The gamma rays in the decay of
103Ru to
103Rh have been investigated with scintillation spectrometers in fast-slow coincidence, sum-coincidence and sum-peak coincidence modes. In the literature there is a lot of ambiguity about the existence of 65, 112, 176, 322 and 362 keV gamma transitions. Present measurements confirm the existence of these transitions. A 362 keV gamma transition between the 362 keV level and the ground state of
103Rh has been found to have an intensity
≤0.01%. Directional correlations of the 445-53 and 557-53 keV cascades have been observed and indicate spin-parity assignments 9/2
+, 7/2
− and 9/2
− for the 93, 538 and 650 keV levels of
103Rh.

The thermodynamic quantities of finite two- and three-dimensional ferromagnetic
XY-model such as 3×3 and 2×2×2 lattices have been calculated for the purpose of investigating the properties of liquid Helium II.
The density dependence of the λ-line for the finite quantum lattice gas model agrees with the results of molecular field approximation and the experimental data of pure He
4 liquid near the λ-transition.
The possibility of the occurrence of negative thermal expansion coefficient below the λ-point was roughly discussed with the use of the same consideration as the Ising model of Lee and Yang.
The magnetization versus field curve tends to a step function when the temperature becomes smaller than the critical temperature estimated from the maximum of the specific heat. There exists a great difference between the pure isotropic Heisenberg model and
XY-model in the case of ferromagnetic interaction at zero-temperature.

The mobility of a hole in a narrow
s-band is investigated for a simple model with a strong repulsive potential which acts only when two electrons are at the same atomic site. For simplicity it is assumed that

Nh are the total number of lattice sites and that of holes respectively. The conductivity is expressed in terms of the current correlation function, which is calculated using the moment method. The moments are evaluated with the aid of diagrammatic representations. The dependence of the hole mobility on the spin ordering is obtained. If all the electron spins are aligned in parallel, the hole mobility is infinite, but the disorder of spin orientations perturbs the motion of the hole. Conversely, if a partial orientation is induced for the spins which are initially in a disordered state, for instance, by an external magnetic field, the hole mobility may be increased. This is a new possible mechanism for negative magnetoresistance.

A new type of spin ordering in a spin-pair system is theoretically investigated. In the system, the intra-pair exchange interaction is antiferromagnetic and is much stronger than the inter-pair exchange interaction. In an external magnetic field, the excited triplet of the pair splits, and the lowest component of the triplet crosses the ground singlet at a certain magnitude of the field. In the vicinity of the point of level crossing, even the weak inter-pair exchange interaction causes a considerable amount of mixing between the singlet and the lowest component of the triplet. Due to the mixing, an ordering of the spin component perpendicular to the external field occurs. This ordering explains an anomaly which has been found by Haseda
et al. in their experiment of cooling by adiabatic magnetization of Cu(NO
3)
22.5H
2O.

The crystal dynamics of sodium nitrite has been studied by coherent neutron inelastic scattering techniques. The normal modes of vibration propagating along the three principal symmetry axes in the crystal at 296°K have been measured. The results have been used to find the parameters of rigid ion models for NaNO
2 in which the NO
2 ion was treated as a group. Although none of the models are entirely satisfactory they do give a fair description of the results. The temperature dependence of the frequencies of some of the normal modes was measured and none were found to be very temperature dependent near the ferroelectric transition. Ferroelectric critical scattering was observed which was quasi-elastic showing that the ferroelectric fluctuations change slowly compared with the frequencies of almost all the normal modes of vibration. A model is deduced for the ferroelectric fluctuations incorporating the motion of the atoms but it is found that the motion of the atoms in these fluctuations cannot be described by the same parameters as those used for the normal modes of vibration.

Unusually low thermal expansion was found out from some of the irreversible iron-nickel alloys, and its origin was investigated as a link of the Invar-problem. As the internal stresses were accumulated in these alloys by cold-work or, especially, by repeated thermal cycles between the martensitic transformations α\leftrightarrowsγ, the quantity of transformation from the γ phase to the α phase decreased till the alloys could not transform to the α phase but wholly retained the distorted γ′ state. And it was noticeable that this distorted state exhibited the Invar-like almost zero thermal expansion at a wide temperature range. For looking into this phenomenon further, the X-ray investigation as well as the thermal dilatation measurements were carried out. Therefrom it was concluded that the distorted γ′ state, which is composed of various intermediate structures such as produced on the way to the martensitic transformation γ→α, gives rise to various regions with different Curie points, especially, more regions with lower Curie points; it is such an inhomogeneous state of magnetization to cause the anomalous properties in the Invar alloys.

X-ray and magnetic studies have been made on the intermetallic compound Co
3+xTi
1−x. X-ray study indicates that Co
3+xTi
1−x with the Cu
3Au-type structure has the phase field ranging from about 20.5 to 25.0 at. % Ti(
x=0.180∼0) below 1,000°C. According to magnetic measurements, Co
3Ti(
x=0) is a paramagnetic substance with a practically temperature independent magnetic susceptibility, whereas Co
3+xTi
1−x(
x>0) is ferromagnetic with Curie points lower than 80°K and saturation magnetizations less than 20.8 emu/g.

The optical Zeeman effect measurements for Dy
3+ in YalO
3 have been made at 4.2°K. The angular dependence of
g-values in the ground state (
6H
15⁄2) is highly anisotropic, (
gz′=18.7±0.6,
gx′,
gy′∼0). One of the principal axes (
Z′ axis) of the
g-tensor is in the direction deviated by the angle of 31° from the [010] axis in the (001) plane. The angular dependence of
g-values in the excited states (
6F
5⁄2) is less anisotropic than that in the ground state. The direction of
Z′ axis in each crystal-field state is different and an explanation is proposed to interpret this result.

Earlier theories of transport phenomena in
n-InSb have been extended to include medium-high electron concentrations at high lattice temperatures (300° to 500°K) in presence of high electric fields. Polar optical mode of electron-phonon scattering has been considered to be the sole mechanism of electron scattering at these temperatures. The steady state electron distribution function has been chosen to be the Fermi-Dirac distribution function appropriate to the effective electron temperature which is determined by the energy balance condition. Nonparabolicity of the conduction band has been taken care of by the Kane’s model. It is seen that the effective electron temperature is not far above the lattice temperature even at the highest attainable fields and that the Galvano-thermo-magnetic transport coefficients do not exhibit any marked dependence on the strength of electric field under the present conditions. Some limitations and approximations have also been mentioned.

The spin-lattice relaxation rates of shallow donors in wurtzite-type semiconductors are calculated. The admixture of the excited
p-states with the ground 1
s-state through the
k-linear term in the conduction band and the trigonal component of the impurity potential plays an important role in the present relaxation mechanism in contrast with the case of the many valley semiconductors. In particular, it is shown that the
k linear term in the
Γ7 conduction band may contribute to the spin-lattice relaxation rate of shallow donors in CdS at liquid helium temperatures, taking into account the concentration dependent relaxation process. This relaxation process occurs through the hopping motion of donor electrons accompanied by reversal of spin orientation.

Electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient were measured at high temperatures (300°∼900°K) for the epitaxial n-GaAs of carrier concentrations ranging from 10
14 to 10
17 cm
−3. Analysis of the Hall data for the low concentration samples reveals the presence of a very large amount (10
19∼10
20 cm
−3) of deep centers (1.2∼1.3 eV from the conduction band bottom) and a small amount (10
14∼10
15 cm
−3) of less deep centers (∼0.4 eV). These are considered to be donor-like or electron trap centers. Energy difference between the (000) and (100) valleys at 0°K and its temperature coefficient were deduced to be ∼0.4 eV and 2∼3×10
−5 eV/°K from the Hall data for the high-concentration samples. Hall mobility due to polar mode and two-phonon resonant scatterings was calculated based on a relaxation time approximation. Agreement with the highest mobility data was satisfactory.

A theoretical interpretation is given for the lines in the excitation spectrum exhibited by interstitial lithium in germanium by calculating the ground state energies for the two possible interstitial positions for lithium (
Td and
D3d). This interpretation leads to the conclusion that the site symmetry of lithium in germanium is
Td, and the ground state is an “inverted” Group-V-like one with a very small chemical splitting. The ionization energy of the lowest ground state (1
s(
T1)) is 9.35 meV, lying 0.15 meV below the upper ground state (1
s(
A1)). The corresponding observed values are 9.89 meV and about 0.2 meV, respectively. Experiments to check the conclusion are suggested.

The time changes in the amplitude dependent internal friction are studied in β-tin crystals, 99.99% pure, and oriented as the [001] axis is nearly perpendicular to the specimen axis. The measurements are made during the free decay of transverse vibration, at temperatures from 90°C to −196°C.
Contrary to the results obtained in the crystals oriented for the [001] single slip, it is found that the internal friction decreases with the time of excitation, and increases with the time of rest after the excitation. At low temperatures, discontinuous change in the strain amplitude occurs when the measurements are made under constant driving force.

Fairly large crystals of α-Mn, 300∼400 mg in weight, have been obtained by a vapour transport method. It was found, however, that the crystals did not grow directly from the vapour phase, but grew by an indirect process in which deposited β-phase transforms to α-phase crystals when subsequently cooled. The oxygen content is much reduced in the deposited metal, but is increased by chemical polishing with HNO
3.

X-ray diffraction measurements have been made on the single crystal specimens at 293°K and 20°K. The data at 293°K are analyzed by assuming different temperature factors for the atoms in different sites. The structure parameters agree, to an accuracy of 10
−3 a, with those determined by Gazzara
et al. from the powder diffraction data. The temperature factor for site IV is found to be slightly smaller than those for the other sites. An attempt was made to detect the magnetostrictive atom displacements in the crystal at 20°K (
TN=95°K). Neither the tetragonality of the order of 10
−4 nor appreciable atom displacement was observed.

The dynamical theory of electron and X-ray diffraction for a distorted crystal, developed by Takagi, is applied to the Bragg case in a crystal of finite thickness. A crystal is divided into the front regions and back regions to which Green’s integral formula is applied. The transmitted and diffracted waves are represented in the integral forms in each region in a distorted crystal. The wave functions are analytically obtained in a perfect crystal of finite thickness and are calculated in the regions near an incident point. The waves are expressed by the superposition of several groups of Pendellösung fringes originating at different points. The diffracted wave has a strong intensity at the point to which comes the diffracted wave through the direct reflection of transmitted wave by the net plane at rear surface.

The rotational excitation of HD by low-energy electron collision is discussed for the first time. In the thermal-energy region, the Born approximation is used to derive relevant cross sections semi-quantitatively. In the eV-region, the adiabatic approximation is used to discuss the problem qualitatively. It is found that except in the neighborhood of the threshold energy, the rotational excitation cross section σ(
J→
J+2),
J being the rotational quantum number of the molecule, does not change much when H
2 is replaced by HD. For HD, transitions with odd
ΔJ are also allowed. However, the cross sections for these transitions are found to be fairly small. The momentum-transfer and the rotational stopping cross sections are discussed. Excitation of D
2 is also considered for comparison.

Ionization efficiency curves (IE curves) of Ar and Mg are measured up to 1000 eV by crossed beam method. A mass spectrometer is used for separation of multiply charged ions. Abundance ratios of multiply charged ions to singly charged ion at 500 eV are obtained up to five fold and three fold charge for Ar and Mg respectively. The summations of the IE curves of multiply charged ions agree well with the absolute total ionization curves obtained by other workers. The IE curve of Ar
+ has two maxima at 45 eV and 90 eV. Remarkable structures are found at 255 eV for Ar
3+ and Ar
4+ and they are attributed to an Auger process or an electron shake-off caused by the ionization of inner shell electrons. A break at 55 eV for Mg
2+ is probably attributed to autoionization arising from the excitation of inner shell electron which occurs below 55 eV. The curves for Ar
2+, Mg
+ and Mg
3+ seem to have no structures.

B system by superimposing a vertical magnetic field

The width of electron plasma oscillations is measured with a spectrum analyzer. An autocorrelation function of the oscillation is also measured with a standing wave detector and delay lines. The measured oscillations are set up as a standing wave between electrodes in a low pressure discharge tube. By changing discharge parameters several modes of standing wave are observed. In the middle of each mode the oscillation is strongest and its width is narrowest, being smaller than the collision frequency. The measured autocorrelation function is of an exponential type which gives Lorentzian spectrum. The width of it accords with that observed by the spectrum analyzer. When a low frequency oscillation is present spontaneously or artificially, the line shape of plasma oscillation displayed on the spectrum analyzer seems to be broad, but the time resolved one is sharp.

The steady two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow with a uniform suction or injection past a semi-infinite flat plate in the cross fields is studied on the assumption of small magnetic Reynolds number. The transformed boundary layer equation is found to be a non-similar one and an attempt is made to solve it numerically by a difference-differential method originated by Hartree and Womersley. Numerical results for various values of parameters are given for the velocity profile, coefficient of skin friction, displacement thickness and momentum thickness, and the effects of the magnetic field on a role of suction or injection are investigated.

Estimations are given for frequency spectra of gravitational waves radiated from usual celestial phenomena. These analyses are intended to present the orientation to this problem by describing several typical examples. Next, possible sources for Wever’s experiment are searched. It turns out that there are no possible candidates among usual astronomical events to account for that observation. A possibility is suggested based upon mass-exchange in a binary containing a neutron-star.
