The β
+ decay of
81Sr to the levels of
81Rb has been investigated with high resolution Ge(Li) detectors. The half-lives of
81Sr and
81mRb were determined to be 22.15±0.22 and 30.59±0.28 min, resrectively. Energies and relative intensities of 80 gamma rays associated with
81Sr decay were measured precisely and 30 of them are new gamma rays. The level scheme of
81Rb was constructed by applying the Ritz rule and the intensity balance. Seventy three gamma rays were incorporated into the level scheme including eleven new levels at 245.29, 463.02, 486.69, 630.58, 711.93, 923.04, 1243.64, 1513.13, 1804.41, 1848.47 and 2165.53 keV. The possible spin-parities of
81Rb levels are proposed considering log
ft values and gamma-ray branching ratios. The level at 245.29 keV is assigned as the anomalous 5/2
+ state.

The β
− decay of
76As to
76Se has been studied extensiveIy. The energies and relative intensities of 56 gamma rays have been measured with a high precision. Six new gamma rays have been observed with energies 776.5, 852.8, 857.0, 957.6, 1060.6 and 1881.3 keV in the decay of
76As. Out of these, gamma rays with 852.8, 957.6, 1060.6 and 1881.3 keV energies have been placed in the decay scheme. Gamma rays with energies 863.9 and 1564.3 keV reported earlier but not placed in the decay scheme have been confirmed and fitted in the present decay scheme. Spin assignments of 1
− and 2
− have been made to the levels at 2655.31 and 2669.80 keV on the basis of gamma-gamma angular correlation measurenaents. Also, the multipole admixtures in 657, 1228, 1439, 2096 and 2111 keV transitions have been evaluated.

The level structure of
82Kr, from the decay of 35.3 h
82Br, has been investigated using a 64.1 cc Ge(Li) detector (FWHM≈2.1 keV at 1.33 MeV) in singles mode and Ge(Li)–NaI(Tl) (64.1 cc and 3″×3″ respectively) detector set-up in coincidence mode (2τ=6 nsec). These measurements confirmed the existence of 129.22, 180.5, 280.8, 332.5, 470.28, 735.7, 1 173.3, 1427.2 and 1871.7 keV weak gamma ray transitions, while the 345.65, 599.5, 625.5, 692.7, 726.8 and 932.1 keV gamma rays reported earlier, could not be observed.
The gamma-gamma directional correlation measurements have been done on 15 cascades, out of which the 221–(606)–1044, 273–1014, 606–1044 and 221–1650 keV cascades have been attempted for the first time. Based on these measurements, the spin 3
+ has been confirmed for the 2426.79 keV level in
82Kr. Also the multipole admixtures in the 221.34, 273.45, 606.30, 619.07, 698.32, 827.81, 1007.57, 1043.98, 1317.46 and 1650.28 keV gamma transitions have been evaluated.

The isothermal Anderson-Grüneisen parameter δ
T has been studied with the help of interaction approach. The necessary equation for δ
T has been derived interms of various lattice properties and tested for some cubic crystals, on the basis of wellknown Born, Lennard-Jones (12 : 6) and modified Varshni-Shukla potential energy functions. The potential parameters of these models have been calculated employing the lattice equilibrium conditions at hydrostatic pressure instead of the generally utilised equilibrium lattice conditions at atmospheric pressure (
p=0). The results have been discussed in detail and it is inferred that the computed values of δ
T, except for the Lennard-Jones function, are quite satisfactory with the experimental values keeping in view the limitations involved in the present treatment, which is obviously based on the least possible approximations.

Lieb’s type II excitation, derived exactly by means of a Bethe ansatz, in a one-dimensional Bose system with the repulsive delta-function interaction is identified with the soliton mode, which is a solution of the Pitaevskii-Gross (or nonlinear Schrödinger) equation for the corresponding Bose field.

The linear response theory of the one dimensional nonlinear system, developed in I, is generalized to apply to a system with an
arbitrary damping strength. In stead of the Smoluchowsky equation, the Fokker Planck equation is investigated. The transfer integral method is again applicable with a simple decoupling approximation. The dynamical structure factor for the φ
4 chain is found to be the sum of
phonon peaks and
a sharp central peak. As the damping strength reduces,
the phonon peak becomes underdamped, while the structure of the cetatral peak is essentially the same as the strong damping case. The origin of the central peak is due to the response of the domain wall.

The one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with the Kroning-Penny potential plus the electric-field potential eFx has been solved numerically. All the interband effects are included in the exact numerical calculation. Although an infinite crystal was considered, localized wave functions have been obtaind at energies which make a Stark ladder. One Stark ladder is associated with one band. When the probability of the Zener tunneling to the next band is appreciable for given values of parameters, the wave function necessarily penetrates into the region of the next band and is not localized.

The memory function for the velocity autocorrelation function in a strongly coupled, one-component plasma is analyzed in the short time and long time domains, respectively, with the aid of the frequency-moment sum rules and the hydrodynamic consideration evoking the idea of the generalized Stokes friction. A series of interpolation schemes with successively improved accuracies are then introduced. Numerical investigations of those interpolation schemes clarify the physical origin of the three different types of the velocity autocorrelation function observed in the molecular dynamics simulation at different regimes of the coupling constant.

By solving the gap equation numerically from the first principles, we have investigated the mechanism of superconductivity in
n-type seumiconducting SrTiO
3. The observed transition temperature as a function of the carrier density and the applied stress is reproduced quite well, when we take account of the plasmon and the polar optic phonon which relates to the stress-induced ferroelectric transition. In the calculation, the conduction band of SrTiO
3 is assumed to be the single-valley model proposed by Mattheiss and all the physical quantities such as the effective mass, the dielectric constant and the phonon dispersion relation are taken to be the values measured by experiments, so that there are no adjustable parameters in the theory. The effect of other phonons like the acoustic one is also evaluated and found to be small.

The nonlinear susceptibilities of a spin glass compound (Ti
1−xV
x)
2O
3 (
x=0.04, 0.10) have been measured by an ac mutual inductance bridge. The third and fifth nonlinear susceptibilities, which are observed as the third and fifth higher harmonics of the applied field, show the very sharp peak in the vicinity of the spin glass ordering temperature
Tg, and increase logarithmically near
Tg as the temperature approaches to
Tg. These results are compared with the theories which indicate the cooperative freezing of spins.

Magnetic properties of an antiferromagnet KCoF
3 having residual orbital moments are studied on the basis of the dynamical correlated effective field approximation developed by Suzuki. A value of the Néel temperature which shows excellent agreement with the experiment is obtained. The calculated parallel and perpendicular susceptibilities in the ordered phase and the calculated paramagnetic susceptibility are also in good agreement with the observed results with regard to both the magnitude and the temperature dependence.

Detailed measurements of the electron spin-lattice relaxation time
T1 of Fe
3+ ion in rutile were carried out from 1.7 K up to 30 K by the pulse saturation recovery method. It was found that below ∼15 K the relaxation was mainly due to the direct process, while above ∼15 K the Raman process dominated. The temperature dependence of the direct relaxation rate was found to be dependent on the kind of transition. At 4.2 K, the anisotropy of the direct relaxation rate was clearly observed. In order to explain these experimental results, computation of
T1 using magnetoelastic coupling tensor (
G tensor), in which the elastic anisotropy of the lattice was taken into account, was carried out and the coupling of Fe
3+ ion with lattice strain is discussed. For the Raman process, the relaxation rate was found to be proportional to
T7 and the anisotropy of a factor of around 3 was observed.

Neutron diffraction experiment has been done on a randomly mixed antiferromagnet with competing spin anisotropies, Fe
(1−x)Co
xCl
2. Front the experiment the spin structures in the three ordered phases which appear in the concentration versus transition temperature phase diagram, namely, the Fe-rich and Co-rich antiferromagnetic phases and the new phase are determined. The spin structure in the Fe-rich (Co-rich) phase is essentially identical with that of pure FeCl
2 (CoCl
2). In the new phase, although overall spin structure is the same as those of the pure materials, both of the two spin components are observed which are associated with competing anisotropies. The new phase is an OAF phase in the sense that an inclination of the sublattice magnetizations both from the easy axes of the pure substances means the simultaneous ordering of the spin components. The temperature dependences, of the spin components are discussed in favour of the result of the renormalization group theory.

The amorphyzation of a crystalline layered ferro- and antiferromagnet with randomly distributed interlayer exchange parameters is investigated by the use of newly developed effective field theory. Two typical amorphizations of interlayer exchange parameters are studied. The phase diagrams are obtained. The analytical behaviours of magnetization near the spin glass phase boundary at
T=0 are studied in details for each case. We find that the order of transition from the ferromagnetic phase to the spin glass phase depends on the distribution function of interlayer exchange parameters.

Measurements of magnetization and susceptibility were made on the hexagonal (Cr
1−xNi
x)
2As single crystal compounds. The compounds were antiferromagnetic for 0.4<
x≤0.45 and ferromagnetic for 0.45<
x≤0.7. The concentration dependences of the magnetic transition temperature, the saturation magnetization and the second order anisotropy constant at 4.2 K show maxima of 188 K (
Tc), 1.19 μ
B per formula unit and 1.46×10
6 erg/cm
3 at
x=0.5, respectively. The Curie constant is independent of
x for 0.375≤
x≤0.5, while it decreases with increasing
x for
x>0.5. The magnetization curves in the antiferromagnetic compounds at 4.2 K have relatively low critical fields. The compound of
x=0.425 shows an unusual magnetization curve. The results were briefly discussed on the basis of the theory of spin fluctuations.

Dielectric constant and the initial permeability of Fe
3O
4 have been measured from 4.2 K to room temperature. Magnetic and dielectric relaxations were observed in the temperature range of 30 to 60 K. These relaxations were considered to be caused by the transfer of electron between ferrous and ferric ions. The magnetic permeability showed a peak at the Verwey transition temperature
Tv in Fe
3O
4 sintered samples. Magnetic loss showed an anomalous rise at
Tv. The magnetization at the field of 8.3 kOe also showed a rise at
Tv. This anomalous magnetic behavior is considered to be caused by the change of easy axis of magnetization at
Tv.

Magnetic short-range order was observed in one-dimensional
S=1 Heisenberg (CsNiCl
3, RbNiCl

J|, respectively, by measuring optical birefringences. An isomorphic diamagnet CsMgCl
3 was used, with corresponding states argument, to extract the magnetic contribution
Δnm from the resultant birefringence
Δn in these magnetic systems. The temperature
Tmax, at which the temperature derivative of the magnetic part
Δnm displays a broad maximum, is in agreement with that predicted by the rigorous theory for the specific heat in each linear chain system.

To elucidate the dynamical mechanism of the β
1 to ζ transition the elastic constants of metastable β
1 phase of Ag–Zn alloys containing 46.5 and 48.5 at.% Zn are measured in the range between room temperature and the β
1 to ζ transition temperature using an ultrasonic pulse-echo overlapping method.
The elastic constants C
L[110]=(C
11+C
12+2C
44)⁄2 and C
44 decrease linearly with increasing temperature up to 340 K and then fall more rapidly on further heating. On the other hand, C
11 decreases linearly on heating up to 340 K and then increases at higher temperatures. Furthermore, C
L[111]=(C
11+2C
12+4C
44)⁄3 which is mainly related to the β
1 to ζ transition mechanism decreases rapidly above 340 K. These elastic constants show a characteristic temperature hysteresis with heating and cooling. Based on the obtained results, we discuss the transition mechanism and stability of the β
1 phase.

The electrical resistivity of aluminum strips has been measured for various thickness (0.02–1.48 mm) and over a temperature (1.5–60 K). The results show the deviation from Matthiessen’s rule (DMR)
Δs(
T) on the surface scattering. The surface reflection parameter
p is determined to be nearly zero from the temperature at which the maximum of
Δs(
T) appears. The DMR
Δs(
T) shows different profiles from DMR on the impurity scattering. The comparison of the present data with Husstad-Lothe theory shows that the effect of small angle electron-phonon scattering is small on the surface scattering. The present experiments can be explained by a term of the surface resistivity ρ
s(
T) (=ρ
s(0)+
Δs(
T)) deduced from Fuchs-Sondheimer theory. It is thus concluded that DMR
Δs(
T) mainly arises from the spatial variation of the electron distribution function.

The density of upper valence band states (U-DOVS) of amorphous As
xSe
100−x in the compositional region of 0≤
x≤50 was investigated with ultraviolet photoelectric emission spectroscopy. The U-DOVSs in the regions of 0≤
x≤40 and 40≤
x≤50 are well described by U-DOVSs synthesized from those of properly weighted Se and As
2Se
3, and As
2Se
3 and As
4Se
4, respectively. These facts show that the hetero-bonding is predominant compared with the homo-bonding, and the dominant structure of U-DOVS is determined from the structure of the first nearest neighbour atoms.

We calculate the rates of non-radiative transitions among the excited states of the self-trapped exciton in KCl. The transition matrix elements are calculated using the same semi-empirical molecular orbital method (CNDO) as in our earlier calculations of the energy surfaces and radiolysis mechanism. The results are consistent with current experiments.
One important result is that the non-radiative decay of the lowest electron-excited state of the self-trapped exciton proceeds more rapidly to the lowest hole-excited state than to the ground triplet state. Transfer of excitation energy from the electron to the hole (and hence the production of
F and
H centres) can proceed rapidly.

The optical properties of MgCl
2 have been studied by means of reflection spectra in the region from VUV to XUV, absorption spectra in the VUV region, XPS and UPS spectra. In order to interpret the experimental results, the electronic band structure of MgCl
2 has been calculated by means of the tight binding method for the core and valence band states and the plane wave method based on the empty lattice model for the conduction band states.
The obtained band structure is found to well explain the experimental results. Therefore, it is found that the top of the valence band is composed of two almost degenerate states, i.e.
Γ3− and
Γ2−. The polarization effect of the anisotropic crystal MgCl
2 which has the CdCl
2 layer type crystal structure is expected to appear at the Z points of the Brillouin zone.

A new absorption band has been found in RbI containing thallium of high concentration. The dependence of the luminescence intensity on the thallium concentration reveals that the new band is due to absorption by dimer (Tl
+)
2 centers. The analysis of the polarization of luminescence leads to the conclusion that the Tl
+–Tl
+ axis of a dimer center orients along a 〈110〉 axis of the crystal.

Resonant Raman effect of InI is investigated at 2.2 K by tuning a cw dye laser. Scattering spectra under the resonant excitation around the first exciton band consist of Raman lines which shift with the exciting laser energy, and of ordinary luminescence bands which do not shift in photon energy. Raman lines are composed of five Raman-active lines, forbidden 1LO (13.8 meV) and its overtone (27.5 meV). Two lines (7.00 meV and 10.7 meV) of five Raman-active lines are assigned as
Ag symmetry. Resonant enhancement in the scattering intensities occurs in the 1LO, the 2LO and two
Ag lines of five Raman-active lines. It is confirmed that the forbidden 1LO intensity shows steep enhancement in resonance with both bound and free excitons, whereas the 2LO intensity increases more gradually as the incident photon energy approaches to the free exciton energy.

The prototype structure of BaMF
4 type crystal is considered to be a structure composed of slabs of the perovskite, with the space group D
2h17. Normal modes at the
Γ point in the orthorhombic Brillouin zone of the hypothetical D
2h17 phase and the C
2v12 phase below the melting point were analyzed with a help of the group theory. The condensed modes to give the crystal structure at room temperature were assigned and discussed in comparison with the Sr
2Ta
2O
7 structure.

4 single crystal were studied by the measurements of the angle between two extinction positions, thermal expansions, dielectric constants and ultrasound velocities, and also by the weissenberg photographs. It has turned out that {N(CH

2CuCl
4 undergoes the phase transitions successively from the prototypic phase (Pmcn), to the incommensurate phase, to the ferroelastic commensurate monoclinic phase (P12
1/c1) and then to another monoclinic phase (P112
1/n) at
T1=24°C,
T2=18°C (on heating) and

Two kinds of AsO
32− radicals were found in the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of γ-irradiated CsH
2PO
4 including a small amount of AsO
43−. The splitting of the spectral line below
Tc represents a rotation of AsO
32− radical and the temperature dependence is represented by the formula A(
Tc–
T)
β with β=0.32±0.05 in the range from
Tc–5° to
Tc–0.7°. Meanwhile from the analysis of the ESR spectra of CsH
2PO
4 doped with Cr
3+, it was found that the Cr
3+ ion replaced Cs
+ ion and two protons near the Cs
+ site were vacant. Anomalous change of the breadth of the spectral line which was related with the slowing down of spin-lattice relaxation time was observed around
Tc. The correlation time of the magnetic fluctuation was estimated to be about 1.7×10
−11 sec at
Tc±2°.

Electric field gradient tensors at
87Rb sites in the paraelectric phase were obtained by observing the angular dependence of second order quadrupolar shifts. Temperature dependences of resonance lines were also measured from 60 to −105°C. It is found that in the paraelectric phase Rb atoms are located on the mirror plane perpendicular to the
a axis. With lowering temperature, each resonance line splits into two in the incommensurate phase. On further cooling, some of lines become too broad to be observed. Several degrees above
Tc, new lines appear and spectrum becomes essentially the same as that observed below
Tc.

By evolving Maxwell-Boltzmann transport equations, various quantities on swarm of charged particles have been analyzed. Although this treatment is properly general, and common transport equations for charged particles ought to be given, in particular, equations only for electrons were presented here. The relation between the random energy and the drift energy was first derived and the general expression of the electron velocity was deduced too. For a simple example, one dimensional steady-state electron swarm in a uniform medium was treated. Electron swarm characteristics numerically calculated in He, Ne or Ar exhibited some interesting properties, which were physically clearly elucidated. These results were also compared with several data already published. Agreements between them were qualitatively rather well in detailed structures.

As a correlated subject of electron swarm behavior analyzed by using transport equations, a general theory of the average energy loss factor of electrons is presented. From the energy balance equation, how the energy gain of electrons gained from the electric field is divided into several energy losses is first elucidated. Subsequently a theory of energy loss factor of electrons is established, on the basis of which characteristics of loss factors for He, Ne and Ar are drawn and their properties are discussed. Finally those calculated results are compared with some published data. Conception of the loss factor will be available for clarification of the energy loss mechanism of electrons in gas discharges.

The optical transition
2F7⁄2→
2F5⁄2 of Yb
3+ in the antiferromagnet YbCrO
3 has been studied. The exchange splittings for the ground and excited Kramers doublets were observed in the antiferromagnetic state. From the analysis of the splitting of the ground Kramers doublet as a function of applied magnetic field, it is concluded that main Cr–Yb magnetic interactions are the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya antisymmetric and the anisotropic-symmetric exchange interactions, which cause the splittings of the Kramers doublets in the absence of the external magnetic field. Besides single-ion excitations, a cooperative transition corresponding to the simultaneous excitation of the
2F7⁄2→
2F5⁄2 transition on a Yb
3+ ion and a spin flip of the ground doublet on its neighbouring Yb
3+ ion was observed.

R exciton lines of YbCrO
3 corresponding to the
4A2g→
2Eg transition of Cr
3+ have been measured at 4.2 K, where a first order phase transition induced by magnetic field
H0(⁄⁄
a)∼67 kOe has been found. We concluded that this phase transition is a metamagnetic transition at which the weak ferromagnetic moment of the Cr
3+ spins reverses its coupling with the magnetic moment of the Yb
3+ spins from antiparallel to parallel. By the analysis of the spectral changes in the metamagnetic transition, the molecular field upon the Cr
3+ ion due to the Cr–Yb magnetic interaction was estimated. Generally, if the magnetic moment of the rare-earth spins couples antiparallel to the weak ferromagnetic moment of the transition-metal spins for other orthochromites and orthoferrites, the metamagnetic transition of this type will be expected.

Absorption spectra corresponding to the
4A2g→
2Eg transition of Cr
3+ in YbCrO
3 were studied. In the lowest energy region,
R exciton lines with Davydov splitting were observed, and the magnitudes of the inter-sublattice exciton transfers were obtained by the analysis of these spectra. In the shorter wave length side of
R exciton lines, a band(
R′) of electric dipole character was observed, which has an anomalous shape with a sharp cut-off at the lowest energy side and fine structure. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of
R′ band suggest that it corresponds to the simultaneous excitation of a Cr
3+ exciton and a spin flip of the Yb
3+ ground state. From the analysis of the anomalous shape of
R′ band, a negative dispersion of the Cr
3+ exciton was found to be −16 cm
−1.

The electro-reflectance spectra of KDP have been measured by applying an electric field along the
z-axis in the photon energy region from 6 eV to 10.5 eV, from which the changes of the real part (
Δε
1) and imaginary part (
Δε
2) of the dielectric constant are deduced. The spectrum of
Δε
2 shows an absorption band-like shape at about 8.3 eV, a little lower energy than the reflection summit, and is interpreted as the change of the absorption intensity relevant to the electron transfer from the oxygen ions of a PO
4 tetrahedron to the nearby hydrogen ions. The spectrum of
Δε
1 shows a dispersion-like shape around the
Δε
2 band, and the change in the region below 7 eV well corresponds to the spectrum of the electro-optic coefficient ρ
63, though discrepancy is found in the absolute values of
Δε
1 between the one measured and the one estimated from the electro-optic effect.

The intensity distribution of elastic scattering agrees satisfactorily with the dynamical theory of electron diffraction if amorphous surface layers such as oxide and contamination are quite thin. The extinction contour formed by inelastic scattering of plasmon excitation is studied in detail. The difference of absorption coefficients obtained from elastic scattering and electron microscopic images is estimated by including the deviation of the Bragg condition for inelastic scattering.

Direct determination of the lattice location of Si and Al in Cr-2.3 a/o Si and Cr-1.4 a/o Al crystals has been made by measuring backscattered proton and X-ray emission. Both yields along some axial and planar directions show channeling dips which coincide almost with each other. It is concluded that Si and Al atoms occupy the substitutional sites in Cr at room temperature.

The low-energy molecule-molecule collisions are studied on the basis of the perturbed rotational state (PRS) functions, which are defined for the system of two polar molecules interacting with each other by the dipole-dipole interaction. By making use of the PRS functions as a basis set, a semiclassical impact-parameter calculation is carried out to determine rotational transition probabilities in HF–HF collisions. It is demonstrated that a near-resonant rotation-to-rotation energy transfer has a large probability and the relevant cross section is determined predominantly by the long-range dipole-dipole force, and that the sum of the quantum numbers
m (projections of the rotational angular momenta) of two polar molecules is likely to be conserved.

The analytical expressions suitable for the Monte Carlo calculation to obtain the solution of Schrödinger’s equation of hydrogen molecular ion in a strong magnetic field are derived. The wave functions, the energy values and the equilibrium internuclear distances of 1σ
g state of H
2+ are obtained numericallly through the Monte Carlo simulation and compared with other results based on the variational method. The agreement between them is fairly good over a wide range of magnetic field.
The calculation of the energy values of 1π
g state of H
2+ for various internuclear distances taking a constant magnetic field as a parameter, shows that the antibonding 1π
g state in the absence of the external magnetic field changes to a bonding state with an increasing magnetic field. The lowest energy values and the equilibrium internuclear distances of 1π
g state are also calculated for various magnetic field.

The single and double electron loss cross sections σ

The optical absorption of
D-(—)-luciferin (LH
2) in ethanol is calculated by our previous LCAO–ASMO–SCF–CI method for π-electrons.
It is found that the wavelengths of absorption of LH
2 observed in ethanol can be reproduced only when the screening of two-center Coulomb repulsion integrals is taken into account for all the pairs of atoms except bonded ones. It is also found that the observed absorption spectrum can be explained by the model of LH
2 interacting with two ethanol point-dipoles.

A new possibility for plasma heating is proposed and theoretical investigation is performed. Under a suitable experimental condition, the wave induced by the two-stream instability and Buneman/ion-acoustic wave induced by the return current can coexist and interact to yield a new contribution to plasma heating by the relativistic electron beam. The authors assume this is the case and develop the formulation necessary for the analysis of the spectral function of turbulent plasma. Anomalous heating is investigated in the system composed of a plasma and a relativistic electron beam (REB) along a uniform external magnetic field. The wave kinetic equation derived in the preceding paper (J. Phys. Soc. Jpn.
49 (1980) 1524) is applied to the REB-plasma system. As the mechanism of plasma heating, the wave of the two-stream instability and Buneman or ion-acoustic wave induced by the return current are coupled through the nonlinear wave-particle interaction. High heating rate is obtained from the estimation of the stopping power. The turbulent collision frequency and the perpendicular energy transfer agree with the experimental and numerical results.

The characteristics of the equilibrium of a current carrying plasma of a circular cross section with a non-planar magnetic axis are studied analytically. Experiments are described in which the correlation time and fluctuation level of ion waves are measured under the condition of turbulent heating using twin capacitive probes. When the resistivity becomes anomalous, the correlation time becomes shorter, typically several periods of ion waves, and the energy density of the waves is of the order of 0.2·10
−2 neTe. The ion heating rate and correlation times of ion waves (electrostatic ion cyclotron waves) are well explained by the quasilinear theories dealing with the stochastic mechanism. The anomalous resistivity is also found to result in the rapid electron heating.

A unique nature of the magnetic configuration of current-carrying plasma in ferromak is demonstrated and it is compared with the stellarator configuration. The presence of magnetic islands in the ferromak configuration is also suggested.
