discrepancies into consideration, the experimental data are analized with the formal theory of the degenerate electron gas under the spherical band model. The analyses show that the data are almost consistent with the picture; the effective mass increases with increasing electron energy (non-parabolic band) and also increases with excess Ag content, while the relaxation time is nearly constant.

A photosensitive electron spin resonance signal due to an ionized red-copper luminescence center in Cu-activated ZnS phosphors has been investigated. The excitation spectrum, pulse annealing effect, and isothermal decay of the resonance signal were measured. The observed excitation spectrum indicates that the ionization process of the red-copper center takes place subsequently to the transition of an electron from the Cu
+ level to the S
2− vacancy level in the center. By the detection of the red component of thermoluminescence in the phosphors the red-copper luminescence is shown to be accompanied by a long phosphorescence. The good agreement is obtained between the temperature (140°K) where the thermal bleaching of the ionized spin center occurs and that where the ‘red’ thermoluminescence peak is observed. The isothermal decay curve of the resonance signal shows that the decay process from the ionized state to the ground state is not governed by a simple bimolecular kinetics. On the basis of these results and the behaviors of the Fe
3+ and Cr
+ signals observed simultaneously, the charge transfers accompanied by the red-copper luminescence are discussed.

Six resonance lines due to two non-equivalent positions for each N
14 nucleus in addition to the nonaxial symmetry of the crystalline field gradient which gives rise to three resonance transitions, (

II at 77°K. Observed recovery of the intensity of the resonance lines after pumping was found to be expressible as the sum of two exponential terms. Two paramagnetic species produced in AgNO
3 by gamma-irradiation at room temperature were identified to O
3− and NO
2, and direction cosines of principal axes of these centers with respect to the crystal axes were determined. From these results, it was confirmed that both O
3− and NO
2 were trapped with definite directions in the NO
3− vacancies and their radical planes were nearly the same as those of NO
3− ions, but the definite directions of these two radicals are different from each other. Moreover, super hyperfine interactions of O
3− with neighboring Ag nuclei were studied by ENDOR.

The intrinsic switching path for the electric field enforced transition from antiferroelectric to ferroelectric states has been computed for the simple Kittel linear antiferroelectric. The generalized switching curves give values of the polarization, free energy, and dielectric susceptibility as a function of applied field for a number of different antiferroelectric stabilities. The switching curves are qualitatively similar to those in real perovskite antiferroelectrics, and the possible extension of the treatment to real materials is discussed.

Saturation magnetization and roll magnetic anisotropy were measured for several single- and poly-crystals of 18 Cr-12 Ni-70 Fe alloy as functions of roll reduction in various crystallographic directions. It was found that the saturation magnetization increases as the roll reduction does for a polycrystal, (001) [100], (001)[110] and (110)[1\bar10] rollings, whereas it never increases for the (110) [001] rolling. This means that martensitic transformation does not take place for this rolling. The direction of easy magnetization was parallel to the roll direction for a polycrystal, (001) [100] and (110) [1\bar10] rollings, while it was normal to the roll direction in the case of (001) [110] rolling until it was changed to parallel at about 60% reduction.
Powder patterns on the surface of the rolled specimen showed that most of the martensitic transformation took place at the intersections of crossed slip bands which are parallel to {111} planes. A variation of saturation magnetization with martensitic transformation by cooling was also measured for polycrystals from room temperature to 77°K. The mechanism of the transformation is discussed in terms of the dislocation theory.

The change in the state of polarization of light when it passes through an anisotropic solution is studied for arbitrary states of polarization of incident light. It is shown that the change in the polarization state, described in terms of the Stokes’ parameters, can be generated by a 4×4 matrix
H. Each element of the matrix
H is a function of the wavelength of incident light and is connected with some quantum mechanical matrix elements of molecules which constitute the solution. Eight out of 16 elements of
H are connected with a tensor (
pi)
0n(
pj)
n0 and describe the usual dichroic nature of the solution. The other eight elements of
H are connected with a tensor (
ri)
0n(
pjrk)
n0. Decomposing this tensor into irreducible ones, one pseudo-scalar (the rotational strength) and one five-dimensional tensor are obtained. A new method of observation by which the elements of the five-dimensional tensor can be measured without being masked by the usual dichroism is presented.

Far-infrared spectra of quinolinium-(TCNQ)
2, bipyridinium-(TCNQ)
2, 4-amino-2,3,5,6-tetramethyl anilinium-(TCNQ)
2, cobalticinium-(TCNQ)
2, triethylammonium-(TCNQ)
2, lithium-(TCNQ) and TCNQ alone were observed at room temperature. The absorption peaks of the spectra were discovered at 296 cm
−1 for all TCNQ salts. The absorption edges were found at about 40 cm
−1 for all samples except Li(TCNQ) alone. The intensity change in the vicinity of the edges varied in parallel with the electrical conductivity at room temperature. These edges are interpreted as due to the direct allowed transition from a ground state to an excited band on the basis of the fact that the absorption coefficient
k is proportional to (ν−ν
G)
1⁄2. Here ν shows the wave-number of incident light and ν
G is a constant. Three absorption lines were found at 219 cm
−1, 143 cm
−1, and 114 cm
−1 in the TCNQ spectra.
A model, in which the excited band is a conduction band, seems to provide a consistent explanation of the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibilities is also discussed.

A high resolution infrared spectroscopy of the Stark effect of H
2CO and HDCO by using a magnetically tunable infrared-maser (laser) is reported. The output frequency of the He–Xe laser centered at 2850.6 cm
−1 is tuned within ±6GHz to observe Stark patterns of vibration-rotation lines of formaldehyde in the electric field up to 44 kV/cm. Some of the lines have been assigned from their Stark effects. The observed Stark shift,
K-type doubling, intensity change of the forbidden transition with the Stark field, and the assignment of lines are discussed in connection with the molecular constants of H
2CO and HDCO.

The stability of a two-dimensional unsteady flow of an incompressible viscous fluid is investigated by the method of small perturbation. Asymptotic behavior of the correlation function of a randomly modulated oscillator is examined. When the frequency modulation is a stationary stochastic process such as a Gaussian process or a Poisson impulse, it is proved that the correlation function approaches asymptotically to a simple exponential function, the coefficients of which can be given in an explicit form.
