About thallium and its dilute alloys with indium and tin, some physical quantities were measured as functions of concentration. The heat of transition of pure thallium was also measured. In Tl–In system at 25°C the Hall coefficient decreases monotonically with increasing concentration of indium. The heat of transition at 235°C of the transformation from hexagonal close-packed to body-centred cubic structure for thallium is 0.44 cal/gr.. The increment of electrical resistivity of Tl–Sn with addition of Sn is about five times as large as that of Tl–In. These results were discussed in terms of pseudopotential method. The results of calculations can explain qualitatively the general trend of these physical properties, though perfect quantitative agreement between theory and measurement is not attained.

A formulation of stochastic approach to chemical kinetics is presented in a general form. The formulation is constructed based on the probability of the first reaction time, so that it can be applied to more general cases in which, for instance, the rate of reaction is given by a function of time. As a special example, bimolecular reaction process in liquid medium is considered and explicit formulae to analyze the space and time correlations of the process as a many-particle system are derived. The relation with usual stochastic equation of chemical kinetics is also discussed.

The reaction kinetics of irradiated RNA molecules is analysed for the cases when dimer formation (not splitting) and hydration of uracil residues take place. After a sufficient time has elapsed, such molecules consist entirely of dimers and hydrated sites, at which time it is of interest to know the average (over an ensemble of molecules) proportion of hydrated sites. This average is obtained (i) exactly as a function of molecule length and, (ii) to any desired accuracy for infinitely long molecules.

The Green’s function method developed by Mahan for excitons is extended to the case that the interaction is not instantaneous. Energy corrections to the exciton due to recoil effects, retardation effects, renormalization constants and vertex parts arising from the interactions of an electron and a hole forming an exciton with longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, which were treated by Haken in another simplified manner, are explicitly calculated by using the extended method to first order in electron-phonon coupling constant α and in (
E⁄hω
l), where
E is the binding energy of the exciton and ω
l is the LO phonon frequency. It is shown that in these corrections, the recoil effect and the retardation effect cancel out each other and the renormalization effect and the vertex effect cancel out each other, and a resultant effective interaction between the electron and hole is reduced to Haken’s result for large electron-hole separations.

The localization of electrons in random lattice is investigated with the Green’s function method following Anderson’s probabilistic approach.
The energy dependence of the critical value (
W⁄2
V)
c for localization is obtained for a system with a potential fluctuation of width
W and a short range type effective transfer energy
V. The calculated results suggest that localized states appear preferably in the edges of the energy spectrum, and, with the increase in the ratio
W⁄
V, the regions of lacalized states spread toward the central region and finally cover the whole spectrum. Further, in a one-electron scheme, the effect of electron correlations on the localization of electrons is studied as a source of dynamical potential fluctuation. It is shown that electron correlations are quite effective for the electron localization, especially when correlation energy

Having diagonalized the vibronic problem, a triply degenerate state coupled to a threefold vibration, we present calculated absorption and emission spectra for weak and moderate coupling strengths. The three peaked structure predicted by Toyozawa and Inoue appears at high temperatures and moderate coupling. However, some unexpected features (asymmetry of the structure, significant temperature dependence) also occur.
The rotation-vibration coupling strengths in spherical top molecules having vibronically coupled triplet states are given.

The perpendicular anisotropy, which has its easy axis perpendicular to the film surface, was measured for electrodeposited Ni and Ni–P films containing up to 7 at % P, and also for an annealed film at temperature up to 400°C. These measurements were correlated with the magnetization, the internal stress and the structure of the films. The perpendicular anisotropy for a Ni film is explained only in a term of the magneto-stress term of −3⁄2λσ. On the other hand, for Ni–P films it is caused by the anomalous term, whose origin is due to the existence of non-magnetic high phosphorus-nickel region elongated perpendicular to the film surface. Such an existence of the inhomogeneous distribution of phosphorus is suggested experimentally. The anomalous term is quantitatively explained by this model.

The magnetic phase diagram of Co(S
xSe
1−x)
2, the solid solution between ferromagnetic CoS
2 and antiferromagnetic CoSe
2, has been given by neutron diffraction experiment, where the paramagnetism at absolute zero was found in the range 0.5<
x<0.88. This paramagnetic state is named “exchange-compensated paramagnetism”. A new type metamagnetism has been found in this paramagnetic state at
x=0.86. This behavior had been already predicted theoretically by M. Hattori, K. Adachi and H. Nakano in J. Phys. Soc. Japan
26 (1969) 642. The metamagnetic properties have been measured under a strong magnetic field up to 75 kOe and in the temperature range 4.2°K to 800°K. The metamagnetism shows the hysteresis without remanence below 34°K and the saturation moment agrees with that of CoS
2. The obtained results have been analyzed from the thermostatistical standpoint with an analogy of the condensation of imperfect gas and the critical indices have been determined. The origin of the exchange-compensated paramagnetism and the mechanism of the metamagnetism have been discussed.

4 and nearly zero for CuCr

4, respectively. If the main exchange interaction in a pair of Cr ions is thought to be the ferromagnetic superexchange of the Cr–X–Cr type and the antiferromagnetic direct interaction of the Cr–Cr type, it can be seen from the results of the present experiment that the direct Cr–Cr interaction is more sensitive to lattice compression than the superexchange Cr–X–Cr. The magnetic properties of those compounds are also reported.

Measurements of the Mn
55 nuclear magnetic resonance, high-field susceptibility, magnetic anisotropy and electrical resistivity have been performed on intermetallic compound MnB
2.
It is proposed that MnB
2 is an antiferromagnet with a magnetic moment of about 3 μ
B per Mn atom and a Néel point of 760°K. The weak ferromagnetism below 157°K is attributed to the tilting of the antiferromagnetic moments out of the
c-plane. Unusual temperature dependence of the susceptibility and the mechanism for the tilting are discussed on the basis of the
s-
d exchange interaction.

The zero-field NMR of Mn
55 in ferromagnetic MnBi has been observed in the temperature range 4.2°K to 500°K. Resonance signals from nuclei in the domain and domain wall are separately observed at 225.01 MHz, and 206 MHz, respectively, at 294°K. As the temperature is decreased, the quadrupole splitting and the frequency of the central line for the domain signal decrease gradually below 142°K and a temperature somewhat lower than 142°K, respectively, and change abruptly at 90°K. These results show that below 142°K the magnetic moment deviates gradually from the
c-axis and flops into the
c-plane at 90°K. The temperature dependence of the NMR intensity has also been observed, from which a qualitative temperature variation of the anisotropy constant
K1 has been obtained.
The hyperfine field and
e2qQ⁄
h extrapolated to 0°K are −224.5 kOe and 14.0 MHz, respectively.

It is shown that all the zeros of the partition function lie on the unit circle in the complex ‘fugacity’ plane and the first inequality of Griffiths, Kelly and Sherman for the spin correlation functions also holds for the anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnets as in the Ising model. The isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnets and the Ising ferromagnets are involved as special cases and thus the methods of this article provide alternative proof of the corresponding theorems in the Ising model.

The deformation stacking fault probability α and twin stacking fault probability β in cold-worked copper-antimony alloys have been obtained from peak shift and peak asymmetry measurements of the X-ray line profiles, and the fault parameter α has been found to increase in a roughly parabolic manner with increasing solute concentration but the increase with increasing solute valency for fixed
e⁄
a is not clearly established. The anisotropic values of the particle size [
De]
hkl and r. m. s. strain [〈ε
L2〉]
hkl1⁄2 have been evaluated using both Fourier analysis of line shapes and integral breadth methods, and the lattice parameters have been found to vary considerably with increasing solute content. The values of the compound fault probability (1.5α+β) obtained from two independent methods are in fair agreement and the role of stacking faults in the particle size broadening is clearly seen. Particle sizes and strain values are also utilized for an estimation of dislocation density ρ in the cold-worked materials.

Based on the energy bands for the paramagnetic hexagonal Co metal, the spin paramagnetic susceptibility χ

orb for Ti metal are calculated. By the use of the approximate energy bands built up from these energy bands in consideration of the spin-orbit interaction in the tight binding approximation, the contributions to the paramagnetic susceptibilities, χ

d h. c. p. transition metals are calculated. These contributions have an appreciable temperature dependence, and χ
s and χ
orb are nearly the same. The 5
d transition metals have the mixed contribution χ
so appreciably. The experimental results of the paramagnetic susceptibilities for these transition metals can be explained by use of these contributions by adopting the reasonable values of the molecular field coefficient.

The
I–
V characteristics of point contacts between superconductors have been studied for their dependence on the temperature, the magnetic field and the microwave power level. Structures which appeared in the
I–
V characteristics in the absence of microwave powers have been related to the enhanced superconductivity of a part of the contacts and the subharmonic tunneling effects. Most of the temperature dependence of the zero-voltage current can be explained by considering the spatial variation of the current density and introducing a “mean Josephson penetration depth”. Microwave power dependence of the amplitude of induced steps disagrees with the Bessel function behavior. The discrepancy may be caused by the effect of the Josephson penetration depth.

Structural phase changes in K
2SeO
4 have been found at 129.5°K and 93°K by introducing free radical SeO
4− as a probe.
The structure in the temperature range between 129.5°K and 93°K is expected to be orthorhombic with the crystallographic axes coincident with those of room temperature. The unit cell may contain twelve molecules located at three different sites. A superstructure, a tripled lattice parameter along the
a axis, has been found by X-ray diffraction method and an expected space group is
Pnam. It is ferroelectric along the
c axis below 93°K. A possible unit cell contains twelve molecules located at six different sites and is monoclinic in the space group
P2
1, in which the superstructure is maintained. The crystal probably consists of fine twins with the common
c axis and they are related with each other by mirror planes. The higher transition is of second order and the lower of first order. Conformations of radicals SeO
2− and SeO
3− in the crystal lattice are illustrated.

The directions of the CH bonds of \dotCH
2COO
− radical in
TGS at liquid nitrogen temperature were determined. The activation energy for the exchange of two hydrogens in the radical was also determined to be 0.16±0.03 eV, from the temperature dependence of ESR spectrum. A motional narrowing of proton resonance line in NMR will be expected at about 110°K, if the two hydrogens in glycine (I) would exchange their positions to each other in the unirradiated
TGS crystal.

The directions of the lines joining two protons in water molecules (

p pairs) in Rochelle salt were determined by means of proton magnetic resonance. The result shows that the directions of the 4 kinds of
p–
p pairs in the unit cell agree within the error with the ones estimated from the EFG tensors of deuteriums in deuterated Rochelle salt, respectively, which were determined by Bjorkstam and Willmorth. The direction cosines and the distances of the
p–
p pairs thus obtained are 0.52, 0.47, 0.72, 1.49 A for the water molecule (7), in the notation of Beevers and Hughes, 0.21, 0.97, 0.14, 1.57 A for (8), 0.88, 0.34, 0.34, 1.59 A for (9) and 0.39, 0.33, 0.86, 1.69 A for (10).

The theory for inelastic scattering in low energy electron diffraction is developed. The effects of diffraction of low energy electron beam on the inelastic scattering are predicted. The diffraction enhances or diminishes the usual intensity of inelastically-scattered electron beam from the crystal surface. The effects of surface-phonon excitations and surface-plasmon excitations are considered in detail.

Heavy charged particle (proton, deuteron and He
+ ion) impact ionization cross-sections of the noble gas atoms have been calculated using Gryzinski’s formula with exponential velocity distribution function. Low energy behavior of the cross-section formula is investigated and the threshold expression given by Gryzinski is found to be incorrect. Dependence of the cross-section on the mass of the system is also discussed.

Ionization efficiency curves (IE curves) of Ca, Sr and Ba by electron impact in the energy range from the ionization potentials to 1000 eV are obtained with a mass spectrometer which has a crossed beam ion source. The ions having up to three fold positive charges are studied. The IE curves of Ca
+, Sr
+ and Ba
+ have some structures which correspond to autoionization processes. They are observed at 25.5 eV and 28.5 eV for Ca
+, 19 eV, 21.5 eV and 24 eV for Sr
+, and 15 eV and 19 eV for Ba
+. The IE curves of Ca
2+, Sr
2+ and Ba
2+ have remarkable breaks at 30 eV, 27.5 eV and 20 eV respectively, which are attributed to Auger processes, and many humps are observed below the breaks in the IE curves of Ca
2+ and Sr
2+. The IE curve of Ba
3+ has a break at about 86 eV, which is also attributed to Auger cascade. The relative abundance ratios of the multiply charged ions to the singly charged ions obtained at 500 eV are compared with those by other works.

By use of a laser light source and photoelectric light mixing technique, spectral densities of light scattered from solutions of tobacco mosaic virus particles were measured in order to obtain translational and rotational diffusion coefficients,

Θ, of the particle. The observed values of
D20 and
Θ20 are 0.29±0.01×10

−1 and 360±20 sec
−1, respectively, for the 3 mg/ml solution. These coefficients were markedly dependent on the protein concentration of solutions below 1 mg/ml.
In addition, the intensity due to the coupling of translational and rotational Brownian motions was observed, which agreed with a theoretical prediction.

The continuous sinusoidal pseudo waves excited by a grid are studied experimentally and theoretically. For the small exciting voltage the received signal contains an ion wave. For the large exciting voltage the signal of the pseudo wave is dominant. The velocity of the pseudo wave is given by α(2
eVp–p⁄
M)
1⁄2 empirically. The reduction factor α is explained by the transit time effect which occurs when the ions are accelerated by an alternating electric field in the sheath surrounding the exciting grid. It is shown that pseudo waves may be excited even if the damping ratio δ⁄λ is larger than the value given by Hirshfield and Jacob. The effect of the ion-atom collision and the electric current for waves are studied.
In this experiment the plasma is generated by the funnel-typed source which is the differentially pumped one for producing a quiescent plasma and is able to control the various plasma parameters.

An experimental study is presented which is concerned with the transition from the three-body to the dissociative electron-ion recombination in an argon plasma. The measurements are performed, by using the propagation technique of the 8 mm wave, in decaying plasmas produced behind reflected shock waves in a
T-type tube. It is filled with argon at initial pressures from 5 to 18 Torr. The electron densities and temperatures are respectively in the ranges from 10
13 to 10
10 cm
−3 and from 10
3 to 3×10
2°K. The recombination coefficients determined from the measured density decays are explained by the three-body recombination process for the electron densities above 10
12 cm
−3. The coefficients, on the other hand, are interpreted by the dissociative process for the electron densities below 10

−3 with the electron temperatures close to 3×10
2°K. The transition between these two processes is discussed.

Some basic properties of the coupling between an electron wave and an ion wave due to scattering by thermal electrons are discussed by comparing them with those of the coupling due to three-wave interactions. The construction and the performance of a new type of plasma source, designed by applying a magnetic field similar to that in the divertor of the stellarator, are described. The plasma parameters are measured by Langmuir probes. A hollow plasma of He with a density of the order of 10
10 particles/cm
3 is produced along the separatrix line of force in this apparatus. The fluctuation of the plasma density is rather small. Since this new type plasma source has no electrode on the axis, it is possible to introduce it for some stationary torus machine.

In a turbulent plasma heated by a strong electric field, the forbidden lines of HeI 4
1F→2
1P and 4
3F→2
3D showed themselves as the satellite of allowed transition of HeI 4
1D→2
1P and 4
3D→2
3P lines. The appearance of these satellites is due to the electric field of the waves in the turbulent plasma. In 1.0μs after the electric field was switched on, the plasma was heated up to the energy density of 1×10
15 eV/cm
3 and the satellite had shaded away.
The energy density of the electric fields in the plasma is estimated to be 1×10
13 eV/cm
3. The degree of plasma turbulence is found to be \gtrsim0.01, which is in rough agreement with the result that Demidov
et al. obtained by the combination scattering of the electromagnetic wave.

The full description of the nonlinear interaction between positive-energy and negative-energy waves in a dispersive medium is derived with the use of the concept of quasi-particles. The generalized Manley-Rowe relations in terms of the occupation numbers (actions) of positive-energy and negative-energy quasi-particles (waves) are obtained in a dispersive medium. The extended rate-equations are also obtained, which describe the temporal and spatial variation of the numbers of quasi-particles. As an interesting case for the nonlinear negative-energy instability, the three-wave interaction is discussed, in which a signal wave excited by a pumping wave has a convective or an absolute instability with the help of a negative-energy idler wave.

The stationary flow of a viscous fluid past a flat plate at a small incidence, θ, is dealt with by Oseen’s linearized approximation. The behavior of flow at a high Reynolds number,

Flow of a rarefied gas over an infinite plane wall is considered on the basis of a relaxation model of the Boltzmann equation. The solution is obtained in the form: Hilbert solution and boundary layer term which is appreciable only in a thin layer (with thickness of order of the mean free path) adjacent to the boundary. The Hilbert part dominates in the region away from the boundary. By using these results the asymptotic behavior (for small mean free path) of plane compressible Couette flow is investigated.

For a single spherical drop suspended in an unbounded viscous fluid streaming with arbitrary velocity distribution, a general method is presented to calculate the external and internal flow fields of the drop and to evaluate deviation of the drop interface from sphericity. Based upon Lamb’s solution in terms of solid spherical harmonics for Stokes flow, boundary conditions to be satisfied at the interface can be replaced by some simple relations between the solid harmonics, which, in conjunction with Laplace’s condition for surface tension, give an expression for the drop deformation without detailed knowledge of the flow fields. As examples, both two-dimensional and axially symmetric Poiseuille flows are considered.
