Gamma-gamma directional correlation studies have been carried out for 740–181, 740–(41)–140, 140–41 and 740–41 keV cascades in 99Tc observed in the radioactive decay of 99Mo. These investigations confirm 3/2+ spin assignment for 921 keV level. The mixing ratios of 740, 140 and 41 keV gamma rays are found to be predominantly E2+<1%M1, 95%M1+(5±1)%E2 and predominantly M1+(0.7−0.4+0.5)%E2 respectively.

The measurements were made at angles of the center of mass extending from 14° to 128° or 172°. The yield of inelastic scattering at most angles was of the same order in the elastic scattering. A Thomas type spin-orbit coupling of the optical potential is useful for the elastic scattering at backward angles. Discrete and continuous ambiguities in the optical model parameters appeared in the analysis.
The experimental values of inelastic scattering were predicted fairly well by the DWBA theory, and the deformation parameters β2 were about 0.5. In the coupled channel analysis, the predicted values of elastic scattering were much different from the results of optical model analyses by coupling to the inelastic channel, and the potential whose imaginary part was shallower than that given by the optical model analysis gave better fit. The value of β must be −0.5 for 39.6 and 34.7 MeV.

The total absorption cross sections of photons in copper, silver, tin, tantalum, tungsten and lead have been studied for photon energies at 450, 700 and 1000 MeV. A comparison is made between experimental and theoretical cross sections. The Hartree-Fock-Slater cross section agrees with experimental results with an accuracy of the order of 1%.

Jahn-Teller effects in 4T1g+4T1g excited ion pair in RbMnF3 are studied under the assumption of the A1g- and Eg-distortion. General expressions of the Jahn-Teller energy and the exciton-exciton interaction energy due to the lattice distortions are derived and examined in detail by using a simple lattice model.
A positive large value of the exciton-exciton interaction energy is obtained for the lowest energy two-exciton state for certain mixing ratio of the two types of distortions, though it seems difficult at present to explain the large value observed experimentally (S. E. Stokowski, D. D. Sell and H. J. Guggenheim: Phys. Rev. B4 (1971) 3141) by the simple model adopted here.
The shape and the peak position of the two-exciton phonon sideband are discussed briefly.

To investigate the effects of electron correlation in narrow energy bands, a general formula of static spin susceptibility for interacting electron systems is derived. It is expressed in terms of the one-particle Green’s function and its derivative with respect to the average number of the opposite spin electrons, the existence of the latter being the characteristic of electron correlation. The formula is applied to the case of Hubbard’s improved approximation (Hubbard III), and gross feature of both the correlation and temperature dependences of the susceptibility is investigated in the insulating and metallic regions. The correlation in the metallic region is reduced for the Hubbard III case so that there occurs no ferromagnetism in a half-filled band.

A simple expression for the magnetoresistance of the antiferromagnetic metals due to the electron-spin scattering by the s-d interaction is obtained using the molecular field approximation for the spin system. The expression includes the ferromagnetic case. It is shown that in the antiferromagnetic case the positive magnetoresistance appears below the transition point, in contrast to the negative-magnetoresistance in the case of the para or ferromagnetic case. In the ferromagnetic case the negative magnetoresistance shows a deep and finite valley at the transition point, which is consistant with the experiments of the ferromagnetic rare-earth metals such as Gd and Tb.

Below the Néel point (105 K), magnetic superstructure lines corresponding to the triangular spin arrangement in the basal plane of hexagonal lattice are observed. The temperature dependence of the intensity of the magnetic superstructure lines was studied in the temperature range from 10 K to 117 K, and the temperature dependence of the Fe atomic moment can be fitted to the Brillouin function of spin 1/2. The moment of the normal site Fe atom is estimated to be 0.88±0.05μB at 10 K.

Measurements of hyperfine field and quadrupole coupling of Co59 have been made on the intermetallic compound Co2B. A large anisotropy in the hyperfine field is observed. The hyperfine fields along the local orthorhombic axes (x, y, and z) of the Co sites are −53.7 kOe, −83.1 kOe, and −123.6 kOe, respectively, where the z axis is the two-fold axis which lies along the tetragonal ⟨110⟩ direction. The electric field gradients, |qxx|, |qyy|, and |qzz|, are 1.43×1024 cm−3, 0.08×1024 cm−3, and 1.47×1024 cm−3, respectively. The charge distribution compatible with the observed electric field gradients suggests that the electronic states near the top of the band have a character of ψ=α(3z2r2)+β(x2y2).

The optical absorption spectra of HgCr2Se4 single crystals in the intrinsic transition region were measured as a function of magnetic field at a number of fixed temperatures. The absorption edge, 0.80 eV, at room temperature shifted to 0.27 eV at liquid helium temperature. The temperature dependence of the absorption edge was nonlinear and remarkable around the Curie temperature. The absorption edge also shifts to the lower energy side with the increasing magnetic field. The field dependence of the edge shift in weaker magnetic field was larger at the Curie temperature than it in the higher temperature region. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the absorption edge was compared to a calculated spin correlation function in spinels with the nearest neighbour exchange interaction between localized Cr+3 ions. Other kind of exchange interaction would be required to explain the temperature dependence of the absorption edge.

A model is proposed for the transfer of magnetic excitations between antiparallel spin sites. Formulation is made for the 4A2g2Eg transition of Cr3+(dε3) ions in antiferromagnetic crystals. Since the spin component is not conserved in the transfer, the mechanism is attributed to the second order effect of the spin-orbit interaction similar to the anisotropic super-exchange interaction derived by Moriya. It is shown that the model gives the correct order of magnitude for the transfer matrix elements. Unfortunately, angular dependence of the transfer matrix elements characteristic to the present model does not agree with the experimental results obtained so far.

The E0+Δ0, E1, E1+Δ1 and E0′ transitions were investigated as a function of alloy composition. The transition energies at critical points show quadratic dependence on the alloy composition. The deviations from linearity are interpreted by using the dielectric two band method. The spin-orbit splitting Δ0 at k=0 for HgTe was measured directly as 1.08±0.02 eV at room temperature.

A high resolution magneto-optical study is made on Cu2O in the yellow exciton (n≥3) and oscillatory region of the spectrum at magnetic fields up to 160 kOe. The shift and splitting of each exciton line observed in the presence of the field are explained primarily in terms of diamagnetic effects on the odd parity levels of a free hydrogen atom. The degeneracy of the p and f levels with same n is lifted in the absence of the field. The magneto-oscillatory spectrum consists of broad main lines accompanied with sharp lines on the higher energy side, which arise from the relative motion within an electron-hole pair. The reduced effective mass for this motion is obtained from the magneto-oscillatory spectrum as 0.38 m. The effective g value for the diamagnetic effect is 0.73 in the exciton as well as in the oscillatory region.

Positron lifetime measurements have been performed in plastically bent n-type GaAs single crystals in which either Ga- or As-dislocations were introduced. τ1 and I1 were decreased by deformation, while I2 was increased. Following the trapping model, the trapping rates were deduced experimentally, which in turn gave the cross widths of the Ga- and As-dislocations as 2.2×102Å and 2.9×102Å, respectively. In terms of Read’s model for the electric charge of the dislocation in semiconductors, the fractions of the dangling bonds occupied by electrons for the Ga- and As-dislocation were obtained as 0.65 and 0.75, respectively.

The optical spectrum of a hydrogen-like exciton in a static uniform magnetic field is studied theoretically on the basis of the adiabatic approximation as a sequel of our series of study. The emphasis of this paper is put on the isotropic excitons rather than anisotropic ones. In §1 and §2 the formulations are given for the hydrogen-like excitons in the magnetic field and the adiabatic approximation, respectively. The results of the calculation are given for the adiabatic potentials, energy levels and optical absorption intensities for m=0 and |m|=1 states for some lower values of n. A way of overcoming the adiabatic approximation will be suggested on the basis of Born’s method. It may, however, be difficult to carry out the calculation and the problem is left untouched. Direct comparison with experiment will not be tried in this paper. A qualitative comparison was attempted in another paper.

It has been observed that it can be applied only to spherical molecules having single relaxation time and with the small value of the optical dielectric constant slope. An improved equation gives the value of the relaxation time in agreement to those obtained by using conventional Cole-Cole plot. The latter method, also applicable only to spherical molecules, uses the measurements of dielectric constant and dielectric loss at a single microwave frequency in conjugation with the optical dielectric constant value of different dilute solutions.

An ambiguity in choice of signs of effective nonlinear coefficients measured leads to four sets of tensor components and |d16|=|d21|=(0.174±0.049)d36(KDP) and |d23|=|d34|=(3.367±0.012)d36(KDP) are chosen on the basis of the Miller law. The nonlinear polarizability of a nitrite ion was found to be |β16(NO2)|=|β21(NO2)|=(0.39±0.11)·10−23 cm3d36(KDP), |β23(NO2)|=|β34(NO2)|=(6.40±0.23)·10−23 cm3d36(KDP), and |β22(NO2)|=(0.56±0.14)·10−23 cm3d36(KDP). As the result, it has been found that cross sections for singly electron loss of those energetic heavy ions agree nearly with a formula given by N. Bohr and generalized by I.S. Dmitriev who derived the formula for electron loss in a free collision approximation through a classical treatment, and that from the relation between the electron loss cross sections and the atomic number of gaseous medium Zmed, the shielding effect of target gas was observed obviously in the region of Zmed\gtrsim10. Cross sections for electron capture could not fit to previous theories, but agreed well with the calculation derived by Urata and Watanabe recently using an impulse approximation.

Previous calculations on the π-electron system in retinal are refined in a more rigorous way. Firstly, the σ-π interaction indispensable to derive the bond alternation is semiempirically determined from the first principle. Secondly, the effect of a sufficient number of singly- and doubly-excited configurations are examined in CI calculation.
It is thus confirmed again that the wavelength of optical absorption maximum of retinal forming protonated Schiff-base binding is about 200 nm longer than that of retinal forming normal Schiff-base binding. The concept of partially-protonated Schiff-base binding of retinal, which is a phenomenological description of the previous theory for the interaction of retinal with opsin, is also formulated by introducing the degree (x) of protonation, and the x-dependences of the wavelengths and oscillator strengths of optical absorption are calculated.

Transverse diffusion coefficients in a toroidal pinch are investigated for three regions of collision frequencies. The configuration of a toroidal pinch is characterized by a large poloidal magnetic field BP comparable to a toroidal magnetic field BT.
We calculated diffusion coefficients following the scheme of Galeev and Sagdeev.
In a toroidal pinch particles can be trapped in a local magnetic mirror formed by both a toroidal magnetic field and a poloidal magnetic field. Furthermore BP\simeqBT reduces the connection length of a toroidal pinch. Transverse diffusion coefficients including these effects are shown to be smaller than DGS which is given by Galeev and Sagdeev. in the banana region D\simeqDGS\sqrtδ⁄ε is obtained and in the plateau region D\simeqDGS2⁄ε2), where ε denotes an aspect ratio and a small parameter δ denotes the inhomogeneity of the toroidal magnetic field in the toroidal pinch. Here it is noted that a safety factor included in D may be smaller than or comparable to unity. In the MHD region D also includes a factor δ⁄ε.

The magnetic field is formed by the combination of a mirror field and an octopole field produced by using internal conductors. Plasmas, produced either by microwave heating or by a rail gun, are stably confined with the confinement time of about 0.9 ms. Measurements of particle loss show that half of the plasma is lost in the radial direction and another half is lost to the ends. Fluctuations are observed near the boundary of the plasma but they do not appear to be an important source of the plasma loss.

The spatially periodic energy transfer among the satellite modes and the primary mode is observed, which results in an enhanced damping of the stable primary mode in the former case and a decrease in a growth rate of the unstable primary mode in the latter. Amplification of radio-frequency wave, which results from the negative absorption due to stimulated cyclotron radiation, is verified in weakly ionized mercury plasma. It does not occur continuously but does pulsively at certain phase of an lf oscillations present in the dc plasma, and its maximum power gain at the electron cyclotron frequency is estimated to be over 5 dB from experimental result. Time-analyzed probe measurement shows that the excess of electrons is found in the energy region where the elastic collision cross section of electron with neutral atoms increases sharply with increasing electron energy, which is a necessary condition of negative absorption shown in theoretical consideration. If the parameters of plasma generation are adjusted to suitable values, the large emission pulse is observed synchronizing with some phases of the lf oscillations, which are considered to be self-excited in the plasma. Various features of this phenomenon are compared with those of Xe, Kr and Ar plasmas.

LTE and CE are treated on the basis of the collisional-radiative model for hydrogenic ion in plasma. Approximate forms of the coefficients of the quasi-steady state solution in the model lead to validity criteria as well as their numerical expressions for the equilibria. A set of criteria for partial LTE are derived which consists of those proposed by Griem and by Byron et al. and of the ones concerning the state of ionization. The criterion for complete LTE is identical with that by Griem. Two criteria for CE are obtained which reduce to those proposed by Wilson and by McWhirter. Effect of radiation trapping of Lyman lines is estimated, and it is shown that the criteria for partial LTE are little relaxed but that for complete LTE is much affected for TeZ2\lesssim1×104 K.

Unsteady aspects of incompressible flows at a three-dimensional stagnation point of attachment on a general curved surface of a body are described. The velocity of the external stream towards the body is assumed to be kept constant in time t after its impulsive start from rest at t=0. The derived fundamental equations by using the boundary layer approximation are found to be non-similar and an attempt to solve them in a numerical scheme is made by employing the difference-differential method. Numerical solutions for various values of a parameter which characterizes the present problem are given for the velocity profile and skin friction and these numerical solutions are used to discuss the development of the boundary layer, the onset of reverse flow and the unsteady behaviour of skin friction.

The steady flow of a non-equilibrium ionized gas with an infinite magnetic Reynolds number past an insulated wall with sharp corners, in the presence of a crossed applied magnetic field, is studied in the linearized approximation.
The speed of the flow is assumed to be larger than that of the fast magnetohydrodynamic wave, and then the fundamental equation becomes purely hyperbolic, while the magnetic field in the wall is governed by the Laplace equation. Since the magnetic field should be continuous on the surface of the wall, disturbances propagate upstream of the first corner through the wall, and there is no uniform region in the flow field. In this case, the Laplace transform cannot be used and the Fourier transform is adopted.

The motions of a vortex tube with an elliptic cross section and of a vortex sheet of finite length in an inviscid, incompressible fluid are simulated by a number of discrete vortex filaments, each vortex moving under the action of the velocity field of all the other vortices. By the use of this simulation, rotation of the vortex tube and rolling-up of the vortex sheet are investigated numerically as initial value problems. Comparison with exact solutions shows the validity of this method of approximation. In order to improve the results, an artificial viscosity is introduced to the equations of motion. This diminishes randomization of vortices inherent to the treatment without viscosity and thus leads to regular rolling-up of a vortex sheet.

The velocity profiles of the boundary layer in the laminar inlet flow are calculated numerically. The boundary layer equation is simplified assuming similarity of the velocity profiles in a weak sense and this equation is integrated numerically at various cross-sections corresponding to δ=0, 0.01, ···, 0.16, where δ denotes the displacement thickness. The calculation is not extended beyond δ=0.16 since the inviscid core disappears at this point. The relation of δ with the axial distance z is obtained from the continuity of flux, and thus the profiles of the axial velocity u at various cross-sections are obtained as functions of the radial distance r. Finally the error due to the assumption of weak similarity is estimated.
