Computer experiments have been carried out on the model which simulates Takahasi model of BaTiO
3 in the paraelectric phase. The lattice vibrations are studied on the monatomic linear chain in which each atom is in double minimum potential and is connected to nearest neighbor atoms by springs with the spring constant
L. By tracing tracing the motions of all the atoms by Fourier analysis of the motions the
k–ω dispersions are obtained. It has turned out that the increase of
L induces many low frequency vibrations especially in the range of small
k. The inherent relations to actual ferroelectric crystals are discussed.

The sublattice magnetization and the specific heat of CoCl
2·6H
2O are calculated with the use of antiferromagnetic spin wave theory and compared with the experiments. With the spin wave spectrum obtained, the calculation gives the
T4-law of the sublattice magnetization, which agrees with the experiment satisfactorily with a slightly different proportional constant from that given by Renard. On the hand, the calculated specific heat shows a different temperature dependence from the experiment by Donaldson and Edmonds. In the present case, the effect of the magnon-phonon interaction is shown to be small.

A modified valence-force-field (VFF) model is applied to the lattice dynamics of trigonal selenium. Five adjustable parameters, four valence-force-constants (
Kr,
Kθ,
Krr′,
Krθ) within intra-chain couplings and one inter-chain force constant (
KR), are determined from the observed six elastic constants by mans of the least squares method. By using these fore constants, comparable fits to the
Γ-point optical frequencies for the A
1, E
1 and E
2 modes are obtained except that for the A
2 mode. However, the last can be also accounted for well if the contribution of about 50 cm
−1 from the long-range electrostatic interaction is taken into account. The estimation of the above contribution seems reasonable from the view-point of the shell-model analysis due to Chen and Zallen [Phys. Rev.
173 (1968) 833]. In conclusion, the modified VFF employed here reflects the bonding in trigonal Se fairly well.

Metallic double-exchange ferromagnets such as doped LaMnO
3 are investigated on the basis of an effective Hamiltonian derived from the
s-
d model Hamiltonian. Resistance at low temperatures is calculated in the spin wave approximation and it is found to be proportional to
T9⁄2. Magnetic behaviors of the system at finite temperatures are examined by the use of a simple molecular field theory. A magnetization-temperature curve which fits well the experimental data of Leung
et al. is obtained. Resistance and magneto-resistance are also studied.

Temperature dependent absorption strength of several absorption bands of MnF
2 and RbMnF
3 in visible and ultra-violet region is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The oscillator strength for the exciton-magnon transitions increases as temperature increases up to Néel temperature
TN or even above
TN, and saturates or varies only slightly at higher temperatures. It is found, however, that the temperature dependence of the cold band intensity below
TN is quite different from this as expected from the theory. The temperature variation of the intensity of the two-exciton transitions is somewhat similar of that of the cold band, namely, the intensity starts to decrease with the increase of
T below
TN and is nearly constant or increases slightly above
TN.
Theoretical explanations for these experimental results are presented. The calculation which assumes inter- and intrasublattice pair excitation leads to the results in qualitative agreement with the experiment. Causes of quantitative discrepancy are also discussed.

The magnetic field and concentration dependences of the paramagnetic spin relaxation in some nickel tutton salts and a cupric nitrate salt are studied by non-resonant type experiment. A modified Hartshorn bridge operating up to 100 kHz was used inside a high field superconducting magnet of the maximum field of 60 kOe.
At temperature region from 4.2 K to 1.5 K, high frequency susceptibilities show that there are several relaxation processes at some special values of magnetic field, of which relaxation times are faster than that of usual spin-lattice relaxation. The observed relaxation phenomena have been successfully explained by various types of multiple spin flip cross relaxation. The cross relaxation phenomena among unlike spins are also observed in the diluted mixed crystals of (Ni–Mn)-, (Ni–Fe)-, and (Ni–Co)- ammonium tutton salts.
Qualitative explanations are given of the anomalous field dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation time of Co(NH
4)
2· (SO
4)
2·6H
2O from the view point of the cross relaxation process between Co
2+ and Ni
2+, where Ni
2+ ions are present as small amount of impurity.

Magnetic and Mössbauer effect measurements on the nitrides with hcp metal lattice of V, Cr, Mn and Fe are carried out as a function of composition. Hexagonal VN
x and hexagonal CrM
x are Pauli paramagnetic. Hexagonal MnN
x shows antiferromagnetism, while both hexagonal and orthorhombic FeN
x show ferromagnetism at low temperatures. In these Phases, nitrogen atoms suppress magnetic ordering in consequence of the reduction of magnetic moments. As a whole, the observed types of magnetism of hexagonal nitrides resemble those of their metals in spite of the difference in crystal structures. Type II superconductivity is found in hexagonal VN
x although it is not yet conclusive.

K1 and induced magnetic anisotropy
Ku of Fe–Al single crystals containing about 20 at. % Al were measured with a torque meter. The
K1 of the 21.0 at. % Al alloy showed negative magnetic field dependence in high field, and the value of
K1 showed a maximum at 360 K. The behavior of
K1 is explained on the basis that a specimen is in a two-phase state, one of which is disordered matrix having positive
K1 and the other is precipitated Fe
3Al phase having negative
K1. The deviation of
Ku from directional order theory is explained by assuming that the shape anisotropy of Fe
3Al particles plays an important role.

Mössbauer effect measurements of powdered Fe(HCOO)
2·2H
2O have been made at temperatures between 4.2 and 1.6 K and at the temperature of 0.027 K in average. A unit cell of this salt contains two each of inequivalent iron ions at
A and
B sites. Values of Mössbauer parameters at these two types of sites obtained at 4.2 K agree with those obtained at 6 K by other authors within experimental error. It is found that the internal magnetic at
A sites is practically saturated at 1.6 K, while that at
B sites remains to be zero even at 0.027 K; this suggests that spins at
B sites are quenched at low temperatures. Mössbauer parameters for the
A site are determined at 1.6 K.

The relaxation phenomena associated with the metamagnetic phase transition in CoCl
2·2H
2O, have been studied by applying the A. C. susceptibility measurement method under high external magnetic field up to 54 kOe parallel to the easy direction. (i) from the frequency dependence of height of peaks of A. C. susceptibility, χ′ and χ″, at transition points, the relaxation time τ’s is estimated. τ(at
Hc1=31.6 KOe)>2×10
−3 sec, and τ(at
Hc2=46.0 kOe)\fallingdotseq2×10
−5 sec at 4.2 K. Both tend longer as temperature goes down from 4.2 to 1.6 K. (ii) there are two another susceptibility peaks at 36.8 and 41.1 kOe besides those at
Hc1 and
Hc2. (iii) height of these peaks showed hysteresis on the sweep direction. (iv) a step in magnetization curve is found 36.8 kOe in addition to the steps at
Hc1 and
Hc2.
A tentative explanation is given of these phenomena from the view point of metastable domain.

Nuclear magnetic resonance signals are observed from nuclei in domains and in domain walls in ferromagnetic manganese antimonide. Internal magnetic fields are measured at the manganese, antimony sites at 77 K and 296 K. The difference in the internal magnetic fields measured at the Sb site using the Sb
123, Sb
121 resonances respectively could be explained to a hyperfine anomaly
121Δ123=−(0.36±0.05)%. Resonance signals are also observed in Cr
xMn
1−xSb (
x=0.01, 0.03 and 0.05). The observed broadening of the resonance lines is discussed.

Superconducting bridges were constructed using tin films superimposed with ferromagnetic nickel. The critical currents were strongly depressed in the gapless state compared with the “mean-field” critical currents given by Ginzburg-Landau equations. In the presence of an applied microwave field, (1) quasi-periodic power dependence of induced current steps was observed, (2) no subharmonic step appeared, (3) the step structure resembled to that of point contacts. These observations in our superconducting bridges are different from those in Anderson-Dayem bridges reported earlier. Our bridges in the gapless state are concluded to be very weak links and have a sinusoidal current-phase relationship.

Effect of electric field on the paraconductivity σ
1 of Pb–Al
2O
3–Al junctions has been investigated, and a phenomenological analysis has been performed on the basis of Ferrell’s theory and the Langevin equation of the superconducting order parameter. The junction paraconductivity observed at temperatures slightly the transition temperature of the aluminum film is found to decrease with increasing the electric field
E applied to the aluminum film parallel to converge rapidly to a temperature-independent asymptote proportional to
E−p where
p=1.5±0.2. This asymptote at high fields is successfully derived with
p=5⁄3 from the present phenomenological theory, whereas a discrepancy is found in the intermediate field region, where theory, predicts that σ
1 is inversely proportional to
E but the observed values converge much rapidly to the asymptote.

Temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarization of ferroelectric AgNa(NO
2)
2 was measured by pyroelectric method in a temperature region of −150°C∼+40°C. The spontaneous polarization in the comply ordered state is estimated to be 9.85 μC cm

Luminescence of Tb

xPO
4 under the strong and selective excitation of
5D4 manifold of Tb
3+ ion is investigated using the 488 nm light from an argon ion laser at 1.8 K. Besides the strong luminescence from
5D4, weak anti-Stokes luminescence from
5D3 is observed. On the basis of the arguments in which the dependence of the pumping rate of
5D3 on the Tb
3+ concentration is analyzed, it is verified that due to the resonance energy transfer between two excited Tb
3+ ions, one ion is excited into higher states, thus yielding the observed anti-Stokes luminescence. The Probability of this energy transfer for the nearest neighbor ion pair is experimentally estimated as 10
6 sec
−1.

By the use of the resonance method, the electrostrictive coefficient
Q33 and the elastic compliance coefficients
s33D,
s33E have been determined from −70°C to 50°C. In the ferroelectric phase,
Q33 was obtained from the piezoelectric coefficient and spontaneous polarization, while in the paraelectric phase it was obtained from the field-induced piezoelectricity. An
ac bias was used to avoid the errors arising from a space charge polarization. The coefficient
Q33 (1.8×10
−12 CGSesu) was found to be nearly temperature independent throughout the para- and ferroelectric phases. Further it agreed with the value estimated from the spontaneous strain. These facts indicate that the strain is proportional to the square of polarization over the temperature range investigated. While
s33E exhibits a pronounced anomaly below
TC,
s33D (3.0×10
−12 cm
2/dyn) is almost temperature independent. Thermodynamic discussion is made of stress dependence of the transition point.

Luminescence and related optical properties of Er
3+ and Yb
3+-doped YF
3, Y
3OCl
7 and YOCl phosphors are precisely and extensively measured in the range from 4.2 K to room temperature, in order to investigate the mechanism and controlling factors of infrared-to-visible conversion. It is concluded that the red luminescence emitted from Er:
4F9⁄2 is produced by two energy transfers from Yb
3+ to Er
3+ ions, and that
4F9⁄2 is directly populated from Er:
4I13⁄2 by the second energy transfer. The cutoff phonon energy and electron-phonon coupling constant of the hosts, which dominate the probabilities of internal relaxation and phonon-assisted energy transfer, are indicated to be important controlling factors for the conversion process, in addition to the relative energy positions of Yb:
2F5⁄2 and Er:
4I11⁄2. The hosts having larger values of these factors, such as Y
3OCl
7, are advantageous to the red luminescence, while those with the opposite tendency, such as YF
3, are favorable to the green luminescence.

Transmission spectra of KI crystals doped with copper impurities of concentration as high as 0.02 to 1 mole per cent have been investigated. When these crystals are anneals are at above 350°C, the doped copper coagulates and forms CuI micro-crystals in the host KI lattice. The spectra show two char acteristic peaks closely to CuI exciton bands. As the concentration of copper increases, a dip appears in the high energy side of the respective peak, and the profile becomes antiresonance type. These phenomena are explained as interference effects between the exciton resonance of CuI cluster and the light scattered by the cluster dispersed in the host. The spectra are also numerically calculated on the basis of the Mie theory in classical electromagnetism. The calculated line shape is in good agreement with observed ones; the calculated antiresonance dip increases as the size of cluster becomes larger, in qualitative agreement with the experimental results.

Transient formation of F, H and α centers and self trapped excitons has been investigated in KBr crystals by the irradiation of the pulsed electron beam from a Linac (30MeV, 0.8A, 20ns) and a Febetron 706 (0.6MeV, 7000A, 3ns). The α center concentration is at most 1/25 of the F center. The F and H center pair is concluded to be the primary product. The fast growth times of F and H centers, which are shorter than 3ns, suggest that the lowest triplet and singlet states of the trapped exciton do not have any direct participation in the F center formation.

A theoretical and experimental study has been made on the anomalous transmission of X-rays in the Laue-case diffraction of nearly perfect crystals with a special reference to the asymmetric diffraction. For the theoretical analysis the dispersion equation has been solved to an approximation higher than that usually used, because the usual two-wave approximation is rather poor in the extremely asymmetric case of diffraction. The theoretical analysis shows that the intensity of the anomalously transmitted wave increases with the asymmetry of diffraction and reaches 42% of the incident intensity when μ·
t\fallingdotseq10. These facts have been confirmed experimentally with the use of the parallel setting of the double-crystal arrangement, in which (220) diffraction of Si is used with CrK
α1.

2OH are also determined. No splitting due to the inversion of the NH
2-group is resolved.

A model theory has been proposed, which explains the polymorphism of
Salmonella flagella observed by Asakura.
Relation between the overall shapes of the helical flagellar filaments and the shapes of their constituents,
i.e., the flagellin monomer units is derived with the aid of two parameters, the curvature and the torsion of the helix. The model proposed is based upon the assumptions that the flagellin molecules in the flagellum assume two states R and T depending upon circumstances, as discussed by Asakura, that the flagellar filament consists of eight strands of the flagellin monomer units, and that the five polymorphs have one, three, five, seven and eight T-type strands, respectively. Agreement is obtained between the observed and calculated values of curvatures and torsions of the helical flagellar filaments, and the parameters are determined, which characterize the shapes of the flagellin monomer units.

The reductive perturbation method is applied to the Vlasov equation which governs the one dimensional motion of collisionless plasmas. The present formulation makes it possible to investigate the nonlinear modulation of the plasma waves with an arbitrary dispersion. The nonlinear behaviour of Landau damping is investigated numerically. The basic equations are able to describe the amplitude oscillation, linear Landau damping, and intermediate regions of wave behaviour. If

The flow of a power law fluid in a tube with a boundary of sinusoidal deformation in the axial coordinate is studied in detail. The solution for the stream function is obtained as a power series in terms of the amplitude of the deformation of the boundary ε, the zeroth order solution corresponds to the case of flow in a smooth straight pipe of circular cross section. The effects of waviness of the boundary are evaluated and are depicted graphically. The streamlines are found to deform to a great extent as they approach the boundary of the tube and are parallel to the axis when they are considered near the axis of the tube. The amplitude of the deformation is found to influence the streamlines very much.

A new type of flow which is induced by thermal stress in rarefied gas is presented by investigating a behavior of gas around a sphere with a constant temperature which is placed in an infinite expanse of gas at rest with a uniform temperature gradient.
The analysis is based on the asymptotic theory for slightly rarefied gas developed by the author.
A flow with magnitude of the order of the Kundsen number squared is induced from hotter to colder region. The sphere is subject to a force in the direction of the given temperature gradient.

A quasi-onedimensional theory which was developed by Tsuge and Fujiwara for the free detonation propagating through an explosive gas column immersed in an inert gas environment separated from the former by a thin film is applied to the same problem in examining the effect of external pressures.
For the oxyozone free detonation with arbitrarily selected parameters (14 mole per cent ozone, the initial temperature of the entire system 300 K, the initial charge pressure l atm, the charge diameter 1 cm and the environmental inert gas Argon), the double-valuedness as the limit of the propagation velocity which was met in examining the effects of other parameters is obtained. It is found that the Newtonian approximation can be used for moderate values of the inert environmental pressure (0.7∼7 atm), and in the other pressure range (
p00<0.7 atm and
p00>7 atm) the quasi-onedimensional theory breaks down, though such results have no relationship with the obtained double-valuedness of the propagation velocity and the existence of the limit.

Steady flow past a body (or bodies) fixed in a uniform the flow of dusty gas is considered. The general feature of the flow field is given when the relaxation time of the dust particles is infinite. Especially, it is shown that the velocity field of the gas is exactly the same as that of the incompressible invisid fluid which does not contain any dust particle and the effect of the dust particles modifies only the pressure of the gas when the body is semi-infinite and its cross section never shrinks as going downstream.

Asymptotic behaviours of a grey, inviscid, non-conducting gas flow past a black body with arbitrary smooth shape are studied analytically. It is shown that the flow field is composed of three parts; an isentropic outer region, a diffusion type (Rosseland type) middle layer and a purely radiative inner layer. These two layers are thin, in which boundary layer treatments are made. Formal solutions in the inner layer and reduced equations with reduced boundary conditions (
e.g. slip coefficients) in the other regions are obtained to the first orders of expansion with respect to the inverse square root of a large global optical thickness.
The results are compared with those by the moment method (P. Cheng; AIAA J.
4 (1966) 238) and its modification. The moment method does not give the inner layer. It gives smaller temperature slip coefficients. Its curvature effects on the middle layer are different from those by the present exact treatment.

Steady solutions of a generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation which has an additional fifth order derivative term are investigated on the basis of a numerical calculation. It is found that either compressive or rarefactive solitary waves are possible to exist according as the dispersion is negative or positive and that the solitary waves take the oscillatory structure when the coefficient of the fifth order derivative term dominates over that of the third order one.
