Decay of
80mBr was investigated. The half-lives of the isomeric and the ground states of
80Br were obtained to be 4.42±0.01 h. and 16.8±0.1 min, respectively. Beta-ray, gamm-ray and gamma-gamma coincidence studies were carried out and energies and relative intensities of beta and gamma transitions were determined. Kurie plot analyses of negatrons and positrons give the maximum energies of 2.000±0.016 MeV and 0.850±0.007 MeV, respectively. The 1.478 MeV 0
+ level of
80Se and the 1.320 MeV 0
+ and 1.256 MeV 2
+ levels of
80Kr were confirmed.

The reaction Be
9(
p,
pα)He
5g’nd was studied by coincidence measurements of emitted protons and alpha-particles. The angular correlation distributions were obtained in three manners. All of the distributions have a maximum at a pair of angles which corresponds kinematically to the zero momentum of the recoil nucleus. The yields at the recoilless angles are almost proportional to the differential cross section of the free proton-helium elastic scattering at the corresponding angle. The absolute cross section and the width of the peak appeared in the angular correlation distribution are in fairly good agreement with the results given previously by the experiment on the reaction Be
9(α, 2α)He
5g’nd at 28 MeV.

Transverse and longitudinal forced magnetostrictions of Fe–Ni Invar alloys were measured by means of the paper strain gauge technique at room temperature, 77° and 4.2°K. From the measured values of the forced magneto-strictions, the pressure coefficients of the absolute saturation magnetization were estimated. The absolute values of the pressure coefficients of the absolute saturation magnetization were found to decrease monotonically with an increase of Ni concentration. On the basis of Sidorov’s theory the pressure effect on the absolute saturation magnetization is discussed.

Magnetic susceptibility measurement has been made on the σ-phase of Fe–V, Co–V, Ni–V and Co–Cr binary alloys. The Fe–V system only is ferromagnetic. The temperature dependent parts of the susceptibility of Fe–V alloys obey the Curie-Weiss law. The paramagnetic moment μ per iron atom in Fe–V varies with vanadium concentration
Cv following an empirical relationship, μ⁄μ
B=−2.62+173⁄
Cv, where
Cv is atomic-% of vanadium. The Curie temperature is sensitive to heat treatments of the specimens, but the magnetic moment is not affected. The susceptibility of the other alloys is found to be nearly temperature independent. The magnitude of the magnetic moment localized on magnetic atoms at different kinds of sites in these σ-phase is suggested.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) of Mn
55 associated with the Mn
3+ ion at the octahedral site in its magnetically ordered state has been studied on manganese ferrite of cubic phase. Using a single crystal sample, the large anisotropic hyperfine field of +115 kOe, in addition to the isotropic hyperfine field of −360 kOe, has been observed, which is characteristic of the Mn
3+ ion at the octahedral site with the Jahn-Teller distortion. These two values of the hyperfine fields are consistent both with the theoretically calculated values and with the data of the hyperfine coupling constants of the paramagnetic Mn
3+ ion. It was found that the ground state of the Mn
3+ ion at the octahedral site was of
B1g type and that the directions of tetragonal axes (Jahn-Teller axes) were three equivalent 〈100〉 axes. In connection with the unsuccessful observation of the quadrupole-splitted lines, which are also characteristic of NMR in the MN
3+ ion, the effects and the origins of the lower symmetry crystalline fields are discussed.

The spontaneous volume magnetostriction of metallic ferromagnets is discussed based on the band theory. Dependences on lattice parameter of the band width and of the molecular field coefficient are taken into account. The difference between the lattice parameters in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states at 0°K is expressed in terms of the difference between the energies in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states. It is understood qualitatively why the absolute value of negative spontaneous volume magnetostriction (
e.g. in Ni) is generally small while that of positive one (
e.g. in Invar) is sometimes large. By assuming a simple but reasonable density of states curve for fcc Fe–Ni alloys the spontaneous volume magnetostriction of the alloys is calculated. The calculated value for Invar alloy is seven times larger than that for Ni metal in absolute value; the agreement with experimental results is satisfying.

X-ray diffraction experiments at room temperature and magnetization measurements from 4.2 to about 1000°K have been performed on the whole composition range of Fe–Ru alloys. The magnetic susceptibility, χ, in the ε phase of 100 at% Ru to 13 at% Ru–Fe alloy shows a Pauli-paramagnetic temperature dependence at high temperatures with small negative and positive temperature coefficients for the alloys less than and more than 30 at% Ru, respectively. The value of χ at room temperature increases with increasing Fe concentration from 100 at% Ru; the extrapolated value of χ, that is χ of the ε Fe, is as large as 10
−3/Oe/mole. The Fe-rich alloys in the ε phase shows some decrease in χ at low temperatures, suggesting the occurrence of metallic antiferromagnetic ordering.
The reason for the variation in χ with Fe concentration may be attributed to the change in the density of states at the Fermi level due to the change of the width of the
d-band, relative position of the Fermi level being unchanged because of the fixed number of outer electrons.

The recovery of the electrical resistivity of 99.999% purity Cu and Au and Au-0.1% Cu alloy was studied after fast neutron irradiation at liquid He temperature. The damage production rate decreased by cold work and alloying in Au, but it increased by cold work in Cu. Cold work enhanced the recovery above 150°K in Cu and above 50°K in Au. In Au, the stage III recovery shifted by about 30°K toward lower temperature for cold worked specimens.

The isochronal annealing studies of electrical resistivity of Fe after fast neutron irradiation at liquid helium temperature were performed. Recovery spectra of annealed, cold worked and as-received specimens were compared. The main peak in stage I was divided into two substages and stages II and III recovery seemed to be influenced by interstitial impurities.

The electrical conductivity of naphthazarin metal complexes was measured in temperature range from 20°C to 70°C. The apparent energy gap (
ΔE) of naphthazarin and naphthazarin-Cu was 1.0 eV and
ΔE of naphthazarin-Fe was 1.8 eV. The naphthazarin-Fe
x–Cu
1−x complex took the lowest value of
ΔE (about 0.7 eV) at the composition where
x∼0.6. It seems that to take the lowest value of
ΔE at the certain composition is due to a charge transfer between Fe and Cu.

A simple model for studying the stability of
Vk-centres in alkali halides is proposed. The lattice energy is replaced by a Hooke’s law type expression with three force constants (central forces only) between the nearest alkali-alkali, alkali-halogen and halogen-halogen ions. The electron-lattice coupling is taken into account by two components which are the first derivatives, with respect to the distance between the ions, of self-energy and transfer energy (between the nearest neighbour halogen orbitals) of the hole. Conditions for the
Vk-centre to be more stable than one center trapped state are obtained for different cases. On the other hand the
Vk-centre molecular vibration frequency and the optical absorption energies are evaluated from the known values of such quantities as macroscopic elastic constants and valence band widths. They are in order of magnitude agreement with experimental data. A few experiments are suggested to check some of the results obtained regarding the variation of
Vk-centre vibration frequency and the
UV absorption energy for a given species of halogen
X2−.

At low temperatures, as-grown zinc selenide crystals containing Cu as major impurity show three luminescent bands,
i.e. green (5300 Å), yellow (5700 Å), and red (6400 Å). Experimental studies were made of excitation spectra of these luminescences and photoconductivity at and above 77°K. Decay kinetics of these emissions and effects of infrared-irradiation are also presented at 77°K. The yellow emission can be attributed to the donor-acceptor pair recombination from spectral shift to longer wavelengths with time during decay. The red emission has the same excitation spectra as the photoconductivity and is quenched by infrared light simultaneously with photoconductivity under steady excitation. During decay this emission does not exhibit spectral shift and is stimulated by infrared light. These facts indicate the free electron to bound hole transition as the recombination mechanism. Conclusive argument cannot be given for the green emission which shows no spectral change during nonexponential decay.

According to experimental work by Miyazawa, Suzuki and Maeda, directional differences of weak-field galvanomagnetic coefficients in
p-Si change with temperature and eventually reverse sign unlike in
p-Ge. To clarify the correlation between these results and the warped valence bands, a calculation method for galvanomagnetic coefficients is developed, which includes a description of constant-energy surfaces in terms of cubic harmonics.
Numerical evaluations are made using “band-anisotropy” parameters determined from the
k-
p perturbation equation with inverse-mass parameters and spin-orbit splitting thus far obtained. The results well reproduce many experimental features, especially the sign-reversal temperature
Tc∼130°K in purest samples. Decrease in
Tc with increasing impurities is explained from the mixing of ionized impurity scattering. Unusual decreases in the Hall factor
R0⁄
R∞ with increasing temperature between 100 and 300°K in
p-Si are also derived from the energy-dependent warping in the valence bands.

ts increase with hydrostatic pressure and decrease with two-dimensional pressure perpendicular to
c-axis. The exponential laws:

t∞eα⁄E hold under every fixed pressure. The activation field α decreases linearly at the rate: (∂α⁄∂
p)⁄α=−5.0×10
−11 cgs with hydrostatic pressure, and increases linearly at the rate: (∂α⁄∂
p)⁄α=4.3×0
−11 cgs with two-dimensional pressure. These results agree qualitatively and quantitatively in the order of magnitude with the prediction of the Miller-Weinreich model. The pressure dependences of the 180° wall energy and the spontaneous polarization, which quantities have close relations with α, have been calculated by the molecular theory of Kinase and Takahasi, and fair agreement has been found between the theory and the experiment.

Two types of current saturation were observed in photoconducting CdS. One mainly appears in the low conductivity range and the other in the high conductivity range. The former is characterized by τ>
Tt(τ: onset time,
Tt: sound transit time) and a bell-shaped curve of 1/τ vs γ (γ: reduced applied field), while the latter by τ<
Tt and a straight line of 1/τ vs γ. In the intermediate conductivity range, they are superimposed on each other. These non-ohmic behaviors can be interpreted in terms of conductivity-dependence of the dominant mechanism of acoustic flux build-up. Namely, the current saturation in the low conductivity range is caused by the “round-trip” gain mechanism through classical sound amplification, while that in the high conductivity range is attributed to the one-way transit gain through stimulated phonon emission.

The Hall coefficient and resistivity of Al-doped and undoped Cd
1−xMg
xTe mixed crystals (0≤
x≤0.35) prepared by the Bridgeman-Stockbarger technique have been measured between 60° and 300°K. The experimental results were analysed in connection with the carrier concentration,
x-dependence of the donor ionization energy, and electron mobility. The optical mode scattering mobility was calculated by assuming the dielectric constants, the energy of the optical phonons, and effective mass value extrapolated from the data of II–VI semiconductors. The ionization energy of the shallow donors can well be described by the hydrogenic model. It was made clear that the polar optical vibration and ionized impurity scattering contribute to the electron mobility, while the neutral impurity, dipole, and alloy scattering are negligible.

In the presence of free carriers, longitudinal optical phonons in a polar semiconductor are coupled by electrostatic interaction to plasmon. These coupled modes of the plasmon and optical phonon system constitute longitudinal collective excitation in the semiconductor. Far-infrared reflectivity spectra of NaNO
2 crystals were measured from 63 to 400 cm
−1 over the temperature range from 85°K to 460°K. The results were analysed using a K.K. dispersion relation and the classical oscillator model. Five modes have been observed; the shifts in frequency are linear with temperature, and all the modes become significantly broadened with increasing temperature. Nor emarkable anomaly has been detected in passing through the Curie point.

Additively or electrolytically colored Cd doped alkali halides give rise to a new band in the UV region besides the F band. The peak position and half width of this band in five alkali halides are reported. Thermal annealing of these crystals from temperatures greater than 500°C leaves only an UV band which is attributed to colloidal cadmium particles, by a series of correlated optical, EPR and electrical conductivity studies.

The dispersion relations of helicons propagating in infinitely wide slab-shaped samples are discussed for the case that applied magnetic field is parallel or perpendicular to the surface. They are very similar to those in the cylindrical case that were discussed previously. The amplitude of modes excited by a surface current is numerically calculated as a function of the magnetic field and it shows a large oscillation due to the quantum effect. Frequency dependence of the amplitude of the oscillation is drawn for four types of modes.

Dislocation configurations in germanium single crystals developed during tensile deformation at 600°C were frozen in by the rapid cooling of deformed crystals under load and investigated with etch pit technique. Distribution patterns of dislocation etch pits at various deformation stages were observed on two kinds of surfaces which were cut out parallel to the cross slip plane (1\bar11) and to the primary slip plane (111). Peculiar distribution patterns of etch pits were developed during stage I, namely,
the stripe on the (1\bar11) surface and
the dense zone on the (111) surface. Stripe patterns of dislocation etch pits were also observed on the surfaces cut out parallel to the critical slip plane (\bar111) and to the conjugate slip plane (\bar1\bar11). It was found that the stripes on (1\bar11), (\bar111), and (\bar1\bar11) surfaces and the dense zone on (111) surface were interrelated each other. Characteristics of the distribution pattern of etch pits were compared with those observed on f.c.c. metals.

Fine manganese particles prepared by evaporation in argon, or in xenon, at low pressures were studied mainly by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The particles showed clear-cut crystal habits and they were classified into three types; firstly, particles of the shape of a tristetrahedron bounded by twelve {211}-planes, the crystal structure of which was α-manganese; secondly, particles of the shape of a rhombic dodecahedron bounded by twelve {110}-planes, the crystal structure of which was β-manganese, thirdly particles of the shape of a needle-like rod, the crystal structure of which is still unknown.

A dynamical theory of X-ray and electron diffraction for a distorted crystal which has been briefly explained elsewhere (Acta cryst.
15 (1962) 1311) is presented in more detail. The fundamental equations for both the X-ray and electron cases are deduced from the Maxwell or the Schrödinger equations, respectively, inside crystalline media which may contain distortions. A method of solution of the equations using the Riemann function is given together with the following general results; (1) the intensities and integrated intensities, with respect to the incident angle, of the transmitted and diffracted rays at a point on the exit surface are given by integrals over the entrance surface, (2) a theoretical basis for the column approximation in the electron case is provided, (3) the intensities of the X-ray projection topographs (traverse pattern) is not dependent upon the type of the incident waves but upon the total intensity to which the crystal is exposed. The limit of the applicability of the present theory to distorted crystals is given compared with the other theories.

By the close-coupling calculation the cross sections are evaluated for rotational transitions by low energy (0.01∼10 eV) electron impact in two polar molecules, CN and HCl. The transitions from the ground state of rotation are considered and the cross sections σ(
l=0→
l=0), σ(0→1), σ(0→2) are calculated,
l representing the rotational state of the molecule. For σ(0→1), comparison with the calculation in the Born approximation is made and it is shown that the Born results are fairly accurate even for a quite large dipole moment (at least up to 1
ea0,
a0 being the Bohr radius). There occurs a shape resonance in the elastic process 0→0, which may explain the peak appearing at about 10 eV of the incident energy in the measured total cross section for
e-HCl collision. Finally the dependence of the calculated cross sections on the dipole moment is discussed.

A new general theoretical treatment is given concerning the change in molecular size distribution due to crosslinking. Mass conservation and gelation are discussed by this fundamental treatment. The behaviors of the number and weight average molecular size of sol after gelation point are shown for many initial molecular size distributions. When a polymer has such a molecular size distribution as has two peaks, the weight average molecular size of sol may have a maximum and a minimum in the region after gelation point. Polymers which contain gel fraction initially are discussed by the same fundamental treatment as those which contain no gel fraction initially. The latter is the limiting case of the former. New quantities are derived which conserve in the region prior to gelation.

Calculations have been made of the molecular sound velocity R and molecular compressibility B in liquid methane in the temperature range 91°–191°K, and pressures up to 150 kg/cm

The flow considered is the steady rotation of a sphere in an electrically conducting viscous fluid which is at rest at infinity. The free magnetic field is produced by a magnetic dipole located at the center of the sphere and directed perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The velocity and induced fields are calculated for small values of the Reynolds, magnetic Reynolds and Hartmann numbers respectively. The couple on the sphere consists of two parts, the dynamic couple derived from the moments of the viscous forces which increases the couple and a magnetic couple arising from the magnetic stresses in the fluid which tends to decrease it. The total couple is the sum of the dynamic and magnetic couples and is decreased by a term of order
M2 due to the presence of the magnetic field.

The steady flow of a non-equilibrium ionized gas past an insulated wall with sharp corners, in the presence of an applied magnetic field has been dealt with by the linearized approximation. The supersonic aligned fields flow is studied in the two extreme cases of very low conductivity and infinite one. Since the perturbations identically vanish upstream of the first corner, the Laplace transformation can be applied to solve the problem. The distributions of pressure, density and electron number fraction over the wall are obtained. In the crossed fields case, only the supersonic flow of a very low conducting gas is studied by the same procedure. In the flow of infinite conductivity, the disturbances can propagate upstream through the wall, even if the flow is supersonic. Another method is necessary to deal with such a problem.

The effects of Joule-heating in a parallel flow of a weakly ionized gas between two flat walls are examined by expanding governing equations of the multi-component gas in power series of the electron March number. A parameter is proposed as a relevant quantity which characterizes the “two-temperature” gas. Further, the thermal boundary layer, the electric potential induced perpendicularly to walls and heat fluxes to walls due to electrons and neutrals are analysed in detail.

The hydromagnetic waves with small but finite amplitude in a cold collision-free plasma are investigated by using a nonlinear perturbation method. In the lowest order of perturbation, we can show that the system of equations for the magneto-acoustic wave propagating along a ‘critical’ direction is reduced to a simple dispersive equation similar to the Korteweg-de Vries equation except that the third order derivative (the dispersion term) is replaced by the fifth order one. An extension of the problem to more general dispersive system is also made. On the other hand, the system of equations for the Alfvén wave is reduced to a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation in the sense that the non-linear term

f⁄∂ξ in the Korteweg-de Vries equation is replaced by
f2∂⁄∂ξ. In the case of steady propagation this equation can be integrated to give a solution in closed form, which exhibits a solitary wave. Two kinds of solitary wave (both compressive and rarefied) are found to be possible.
