Conversion electrons following
150,152,154Sm(α,
xn)
150∼156Gd reactions were measured at 40 and 36 MeV alpha energies. The ground-state band transitions up to spins
I≈12 in the
154Gd nuclei and a number of prominent transitions in odd mass Gd nuclei were observed.The measurement of the anisotropy was made for the conversion electrons of the ground-state band transitions in the
154Gd, and the the spin alignment of the ground-state band levels was obtained. The intensities and the angular distributions of the conversion electrons are discussed in terms of the reaction mechanism and the nuclear model.

The Li
7+α→α+α+
t and the Li
6+α→α+α+
d reactions were studied with 29.4 MeV alpha-particles by detecting various pairs of final particles in coincidence. In the two-dimensional coincidence spectra, several resonances corresponding to the excited states of Li
7, Li
6 and Be
8 were observed. When the resonances overlap each other, enhancement of the cross section seems to occur.
Decay correlations for the 4.63 MeV and 6.56 MeV states of Li
7 and for the 2.18 MeV state of Li
6 were measured in and out of the reaction plane. Strong azimuthal anisotropy with respect to the direction of the recoil nucleus was found. DWBA calculations of the decay correlations are in fairly good agreement with the experimental results, and the spin-parities of the 4.63 MeV and the 6.56 MeV states of Li
7 are assigned to be 7/2– and 5/2–, respectively.
Slight difference between the yields of particles emitted to opposite directions in the rest frame of the 4.63 MeV state of Li
7 was found. The Moment method analysis suggests that this difference is mainly due to the effect of the background non-resonant waves.

The effects of the orbital degeneracy on the condition of the existence of a localized moment are discussed by using Anderson’s model Hamiltonian, and essentially different characters between the singlet orbital case and the degenerate orbital case are emphasized. It is shown that the lowest energy solution of the Hartree-Fock approximation is restricted to the low density limit—(all the levels are nearly filled or nearly empty)—for sufficiently small s-d mixing, and the magnetic moment on the impurity atom changes the value with a step of nearly 1 Bohr’s magneton. The correlation effect is also estimated for the low density limit, and it is shown that the Hartree-Fock solution is a good first order approximation for the degenerate orbital case.

On the basis of the band model, high field susceptibilities for ferromagnetic iron metal and its alloys with cobalt, nickel, chromium and vanadium are estimated at 0°K, by making use of the density of states curve, determined from the experimental data of the low temperature specific heat and saturation magnetization. A satisfactory agreement between the calculated and observed results on the concentration dependences of the susceptibility is obtained for iron-cobalt and iron-nickel alloys. The dependences on temperature and magnetic field of the susceptibility are calculated by the model of non-interacting free spin waves. The observed temperature dependence of the susceptibility is explained by the calculated result.

The zero-magnon lines in the 3800Å region and in the near infrared region of the antiferromagnetic FeF
2 are studied in the framework of the crystal field theory, including the spin-orbit interaction and the molecular field. Assignment of the zero-magnon line in the near infrared region is made within this framework. Inclusion of some other effects is, however, necessary for the consistent understanding of the microscopic origin of the zero-magnon lines in the 3800Å region.

A theory is developed on the effects of exciton-magnon interactions on the spin-allowed optical transitions in antiferromagnets and is applied to near infrared absorptions in FeF
2. Intensities and polarization characteristics of the one- and two-magnon sidebands and the shift and broadening of the zero-magnon line are treated. Recent experimental results are discussed in the light of this theory. The effect of exciton-phonon interactions in FeF
2 are also discussed qualitatively.

Copper whiskers of [100], [110] and [111] orientation in the diameter (
d) range of 30–400 microns are tested in tension. The deformation characteristics of these whiskers are found to be between fine whisker (
d<30 microns) and bulk single crystal behaviour. Even though there is no conspicuous yield drop, the maximum flow stress reached in some orientations is comparable to the yield stresses observed in fine whiskers. The yield strength decreases with increasing diameter.

The strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress in iron and iron alloys was studied over wide range of strain rate below room temperature. The main results obtained are as follows.
(i) The experimental method to decompose the flow stress into the effective stress and the internal stress was shown
(ii) Both the Johnston-type power low and the rate equation were well satisfied if described in terms of the effective stress.
(iii) Such a decomposition of flow stress was found to be very useful in analysis of such effects as solution hardening and work hardening.

The spin-lattice relaxation times of vanadium-titanium and niobium-zirconium alloys have been measured as a function of temperature at severa magnetic fields in the superconducting phase. It has been found that above 1/4
Tc the temperature dependence is according to the BCS theory while for lower temperatures the relaxation rates are faster and are proportional to the magnetic field. Extrapolating 1⁄
T1 to
H=0 gives the expected BCS values. This behavior is accounted for by the presence of fluxoids in the metals. Also, from the experimental results the coherence lengths can be estimated.

Electrical conduction of a charge transfer complex between pyrene and iodine is studied by ac method. Frequencies used are from 1.0×10
3 to 2.4×10
10 Hz at the temperature region from 80°K to 330°K. The conductivity of the complex is expressed as σ=σ
d+σ
ω; σ
d is independent of frequency, σ
ω dependent on frequency. Above 250°K, σ
d predominates and below 150°K, σ
ω predominates in σ in the frequency region of the measurement. It is suggested that σ
d is due to the unpaired electrons in conduction state since the activation energy of conductivity and that of spin density are the same value of 0.14 eV and the conductivity shows no frequency dispersion at the higher temperatures. σ
ω is due to the localized unpaired electrons surrounded by a potential barrier of 0.07 eV and it is explained by an equation based on a simplified hopping model.

Kramers-Kronig analysis was made on the reflectivity spectra of NaCl single crystals in the region 6eV to 12eV for temperature range from 10°K to 573°K. The spectra of absorption constant and energy loss are reported for the temperature range from 10°K to 573°K and compared with those obtained on thin film specimens. The spectra of complex dielectric constant, complex refractive index and conductivity are presented at temperatures of 10°K, 78°K and 298°K. The analysis of σ-spectrum in the region of chlorine doublet and the plateau near the step leads to the conclusion that the spectrum in this region consists of absorptions due to hydrogen like series of exciton. Each of the chlorine doublet standing for
n=1 state exciton lines can be fitted with a suitable asymmetric Lorentzian function having a positive degree of asymmetry. The oscillator strengths of (3/2, 1/2)- and (1/2, 1/2)- components are estimated at 0.212 and 0.252 at 10°K, respectively. The exchange interaction between electron and hole of an exciton and the threshold value of photoelectron emission from single crystals are discussed on the basis of the present experimental results. The peak at 11.5 eV is interpreted as being due to the exciton formation associated with the transition from highest valence bands to excited energy bands resulting from 3
d sodium states.

Emission and excitation spectra of cubic Zn(S : Se) : Mn phosphors containing various Mn contents were prepared. An emission band peculiar to Mn
2+ ion is observed also on the phosphors with large proportion of ZnSe. Wellknown excitation bands observed with ZnS : Mn phosphor are not disturbed at all up to about 60 mol % of ZnSe, although they are masked one after another with long tail of fundamental absorption as the proportion of ZnSe increases. For ZnSe : Mn a distinct excitation band which can be attributed to
6A1→
4T1(
G) transition is found near 530 mμ. These results are consistent with the previous conclusion obtained for the case of ZnS.

The photo-magnetoresistance of pure SrTiO
3 single crystals was measured by dc method mainly at 10°K. The magnitude of the photo-magnetoresistance is greater by a factor of 5 than that of the magnetoresistance which was observed in the reduced or doped samples. The reduction of the magnetoresistance in the latter samples is due to degeneracy of carriers. From the photo-magnetoresistance for various directions of current and magnetic field the conduction band of SrTiO
3 is deduced to have six equivalent energy minima along the 〈100〉 directions in the Brillouin zone. The Photo-magnetoresistance effect at low temperatures can not strictly be described in terms of three coefficients by Pearson and Suhl’s equation for cubic crystals. The results of the piezoresistance measurements, which was considered to be an evidence for a conduction band with the lowest-energy minimum at
k=0, can be explained on the conduction band with the lowest-energy minima along the 〈100〉 directions.

The band structures of GaS and GaSe near the Fermi levels are derived in a semiempirical way. In view of the anisotropic structures, the π band structures are mainly studied. The valence band consists of a π band with the heavy effective masses. The conduction band at the center of the Brillouin zone has the light effective masses for the both directions parallel and perpendicular to the layers, while its minimum at the zone edge has a two-dimensional character. The characteristics of the optical properties of these compounds are the existence of the sharp peaks associated with the nearly two-dimensional pair bands at the saddle points and further the limited spatial extension of an exciton along the
c-axis. Most of the structures in reflectivities in GaS and GaSe and the binding energy of an exciton in GaSe are explained fairly well.

The interaction between the surface optical mode of the lattice vibration (the surface optical phonon) and the electron beam in a slab of an NaCl-type ionic crystal is considered. An expression for the energy loss of the electron beam due to the interaction with the surface optical phonon is obtained and evaluated in detail in certain limiting cases. The results of the numerical calculations are compared with the experimental data of Boersh
et al., and it is confirmed that their observed peaks are due to the excitation of the surface optical phonon.

Using a germanium single crystal and Cu Kα radiation, an intensity of the x-ray thermal scattering accompanying the Bragg case reflection was observed, and found to depend very much on the direction of an observation.
This result could be theoretically interpreted as an interference phenomenon between thermal scattering caused by a diffracted beam and that by a transmitted beam in a crystal.

Intensity measurements of X-ray diffuse scattering by single crystals of KBr were made on and around the symmetry axes [010] passing through the reciprocal lattice point 400 and [110] passing through the point 004 in the reciprocal space at 293°K.
The measured intensities were compared with the calculated intensities in which the first-order thermal diffuse scatterings by the transverse lattice waves were computed on the bases of a simple-shell model and a rigid-ion model.
The measurements were found to be closer to the calculated values based on the shell model than to those based on the rigid-ion model.
The intensity correction of diffuse scattering till up to 20% for the divergence of X-rays was found to be necessary for the calculation corresponding to the measurements on the symmetry axis [010] passing through the reciprocal lattice point 400.

Substituent effects on coupling constants
JC–H between directly bonded C
13 and H
1 nuclei in saturated hydrocarbon molecules are studied theoretically. The calculation shows that resonance interactions among chemical bonds equivalent to the relevant C
13–H
1 bond reduce
JC–H. Then, if some of the chemical bonds become inequivalent to the C
13–H
1 bond by substitutions,
JC–H of the C
13–H
1 bond increases. The calculation is supported by observed variations of
JC–H in substituted methanes.

Excitation transfer process between atoms is investigated theoretically in the framework of the two-state approximation. Two methods are proposed with regard to the treatment of the non-local potential which results from the projection-operator formalism. One is a local potential approximation and the other is an extension of the method of Chadan. A new expression for the cross section is found. This formula is more accurate than the usual distorted wave one. The matrix elements of a coupling potential with respect to the wave functions of the relative motion are estimated by making use of the JWKB approximation. The new cross section formula obtained will be useful for a wide class of collision processes in which initial and final states are mutually orthogonal.

The profiles of ionic helium line, 3203 Å, from a low-density and high-electron-temperature plasma which is formed in a low pressure arc discharge chamber immersed in a magnetic field are investigated. The electron density of the plasma is about 8×10
13/cm
3 and the electron temperature is about 2×10
5°K. The red wing of the profile is found to be formed by the Stark broadening of ions and electrons. The electron densities are determined by the intensity of the red wing by using the theory of the Stark broadening of Griem and compared with the results of microwave interferometer and Langmuir probe measurements.

A homogeneous multi-dimensional random field is represented as the moving average by means of the multi-dimensional Wiener integral, from which the Fourier spectral representation of the random field is derived. The spectral representation of a homogeneous and isotropic vector random field in 3-dimensional space is achieved using the result of the previous work on the generalized spherical Bessel function and vector harmonics. The correlation tensor and the spectral density tensor are expressed as the vector Hankel transforms of each other. The spectral representation of the random field is obtained in terms of the solid vector harmonics and the random spectral measures labelled by three quantum numbers. One of quantum numbers indicates a longitudinal and two transverse parts as well as their mutual independence. The expression is simplified considerably by introduction of a single random phase. Lastly, various vector random fields, including the potential, the solenoidal and the curl fields, are discussed using the spectral representation.

Possible effects of self-trapping and redshift of incoherent light in a plasma under astronomical conditions are investigated. Nonlinear polarization of a plasma is produced either by an intensity-dependent electron density or by a nonlinearity in the electron displacement. Possibilities of self-trapping by nonlinear electronic polarization and by thermal effect in a plasma are studied. Then the redshift due to nonlinear electronic polarization and that due to forward Rayleigh scattering by thermal fluctuations are considered. Finally a sizable redshift and self-trapping of light are shown to possibly occur in a stellar plasma of high density in a large scale when the light source is bright and it is rich in ultraviolet radiation. The above mechanism suggests a novel interpretation of quasi-stellar objects. The model requires neither the cosmological distance nor relativistic velocity of recession nor large gravitational potential.
