The decay of 15 minutes
65Ga to the level of
65Zn has been studied with the 35 cc Ge(Li) detector. The γ-rays of about forty energies have been observed. A decay scheme is proposed.

The
g-factor of the 3190 keV 6
+ state in
42Ca was measured by the time-differential perturbed-angular-distribution method in the
40Ca(α, 2
p)
42Ca reaction. The result is
g=−(0.50
−0.03+0.02). Assuming the 0.99f
7⁄22+0.13f
7⁄2f
5⁄2 configuration for the 6
+ state, the magnetic moment for the 0f
7⁄2 neutron is deduced to be −1.99μ
N, being very different from the known magnetic moment of the
41Ca ground state. The strong violation of the additivity relation is interpreted by a larger mixing of the core-excited deformed states into the
41Ca ground state. The above magnetic moment for the 0f
7⁄2 neutron supports recent proposal that the orbital
g-factor is enhanced in nuclei by around 0.1τ
z if the quenching due to the second-order core polarization is taken into account.

Elastic and inelastic scattering of 30.87 MeV alpha-particles from
92,94,96,98,100Mo nuclei were studied to determine relative values of β
L for the first 2
+ and 3
− states precisely. An optical model and DWBA analyses were made. Values of β
LR for the 2
+ and 3
− states are compared with those obtained by various reactions. The trend of variation of β
LR value with regard to
A agrees well for the 2
+ state among various but some differences are found for the 3
− state. Values of β
3⁄β
2 obtained by the present work are compared with those obtained by the inelastic proton scattering. It is found that the former are smaller than the latter as a whole.

The localization of electrons in structurally disordered lattice is investigated by following Anderson’s probabilistic approach. Based on the cell model, the strong dispersion of transfer energy due to fluctuations in the interatomic distance is transformed into the fluctuations in the molecular levels of the cells. The energy dependence of the critical value
W⁄
V for the electron localization is studied in the low energy tail in the spectrum of a cell system, with average intercell transfer energy
V, by considering the distribution with width
W of energies of only lowest bonding states of molecules. The critical value is found to decrease drastically with the decrease of distribution function of molecular levels. This behavior will confirm the conjecture that, in doped semiconductors, the electronic states are strongly localized in the tail of the impurity band or in the tailing region of the main band in heavily doped systems.

The parallel and perpendicular susceptibilities of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet below the Néel temperature are discussed on the basis of the spin wave approximation. It is shown through a new approach that an interplay between the external field and the spin wave interaction makes an important contribution of the order of 1⁄
S2 to the temperature dependence of each of the principal susceptibilities. In the case of the perpendicular susceptibility, the contribution is made by the fluctuation of the torque acting on a spin which is expressed in terms of the spin waves as a simultaneous (de-)excitation of three or more magnons. In the case of the parallel susceptibility, a frequency shift of the spin waves induced by the external field through the spin wave interaction is responsible for the contribution. Numerical calculations of the susceptibilities of MnF
2 are carried out on the bases of newly derived expressions in which the terms of the order of 1⁄
S2 are taken into account fully. The calculations in good agreement up to 2
TN⁄3 with the experimental data measured by Trapp and Stout. The terms of the order of 1⁄
S2 newly included are essential for the agreement above
TN⁄4.

Transport properties of polaron are investigated theoretically in the case of acoustic phonon coupling. Large polaron states with very little polarization cloud and small polaron states with large lattice distortion co-exist almost orthogonally to each other. Critical coupling strength at which the ground state changes from large to small polarons is smaller than the coupling strength at which the activated state for the hopping of small polaron becomes lower than the large polaron continuum. The polaron conduction changes successively among three types as the coupling strength increases. The first is the band conduction of large polaron with no activation energy, while the third is the thermally activated hopping of small polaron. In the intermediate type, thermally populated large polaron states play dominant role in the conduction while the small polaron is energetically stable. The drift mobility and the thermoelectric power are calculated for the three types. Optical absorption is also mentioned.

An improvement of the Feynman action is made by introducing two additional parameters to Feynman’s original theory of polaron. Better upper bounds to the polaron ground state energy than those of Feynman are obtained for α≤5 by the improved trial action. A general and exact theory for the spin wave impurity states associated with two substitutional ferromagnetic impurity spins in a Heisenberg ferromagnet with nearest neighbor exchange interactions only is developed at absolute zero temperature. All possible cases regarding the relative position of the two impurity spins are considered. It is found that the interference effect between the two impurity spins on the in-band spin wave impurity states in the one-dimensional case dose remain even for the infinitely large impurity separation, whereas the effect on the localized spin wave states in this case becomes vanishingly small as the impurity separation becomes large. A brief discussion concerning the interference effect on the spin wave impurity states in the two- and three-dimensional cases is also given.

The generalized spin susceptibility of isoelectronic and paramagnetic alloys is calculated by assuming the Wolff-Moriya model in the random phase approximation and in the coherent potential approximation. It is just an extension of Lederer and Mills’s result for one impurity system to concentrated alloys. A critical concentration at which ferromagnetism appears can be found from the divergence of the uniform static spin susceptibility of alloys. Uniform static spin susceptibilities of
Pd–Ni,
Pt–Ni and Pd–Pt alloys are numerically calculated by choosing appropriate values of intra-atomic Coulomb integrals on Pd, Pt and Ni atoms. The calculated results are compared with the experimental results. The estimated values of the intraatomic Coulomb integrals in these alloys are compared with each other.

An interpolation scheme for hcp transition metals is developed as an extension of Mueller’s method. The band structures of fcc and hcp Co are calculated by KKR with a suitable potential, and the parameters in the interpolation scheme are determined so as to give the best fit. It is found that Mueller’s scheme is well applicable to hcp Co. The density-of-states of Co is calculated and the topology of the Fermi surface of ferromagnetic Co is described. From the knowledge of the eigenvectors, the
g-factor, the orbital magnetic moment and the coefficient of the magnetic anisotropy are calculated.

Considering the memory effects at short and large time regions, a two step gaussian form for the memory function has been proposed. Using this memory function, the time-displayed properties of liquid argon at 85.5 K are calculated. The proposed memory function and the various time displayed properties show an exact agreement with the available computer results over the entire time region.

Elastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiments on K
2MnF
4 single crystal which is a typical two-dimensional antiferromagnet with Heisenberg exchange interaction, have been carried out. From the measurements of the temperature variation of magnetic Bragg intensities, existence of two types of the magnetic structure (K
2NiF
4-type and Ca
2MnO
4-type) with different Néel temperatures
TN (42.37±0.02 K and 58.0±0.5 K, respectively) has been confirmed. The temperature variation of sublattice magnetization has been determined from the (1, 0, 0) magnetic Bragg intensity. The results can be expressed by a simple power law for 4.2K<
T<
TN with β=0.188±0.01. After the quasi-elastic scattering measurements, two-dimensional spin correlation is found to be long-range over all the critical region. The diverging nature of the correlation length among intra-planar spins κ
−1 at
TN strongly suggests the two-dimensionality in this substance.

NMR study has been made on antiferromagnetic α-Mn metal at helium temperature in zero external field. NMR signal of Mn
55 from Site I appears at 199.4 MHz. The signal from Site II consists of two split lines and appears at 151.5 and 144.5 MHz. The signal from Site III has complicated structure and appears in the range from 20 to 35 MHz. The signal from Site IV appears at around 5 MHz. It is concluded that there are two types of magnetic moment on Site II. Except for this point, the results are consistent with the recent neutron diffraction study and support the non-collinear spin configuration. The appearance of two types of moment at Site II is discussed.

The photoluminescence of BaO powders has been studied at temperatures between 103 and 423 K. A luminescence band peaking at 2.92 eV is observed by exciting the samples with light in the region of exciton bands. A bimolecular decay process of this 2.92 eV luminescence is observed at room temperature. This process is interpreted in terms of the thermal dissociation of excitons.

Sγ holds extending over a very wide range of
S of 10
−1∼10
6V/cm·sec, γ being 0.22. The latter relation is explained theoretically. For BaTiO
3 and triglycine sulfate the former relation is a better approximation then the latter. A limiting value of coercive field has been shown to exist below which the spontaneous polarization would not reverse its direction, even when the field is applied for an extremely long time. This limiting value is about one hundredth of the coercive field obtained from the 50 c/s hysteresis loop.

Optical absorption and emission of the
FB centers were investigated for KCl, KBr and RbCl crystals heavily doped with sodium. A new emission band was discovered at 0.49 eV and 0.42 eV with narrow band-width in KCl and RbCl, respectively. By comparing the optical absorption energies as inferred from the excitation spectra with those predicted by Wong and Wang, the center responsible for the emission is considered to be a new type of the
FB center consisting of a triangular configuration of an
F center and two Na
+ ions. The emission behavior suggests that the emission may occur from the saddle point configuration as has as been proposed for the type I−
FA center by Lüty. The properties of
FC centers are also given briefly.

Thermal emission spectra measurements of thin films were made from 400 to 1100 cm
−1 for CaF
2 and from 400 to 1300 cm
−1 for MgO at emission angles ranging from 10° to 80° and at temperatures 470 K and 605 K. The observed emission peaks near the frequencies of long wavelength longitudinal optical (
LO) modes, which are a function of sample thickness and emission angle, are explained by the virtual mode theory. The upper branch of the polariton dispersion curve and the polariton lifetime were experimentally determined by analyzing the observed emission peaks due to the 0
TH virtual mode which is the lowest mode in high frequency region with respect to the
LO frequency. The linewidth of the polariton arising from the lattice anharmonicity was obtained by subtracting the width due to the radiation damping of 0
TH mode from the observed width. The results agree fairly well with the theoretical curve of the damped polariton.

The precise temperature dependence of the proton spin-lattice relaxation time
T1 is observed in the vicinity of the transition temperature of dicalcium lead propionate (Ca
2Pb(C
2H
5COO)
6). Measurements are carried out by using 90°-t-90° pulse method and the boxcar integrator is used to reduce an experimental error of
T1. The anomalous part of
T1−1, (
T1−1)
fluc, seems to display a logarithmic divergence at the transition temperature
Tc. The interpretation of the anomalous (
T1−1)
fluc is formulated in terms of the time dependent correlation functions in the order-disorder phase transition system described by the Ising operators, and the relation to the recent theory of the critical phenomena is shown. Some possible interpretations of this divergence are discussed.

The phase transition of NaNO
3 crystal associated with the ordering of the orientation of NO
3− ion has been investigated by X-ray scattering. The experimental results have been analyzed on a microscopic basis to obtain pair interactions between NO
3− ions. The results are summarized as follows.
(i) The ellipsoidal distribution of critical diffuse scattering in the reciprocal space is explained by taking the pair interactions up to second nearest neighbours.
(ii) The temperature dependence of critical scattering gives a reasonable agreement with theoretical values in random phase approximation in the temperature range of
T>
Tc+4.5 K.
(iii) Both the temperature dependence of long range order parameter and of anomalous lattice expansion can be satisfactorily explained by taking the strain dependence of pair interaction energy into account.

The
Kβ emission and
K absorption spectra of chlorine in MnCl
2, FeCl
2, CoCl
2 and NiCl
2 have been obtained with a 50 cm bent quartz crystal vacuum spectrograph. The
Kβ emission bands are very wide. The shapes of the
Kβ emission bands and of the
K absorption bands are alike among different chlorides. The first absorption peak shifts to low energy side systematically from MnCl
2 to NiCl
2. The similarity of the observed spectra seems to suggest that the energy band structures of these chlorides are alike. Discussion is made about the first peak in the
K absorption spectra on the basis of the comparison with the Cl
− L2,3 absorption spectra.

The abnormal absorption coefficient and the Kikuchi band by the core electron excitations are calculated in detail for Si and Al by considering the exchange effect in the inelastic scattering factor
S(
qh,
q). It is shown that the exchange term plays an important role in the calculation, and that the abnormal absorption coeffcient becomes negative for higher indexes. The negative region of the Kikuchi band is enlarged by the exchange terms. The calculated abnormal absorption coefficients for Si and Al are very small compared with results of Radi and Whelan.

Cross sections differential in angle and energy have been measured of secondary electrons resulting from ionizing collisions of electrons with helium at the primary energy
E0=500 eV and 1 keV and with krypton at
E0=1 keV. The total spectra, consisting of the continuum spectra due to direct ionizations and the sharp line spectra due to indirect ionizations (autoionizations or Auger processes), have been measured with an energy resolution of about 0.2 eV over the angular range from 10° to 130°. The continuum spectra are derived from the total spectra for electron energies from 25 eV to 45 eV for helium and from 24 eV to 52 eV for krypton and compared with the calculations by the binary encounter theory.

The suitability of a recently suggested method for the inversion from the energy dependence of total cross-section data at high energies has been critically examined by considering He–He system. For this purpose, the data had to be generated partially by theoretical calculations. The results of the analysis show that the method has excellent potentialities, provided the required experimental data are available. Some suggestions for performing such experiments have been given.

Spectroscopic investigations were made of the rotational population distribution of OH(
A2Σ
+, υ′=0) split from H
2O by a steady-state flowing argon afterglow at the pressures from 0.022 up to 12 Torr. In order to observe the distribution close to the
initial rotational population distribution free from collisional deactivation, an improved apparatus was constructed and a flowing afterglow was obtained at the pressures of one order of magnitude lower than in the other works. The observed distribution can be expressed by a combination of two thermal population distributions. Effects of pressure on the distribution were examined and the rate constant for collisional rotational relaxation in
A2Σ
+, υ′=0 was obtained as (7.9±3.5)×10
−12 cm
3 mol sec
−1 for Ar. Mechanisms responsible for rotational excitation are discussed.

The spontaneous Cerenkov emission of longitudinal waves in a plasma with small but finite amplitude wave (hereafter referred as the carrier wave) is investigated. Two effects of the carrier wave are taken into account; one is the modification of the test-particle orbit and the other that of the dielectric character of the plasma. It is shown that particles trapped in the potential-energy troughs of the carrier wave emit a discrete spectrum of sideband waves (in addition to the carrier wave itself) whose frequencies are different from the carrier-wave frequency by approximately integral multiples of the bounce frequency. An untrapped particle also emits waves at several different frequencies, including the one which satisfies the ordinary Cerenkov condition, but these frequencies depend on the particle velocity. The results are compared with those reported in our previous paper where only the effect of the orbit modification is taken into consideration.

The behavior of a plasma current through a magnetic neutral point is investigated experimentally. A quasi-steady magnetic field (either cusp or quadrupole magnetic field) is created by a slow capacitor discharge, and the plasma sheet current is excited by a slow capacitor discharge. The plasma current sheet thus formed is collapsed into small filamentary pinches, and they are ejected outward on the current sheet plane along the magnetic field lines. This seems to correspond to the ejection of plasma and energetic particles associated with solar flares. The visual observation together with double probe and Rogowski coil measurements shows that the collapse of the plasma current occurs earlier as the plasma current and the external magnetic field is increased and as the initial gas pressure is decreased, and this is explained qualitatively by the resistive tearing mode instability.

Propagation characteristics of nonlocal drift waves in a cylindrical plasma are investigated on the basis of two-fluid model composed of cold ions and warm electrons. An equation is derived for describing the radial behavior of the wave amplitude. The dispersion relation is obtained from solutions of an eigenvalue problem, and the latter is proved to have a unique solution if the radial density is moderate and the mode numbers are prescribed. The eigenvalue problem is solved numerically for a density profile of a Gaussian type, for which the drift frequency ω
* can be defined unambiguously. It is found that the dispersion relation obtained in the conventional slab approximation is a good approximation to the one of a cylindrical plasma, provided that the drift frequency ω
* is much smaller than the ion cyclotron frequency.

The stability of a horizontal layer of a viscoelastic fluid (Oldroyd fluid) heated from below is considered. Linear stability theory is used to derive an eigenvalue equation system of sixth order. Consideration is given to the two cases (
a) both bounding surfaces free and (
b) both bounding surfaces rigid, the former being solved exactly and the latter approximately by the Galerkin method. Tables of the various critical values for the onset of instability are provided for various assigned values of parameters. It is shown that the principle of exchange of stabilities does not hold for moderately elastic fluids; and that the critical Rayleigh number is lowered by the presence of a stress relaxation time and raised by the presence of a strain retardation time.

On the basis of the “small-signal power theorem”, a “small-signal momentum theorem” is derived for the linearized electromagnetic fields in electron streams in the presence of a static magnetic field. Expressions for the field momentum, the stress tensor and the momentum dissipation of the linearized electromagnetic fields are obtained. It is proved for a quasi-monochromatic wave that the small-signal momentum (or power) theorem can be reduced to the momentum (or energy) conservation law formulated phenomenologically in terms of a reduced permittivity tensor. From this, it is found that the quasi-particles introduced from the phenomenological expression for the field energy have the momentum (or energy) density given by the “small-signal momentum (or power) theorem”.

The stability of a horizontal fluid layer with an internal heat source is considered using linear stability theory for the case of buoyancy and surface tension driven flow. As compared with the corresponding linear temperature case, it is found that the quadratic temperature profile makes the layer less stable and the cells appearing at marginal stability narrower.

A general asymptotic theory of a radiating gas which has been developed by the same author is applied to the flow past a semi-infinite flat plate at a constant temperature. It is assumed that the global optical thickness of the gas is large and that the convective heat in the flow is of the same order of magnitude as the radiative one. The gas is assumed to have constant properties. The general theory shows that the flow field is composed of an isentropic outer region, a diffusive (Rosseland type) middle layer and a radiative inner layer. It is also shown that the solutions in the inner layer are described by linear combinations as coefficients. Similar solutions of universal functions by using specific values of the middle layer solutions are numerically obtained in the middle layer by making a boundary layer treatment. Solutions in the outer region are obtained for a subsonic flow. Actual analyses are carried out up to the first two orders of expansion with respect to the inverse square root of the global optical thickness.

The simple relation between the change of orbital
g-factors due to exchange currents and the sum rule for E1 photoabsorption which was recently proposed on the basis of the Fermi gas model is reexamined from the viewpoint of the shell model for several examples. In the course of the study, foundation of the conventional theories on nuclear moments is discussed from a more general viewpoint.

The resistive behavior of the mixed state is studied theoretically in nonideal type II superconductors containing many defects. The fundamental equations in this paper are the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations generalized from the conventional ones so as to describe elastic interactions of flux-lines with defects. The solutions are obtained for the case of weak and localized defects by perturbation calculations in the vicinity of the upper critical field. It is shown that the flux-line lattice in nonideal samples can carry a finite amount of nondissipative transport current, which leads to the appearance of the depinning current term in the relation of the induced electric field to the transport current. A detailed expression of the critical current density is derived for a simple type of defects. An expression of the flow conductivity is shown to be also modified by the presence of defects.
