Gamma gamma angular correlations for the five cascades 121–280 keV, 136–265 keV, 66–199 keV, 136–199 keV and 136–66 keV following the decay of
75Se have been studied using the coincidence method. The 66–199 keV and 136–199 keV gamma gamma angular correlations are found to be consistent with the spin 1/2 for the 199 keV level in
75As.

Energy and angular correlations between two alpha particles from the Be
9(α, 2α)He
5 and C
12(α, 2α)Be
8 reactions were investigated. The incident alpha particle energies were 32.3 MeV and 37.4 MeV for Be
9 and 37.4 MeV for C
12. It is concluded that the quasi-free scattering of incident alpha particles from alpha clusters in Be
9 is the main process of the (α, 2α) reaction on Be
9. It remains some ambiguity for the mechanism of the (α, 2α) reaction on C
12 to be explained as a simple quasi-free scattering process.

Elastic scattering measurements have been carried out on
16O+
10B and
16O+
11B systems using beams of
16O ions of precisely defined energy from the Kyoto University tandem accelerator. Measurements have been made for energies near and above the Coulomb barrier appropriate to each system. The scattering particles were identified by means of the two-detectors fast-slow type coincidence system. The angular distributions for
16O+
10B scattering show a smooth angular dependence, but in the case of those for
16O+
11B scattering, diffraction structure was observed. The excitation curves of both systems have a smooth, nearly monotonic, energy dependence. A complex optical potential model has been used to describe the elastic scattering data. Using a Woods-Saxon form for both the real and imaginary potentials, fairly good agreement with the experimental data was obtained. The imaginary part of potentials increases with energy (about a MeV per MeV) in the energy range studied. There is one difference of the imaginary potential of 2 MeV as a whole in two scattering systems.

Excitation curves were measured for the
23Na(p, α
0)
20Ne reaction in the proton energy range of 2.2–4.5 MeV at θ
lab=135° and also 2.8–4.5 MeV at θ
lab=90°. The yield of gamma rays accompanying the
23Na(p, α
1)
20Ne and
23Na(p, p
1)
23Na reactions was measured in the energy ranges of 2.48–2.80 MeV and of 3.56–4.50 MeV. Thirteen angular distributions for the α
0 group were obtained in the range of 2.27–3.63 MeV. Most of these distributions are asymmetric about 90° (c.m.). The angular distributions in the range of 2.27–4.45 MeV were analysed in terms of the Legendre polynomial. Four resonances were found at 2.29, 2.31, 2.42 and 2.44 MeV, and the last two resonances were analysed to be 4
+ and 1
− respectively. The excitation curves in the range of 2.76–4.50 MeV were analysed by the fluctuation theory, and the coherence width for the compound nucleus was found to be about 50 keV.

The differential cross sections of the γ+
d→π
0+
d reaction have been measured at the pion angle of 50° in the center of mass system and in the photon energy range from 650 MeV to 820 MeV, for the purpose of estimating the isotopic vector part of the photopion production amplitude from nucleons around the second resonance,
N1⁄2*(1525).
Recoiled deuterons were measured with the combination of the momentum analysis with a magnet and the time of flight measurement. The measured cross section together with data obtained by us in the previous experiment were analysed basing on the impulse approximation. The
s11-,
s31-,
p33-,
p11- and
d13-waves are included in the analysis. The results of analysis are consistent with the conclusion that the isotopic vector part is dominant in the
d13-wave amplitude of π
0 photoproduction from free nucleons around the
N1⁄2*(1525) resonance.

The theory of Liu and Toxen for the ultrasonic attenuation is extended to the case where crossed magnetic and electric fields exist. A study is made of the effect of the finite life time of conduction electrons on the ultrasonic amplification in semimetals, in particular on the de Haas type oscillations (i) and the giant quantum oscillations (ii). In the region (i) the effect of the finite life time appears strongly as ultrasonic waves propagate nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field. In the region (ii) the shape and the width of the amplification peaks are not very sensitive to the details of impurity scattering and the width is not modified heavily by the electric field. The theory of Gurevich
et al. for the giant quantum oscillations of the ultrasonic attenuation is turned out to be valid if their level width is doubled.

By means of the retarded Green’s function (response function) we derive the threshold condition, the oscillation frequency and the time-limited band width of lasers. The statistical property of the set of identical two-level atoms are taken into account on the basis of the Dicke-Haken’s model. This property gives rise to atom-field correlation terms in the polarization operator. It is found that this terms influence the imaginary part of the oscillation frequency and the effect becomes large as the photon density increases or the occupancy difference tends to zero. In this respect the relation with the super-radiation is discussed. The customary approximation of considering only the interaction which is conservative for the particle number is tested. Under the resonance condition this approximation is correct up to the order of |ω
k−ω
0|⁄ω

Indium alloyed with 4.5 to 12.2 atomic percent cadmium can exist in cubic phase at and above 100°C. The Knight shift of the
115In resonance in cubic phase at each of the concentrations 5, 8 and 11 atomic percent of cadmium has been determined and extrapolated to zero concentration of cadmium. The value has been found to be +0.83±0.02%. The results have been discussed n the light of the free electron Fermi surface in indium metal.

The linewidth of resonance absorption of microwave power in a hexagonal ferrite, Zn
2Y, induced by surface imperfections is discussed on the basis of two-magnon relaxation mechanism. Two maxima of the linewidth observed when direction angle θ
H of the applied dc field with respect to the crystallographic c axis is changed are analyzed by a theoretical calculation. It is predicted from the theory that the angular position θ
HE corresponding to the maximum at small angle is independent of the size of surface imperfections and θ
HB to the other maximum is dependent on the size of surface imperfections. These results well coincide with the experimental results. Some information about an effective exchange constant and a parameter in scattering Hamiltonian are also obtained.

The anomalous volume magnetostriction characteristic of Invar alloys was investigated as a link in the Invar-problem. The variation of volume magnetostriction with temperature was measured on the specimens subjected not only to annealing but also to cold-work; especially the behaviours just below and beyond the ferromagnetic Curie temperature were observed. The measurements of Mössbauer effect for the alloys were also carried out as a function of temperature, and the influence of external magnetic field on the Mössbauer spectra was examined. It was confirmed that an Invar-type alloy contains a considerable amount of the magnetization caused by the application of the field or an assembly of states of predominance of the para-process, the origin of which may be ascribed to the internal disturbances caused around the α-phase embryos embeded in the γ-matrix, due to the transitionary process towards an equilibrium of the two-phase transformation.

Magnetic susceptibility and antiferromagnetic resonance experiments were carried out on single crystals of CoBr
2·6H
2O. These experiments showed that the antiferromagnetic properties of this satl are quite similar to those of the corresponding chloride. The bromide also shows large magnetic anisotropy; thus, in interpreting the results of these experiments, it was found necessary to use the theory developed by M. Date explicitly for such a case.
From the experimental data, the anisotropy between the easy or preferred crystalline
c axis and the intermediate
b axis is 1.3×10
5 erg/cm
3; and the anisotropy between the
c axis and the least preferred
a* axis, 20.4×10
5 erg/cm
3. A study of the effects of the orthorhombic crystal field on the cobaltous ion, together with a calculation of the dipolar contribution to the magnetic anisotropy, leads to an overestimate of this anisotropy by about fifty percent. Some consideration is given to the sources of this discrepancy.

A curious antiferromagnetic resonance in CoCl
26H
2O was investigated in detail at the microwave region. This resonance was first observed by one of the present authors several years ago and reported without any reasonable explanation. In the present study, it becomes clear that the resonance can be observed only near the critical hyperbola with a half frequency of the critical field resonance. Considering the various experimental results including both the antiferromagnetic resonance and magnetostriction measurements, we concluded that the newly obtained resonance mode corresponds to the second harmonic oscillation of the critical field resonance connected with the magnetostrictive and anisotropic exchange couplings. It is shown that a sudden change in lattice constants observed near the critical field makes it possible to produce the second order higher harmonic oscillation of the spin system in antiferromagnetic CoCl
26H
2O.

The temperature dependence of electrical resistivity of dislocation in pure aluminum has been studied experimentally.
In the case of pure aluminum, the ratio of the dislocation resistivity at room temperature to that at liquid nitrogen temperature increases from 1.0 to 1.2 with decreasing dislocation density. A discussion is given on this change in the resistivity ratio. It is concluded that the dislocation resistivity due mainly to the core of a dislocation and to the strain field rather than a stacking fault ribbon, and the strain field which contributes to the temperature dependent part of the dislocation resistivity is estimated to be about 200 Å in radius.

A transverse voltage along the binary axis is observed in bismuth in a longitudinal magnetic field along the bisectrix direction. This voltage is found to be directly related to the tilt of electron energy ellipsoid around the binary axis. The observed transverse voltage is proportional to the longitudinal electric and magnetic fields in the classical high magnetic field region and gives a value of 8°31′ for the tilt angle. This transverse voltage is relatively unaffected by the presence of impurities and can be a useful tool to estimate the tilt angle of energy ellipsoids with respect to the crystal axes in semimetals. Prediction of the sign of this transverse voltage requires an exact knowledge of the relative crystalline and field directions. The anomalous longitudinal magnetoresistance is also discussed.

The relation between excitons and “plasmons” in insulators is studied, and it is shown that both excitons and “plasmons” may be obtained in the singlet longitudinal states.
When the energy of interband transition is nearly equal to the free electron plasmon energy hω
p, the energy and the angular dispersion of “plasmon” loss peaks are closely related to the structure of the pair band. In this case the “plasmon” solution of the dispersion relation is expected on the higher energy side of
M3-(or
M2-) van Hove singularity provided the mean value of imaginary part of the dielectric constant exceeds some critical value below this energy and is small above this energy.
Recent experimental data of energy loss spectra on alkali-halides are analyzed making use of the optical data and the results of band structure calculations.

A decrease of the electrical resistivity of TGS single crystals observed at an increase of relative air humidity is explained by the electric conduction of water adsorbed on the fracture surface of the TGS. A thermodynamic analysis of the results indicates that physical adsorption of water vapour upon the TGS surface takes place throughout the experimentally investigated range of relative air humidity.

The trapping of free electrons and holes in anthracene single crystals doped with tetracene has been measured by the pulsed photoconduction method. Tetracene behaves as a shallow hole trap located 0.40 eV ±0.02 eV above the hole band. At the same time it also acts both as a shallow and a deep electron traps. The shallow electron trap is located at 0.17±0.02 eV below the electron band. Both for electrons and holes the capture cross-section of shallow traps is proportional to the tetracene content.
The quantum efficiency for photo-carrier generation in anthracene does not change by the existence of tetracene which is a remarkable quencher for photo-fluorescence. From this result it is deduced that the photo-carriers are generated by multi-exciton processes, and that the generation of carriers at the surface interacting with diffusing-out singlet excitons makes negligible contribution for photoconduction.

Bulky as well as needle-like single crystals of 9, 10-anthraquinone were grown by the Bridgman and the vapor phase growth technique respectively. The bulky single crystal is transparent and yellow and can be cleaved easily along (ab)-, (bc)- and (ac)-planes of the crystal. Crystals with dimension about 1×1×1 cm can be prepared easily.
The DC-photoconductivity is about two orders of magnitude smaller than that of anthracene. It is recognized that carriers are generated with radiation at 4100 A which induces the
n−π
* transition of the molecule. Also carriers are generated for radiations which induce π−π
* excitations in the wavelength region of 2500 A to 3000 A. In π−π
* excitation region, the photocurrent with the illuminated electrode negative is much larger than that with the illuminated electrode positive. The photoconduction changes with thermal activation energy of 0.17 eV.

A series of mixed metal oxides with perovskite-type structure, A
2(FeMo)O
6−λ (where A=Ba, Sr and Ca), were synthesized. The ferrimagnetic Néel temperatures of Ba
2(FeMo)O
6, Sr
2(FeMo)O
6 and Ca
2(FeMo)O
6, were respectively found to be 351°K, 450°K and 398°K, with the saturation moments of 3.6∼3.2 μ
B. The Mössbauer absorption spectra of Fe
57 in Sr
2(FeMo)O
6 and Ca
2(FeMo)O
6 were measured at room temperature. They have the isomer shift of 0.27 mm/sec and 0.35 mm/sec relative to that of Pd(Co
57) and the values of internal magnetic field at 0°K were deduced to be −570 kOe and −490 kOe, respectively. From the measurements of electrical conductivity and infra-red transmission spectra, all of these compounds A
2(FeMo)O
6 were found to be highly conductive (ρ\simeq10
−1∼10
−3ohm·cm) and their temperature dependence is characteristic of metallic conduction.

Luminescence of NaCl:Ag is studied under excitation with radiation in the extreme ultraviolet region from 12 eV to 25 eV. Excitation-, slow component- and electrophotoluminescence-spectra are obtained. All of these spectra show drastic changes at about 17 eV. The origin of these changes is thought of the excitation of the valence electrons by high energy photoelectrons through Auger process.

Silver-doped KBr crystals are observed to have two pronounced absorption peaks at 6.24 and 6.53 eV, named
G1 and
G2 respectively. The oscillator strengths of these bands are nearly constant over a range of room temperature to liquid helium temperature. Silver-doped KI crystals have corresponding peaks at 5.06 and 5.50 eV. It is concluded that these bands are associated with the formation of a trapped exciton around a silver ion substituted at a cation site. The splitting into two peaks is interpreted as arising from spin-orbit interaction.

By taking into account a band parameter γ
3 which characterizes the trigonal warping of the bands, the electric resistivity and Hall coefficient in graphite are calculated. Electron-phonon coupling constants determined so as to fit the observed resistivity well are
D1=27.9 eV and
D2\doteqdot0, where
D1 and
D2 indicate the coupling constants related to the in-plane lattice vibration and out-of-plane mode, respectively. At room temperature effect of γ
3 on the calculated Hall coefficient is very small, while at low temperatures (25–50°K) it affects considerably. Calculated values at low temperatures are improved to a certain extent in consideration of γ
3, but they have opposite sign to the observed coefficients. This discrepancy is removed by introduction of carrier-carrier scattering effect.

Photoconductivity of CdS single crystals was measured at room temperature under argon ion laser excitation. For strong uniform excitation, photoelectron concentration reached a value independent of the excitation intensity and a fast-decay photoconductivity appeared. For strong surface excitation, a logarithmic variation of photoconductivity with excitation intensity was observed. These results are analysed on a two-recombination-center model; under strong excitation usual recombination center is completely occupied by hole and another center plays dominant role in recombination. Comparison between photoconductivities under uniform and surface excitations determines hole lifetime, ambipolar diffusion length and surface recombination velocity. Measurements of PEM effect and optical absorption induced by the excitation are consistent with the photoconductivity analysis. Characetristics of the recombination centers are quantitatively determined.

The theory of the diffraction of low-energy electrons is formulated along the pseudopotential formalism well known in the theory of metals. A Schroedinger-like equation with the pseudopotential is rewritten as an integral equation which in turn is solved by the
t-matrix method of Bennemann. The effects of inelastic processes are expressed in terms of a complex (optical) potential. Inner-potential correction is shown to be dependent on the incident electron energy without regard to the inelastic processes. As an example, the intensity of the 00 wave from the (0001) face of graphite is calculated approximating the potential of each atom by a screened Coulomb potential and the core wave function by a Slater atomic orbital. The orthogonalization of the wave function for the incident electrons to the core wave functions improves the agreement of the calculated result with the observed one by Lander and Morrison.

The crystal structure of interstitial solid solution of zirconium-oxygen system was investigated by means of
X-ray, electron and neutron diffraction on specimens in the composition range between 11 and 27 at% 0. The specimens were prepared by melting appropriate mixtures of zirconium metal and zirconium dioxide in an arc-furnace. In addition to a superstructure found by Holmberg and Dagerhamn in the composition ZrO
y (0.33<
y<0.40), a new superstructure having a different ordered arrangement of oxygen was found in the range of ZrO
x (0.25<
x<0.33). The atomic arrangement of oxygen in these superstructures can be expressed in terms of the stacking sequence of octahedral interstitial sites in the lattice of α-Zr,
i.e., ABCABC ··· and ABAB ··· stackings in ZrO
x and ZrO
y respectively. However, the limiting composition ZrO
0.333 has an intermediate structure in which the arrangement of oxygen atoms is basically described as ABCBCACAB ··· stacking with nine layers period. The actual distribution of oxygen in specimens is not ideally regular as mentioned above, but contains rather high degree of stacking disorder.

The relation between the retarded Green’s function and second-order correlation tensor of electromagnetic potential for a pure electromagnetic radiation in thermal equilibrium is derived. This relation holds also for a long wavelength electromagnetic radiation in media, so long as the radiation is in thermal equilibrium. The electromagnetic second-order correlation tensors for blackbody radiation is obtained, using the relation mentioned above. Upon following Abrikosov, Gorkov and Dzyaloshinski the retarded Green’s function for a electromagnetic radiation interacting with matter is expressed in terms of the complex dielectric constant which is necessarily introduced for carrying out a macroscopic formulation. With the assumption of spatial homogeneity of media the electromagnetic second-order correlation tensors for an optical field are obtained. These correlation tensors are also expressed in tems of the complex dielectric constant. This retarded Green’s function is simply related to the temperature Green’s function, so that the diagram analysis will possibly be applied in the theory of optical coherence for an interacting radiation with matter.

Using the MO’s for π-electrons in an isolated peptide group which are determined such that the ASMO-SCF-CI calculation reproduces the observed wavelength of the optical absorption maximum, the energy bands for both the
H-bonded and the main polypeptide-chain in the case of the β-structures and of the α-helix are calculated in terms of the LCMO and the nearest-neighbor approximation. It is shown that the shifts of bands for main peptide chains are of the considerable order of −0.2∼−0.8 eV, and that in each case the band widths for main peptide chain are generally far larger than those for
H-bonded polypeptide, especially those of the highest valence and the conduction band for main chain in α-helix have remarkably large values of the order of 1∼2 eV. The π-electronic structure of
H-bonded di- and tri-peptide are also studied by means of the ASMO-SCF method, in comparison with those obtained by Suard
et al..

Energy levels and eigenfunctions of various

Z are discussed from the experimental value of
D for ferric myoglobin. Biquardratic terms of spin Hamiltonian are also derived. For Fe
2+, temperature dependences of the effective magnetic moment are discussed in detail for various cases of ligand field strength. In ferrous hemoglobin, the lowest quintet state seems to be separated from other quintet states by energies much larger than the spin-orbit interaction and the ligand field seems to be considerably different from that in the ferric form.

According to precrystallisation theory, supercooled liquid is assumed to have a “solid phase” in form of freezing nuclei suspended in the liquid phase. On this basis the physical properties of supercooled liquids have been found dependent on the specific surface-free energy of the liquid-solid interface, σ. Calculations have been made for the some of these properties (refractive index, density and viscosity) in the ease of water using different available sets of σ. Calculated values of these properties do not agree fully with the available experimental values by using one particular set of σ. To satisfy these properties at different temperatures, a new set of σ has been derived.

The tetrahedron model in the previous paper for the electron binding in water is re-examined. The energy levels, the oscillator strength and the ESR hyperfine splitting constant of the hydrated electron have been calculated for four types of water molecules and for the various sizes of the tetrahedron. It is concluded that a stretched form of water molecules most satisfactorily explains the experimental data. As the size of the tetrahedron increases, the excitation energy decreases for each form.

The coupling of two waves due to the presence of a third wave with large amplitude is studied. On the basis of simple model equations, the conditions for excitation of the first two waves are discussed for the following three cases: i) ω

Both the experimental and the theoretical studies on the controlled excitation of the helical wave are made in weakly ionized mercury, helium and neon discharge cylindrical plasmas with a longitudinal magnetic field below the critical field value. The phase constant of the excited wave has almost linear relation with exciting frequency and becomes larger as the applied uniform magnetic field increases. The attenuation constant has a peak value near the critical frequency and the attenuation of the wave becomes smaller with increasing magnetic field. These relations are analysed theoretically as a kind of an electron drift resistive wave. The comparison of the experimental results with the calculated ones is in good agreement.

A weak electron beam is injected into a diffused hydrogen plasma perpendicular to the external magnetic field and signals of non-thermal level are observed on the frequency spectra near integral multiples of ion cyclotron frequencies. It is concluded from parameter dependences of these signals that the ion cyclotron harmonic waves, which suffer no Landau damping for perpendicular propagation, are excited as a result of coupling with the electrostatic beam wave. The observed frequency spectra are interpreted to be such grown-up harmonic waves.

Presented is a class of nonlinear partial differential equations which admit a reduction to tractable nonlinear equations such as the Burgers and the Kortweg-deVries equation. The method of reduction is based on a singular perturbation expansion. Applications to the hydrodynamics and the plasma physics are discussed.
