The free Fermion theory for an assembly of physisorbed atoms on an anisotropic rectangular lattice contains an unphysical process; an exchange of two adjacent domain walls. To remove such exchange, we develop here a revised approach which may be called the “interacting Fermion approach”. The revised model is analyzed by means of RPA. It is shown that the IC
2 phase found in our previous report based upon the free Fermion model is retained in the revised model.

Translational energy spectra of He
+ ions produced by one-electron capture processes in collisions of 0.8 and 2 keV He
2+ with H
2 and 0.8 keV He
2+ with N
2 have been measured with an electrostatic energy analyzer. The spectra show only a single broad peak with the energy gain of about 11 eV for all the cases. The peak in each spectrum becomes broader with the increase of the collision energy. It is found that the product He
+ is in the ground state and the capture process is associated with the dissociation and/or ionization of the product molecular ion.

Two dimensional electrons in a strong magnetic field show the fractional quantum Hall effect at low temperatures. This effect is explained successfully by a discovery of a new liquid type ground state. However the infinitely strong magnetic field has been assumed in existing theories. Here the ground state around one third filling of the lowest Landau level is investigated at a finite magnetic field by numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. When the cyclotron energy is not too small compared to a typical Coulomb energy, no qualitative change of the ground state is found: A natural generalization of the liquid state at the infinite magnetic field describes the ground state. Excitation energies of quasiparticles decrease as the magnetic field decreases.

3 single crystal have been measured in a pulsed magnetic field up to about 100 kOe. Here the 1-, 2- and 3-axes are along the binary axis, in the glide plane and along the trigonal axis, respectively. Both α
33 and α
23 have a finite value after a spin flop transition in the range from liquid helium temperature to room temperature. This result leads to the conclusion that the magnetic point symmetry of spin flopped Cr
2O
3 is 2⁄
m′ or 1′. The compatible spin direction in the basal plane must have a component normal to the binary axis.

Proton NMR measurements have been carried out to study the effects of external field on the field induced phase transition in a system with competing anisotropy: CsMn
1−xCo
xCl
3·2H
2O. The appearance of the particular NMR lines has been observed and indicates the phase transition between the antiferromagnetic and intermediate phases. A part of the phase diagram in an external field is extracted from the NMR results.

In a previous paper (M. Shimizu: J. Mol. Evol.
18 (1982) 297), it was discussed by using the CPK molecular model that a pocket on a complex of four nucleotides (C4N), namely three anticodon bases and a discriminator base, can recognize the cognate proteineous amino acid by a
lock and key relationship. An experimental support for this picture is given here. Some C4Ns have been detected by using an ultraviolet difference absorbance method and their high specificity to the amino acids has been shown, explicitly giving the binding constants among them.

The three-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon [, Higgs field and Yang-Milles] (3D–KG [, H and YM]) equation is first reduced to the 2D nonlinear Schrödinger (2D–NLS) and 2D–KG [, H and YM] equations, and secondly to the 1D–NLS and 1D–KG [, H and YM] equations by similarity transformations. A spin polarized electron system is investigated by the recently developed technique for the Monte Carlo simulation of the path integral. It as found that the melting temperature of the Wigner crystal has the maximum value \simeq30 K at the density \simeq2.2×10
12 cm
−2. The phase diagram is obtained and the melting temperature shows monotonic decrease at the higher densities. The total energy shows hysteresis on the most part of the transition line.

Radiative transition probabilities filling vacancies in atomic
N subshells have been calculated relativistically for six elements with atomic number between

Instabilities of two-dimensional weakly nonlinear standing gravity waves on the surface of deep water are investigated on the basis of the Zakharov equation. It is found that the instability due to the resonant interaction among waves concerning the wave numbers
k0 and −
k0 gives the growth rate larger than that due to the resonant interaction among waves concerning
k0. The restabilization of the entire system for large steepness does not occur for the standing wave. Furthermore, a coupled set of nonlinear Schrödinger type equations is derived from the Zakharov equation for long wave perturbations and a criterion for the Benjamin-Feir type instability is obtained.

The present paper is concerned with the propagation of sound generated by distributed harmonic line sources in a two-dimensional duct with sheared mean flow. A Green’s function to the convected wave equation is constructed by the use of the derivative expansion method with respect to the small deviation of the shear flow velocity from the uniform one. As application of the presented Green’s function, the sound field is evaluated for typical sound sources in some simple shear flows.

Numerical soilutons for the steady flow of a viscous fluid driven by a slowly rotating disk in a cylinder of finite aspect ratio are presented. Based on the comprehensive flow data acquired, the torque exerted on the disk is computed. The radial and axial structures of both the azimuthal and meridional flow details are exhibited. The effect of small, but non-zero, Reynolds number is discussed. The torque increases rapidly as the disk-cylinder radius ratio approaches unity because of the concentrated flow gradients near the tip of the disk. As the cylinder aspect ratio increases, the torque decreases. The flow can be approximated by the infinite cylinder model if the aspect ratio is greater than about 2.0. The theoretical torque estimate by using the infinite cylinder configuration is shown to be in reasonable agreement with the numerical results for large aspect ratios.

The “critical β” at which an equilibrium either ceases to exist or becomes poor for confinement is determined for a non-axisymmetric system with a closed helical magnetic axis. The plasma is assumed to have a circular cross section through which a longitudinal current with a flat radial profile flows in a direction to either increase or decrease the rotational transform of the magnetic field. It is shown that an equilibrium does not exist in a certain range of current which increases the rotational transform due to the resonance of toroidal effects. It is also shown that there are the upper and lower limits of β value for a stable equilibrium.

The neutron diffraction study of liquid tellurium has been carried out to reveal the origin of characteristic temperature dependence of various properties related to the atomic scale structure. The temperature dependence of measured structural functions of liquid tellurium could be explained by a gradual transition from the two-fold coordinated ordering (non-metallic) to the three-fold coordinated one (metallic). Thermodynamic properties of liquid tellurium have also been appeared to be consistent with the present interpretation for the change in structure with increasing temperature.

Amplitude-dependent internal friction was measured at the temperature range of 2–15 K on Al-0.01 at%Si single crystal and 99.999%Al. From the temperature dependence of applied strain under a constant internal friction, the binding energy
U0 between a dislocation and a pinning obstacle was determined as 0.5–0.8 eV in Al-0.01 at%Si and 0.05–0.06 eV in 99.999%Al. The value of
U0 for Al-0.01 at%Si is very large and cannot be explained as a dislocation—a single solute atom interaction. Silicon atoms in Al probably precipitated into clusters because of the very low solubility, and dislocations were thought to be pinned strongly by Si clusters.

4 were grown and dielectric properties were measured below room temperature down to 4.2 K. Two phase transitions were newly observed at 62.4 K and 7.5 K. The dielectric constant along the
b-direction shows a peak at 62.4 K and a break at 7.5 K. Neither ferroelectric hysteresis loop nor pyroelectricity was, however, found below the 62.4 K transition.

Higher order collision process between a kink and a phonon is investigated in the one-dimensional φ
4 system. Diagrammatic perturbation method is used, where the amplitude of the phonon is the smallness parameter. It is shown that the phonon transfers the momentum to the kink in the fourth order. The momentum transfer is obtained by the contributions of poles of order two in the integrals over momenta. The final velocity of the kink, derived as a function of the incident phonon wave number, reproduces exactly the result of the previous discussion using conservation laws. The kink, which is not moving at first, begins to move after the collision in the direction of the incident phonon. The effective interaction between them is attractive. Possible mechanisms which determine the viscosity of the kink are pointed out.

Anisotropic emission of Auger electrons from clean surfaces of layer type semiconductors GaSe
1−xS
x has been investigated in the full range of the molar fraction
x (0≤
x≤1) with particular attention to Se-3dVV and S-2pVV transitions. The experimental results show that Auger electrons are ejected isotropically from atoms which are excited by the primary electron beam. These Auger electrons are subsequently diffracted by surrounding atoms before they escape from the surface. The observed angular dependence exhibits local symmetry of the surface corresponding to each polytype in this crystal system. The experimental results are in good agreement with the diffraction pattern calculated on the basis of a simple kinematic model.

The crystal growth rates of some physical vapor transport processes are compared with the molecular flux which strikes a unit area per unit time under equilibrium vapor pressures. Some reported data of the growth rate agree in value with the calculated flux corrected by the temperature-independent condensation coefficient. It is concluded that those systems are controlled by the surface kinetics.

Effects of the dipole-dipole interaction on the multivalency of adatoms on the metal surfaces are studied. For the system with two adatoms, it is shown that the transition line exists, across which the valency of two adatoms in the ground state changes discontinuously. The result is extended to the system with many adatoms, and a model is proposed of the valence transition. The coverage dependence of the work function is also discussed.

The 4-site Hubbard clusters with several geometrical structures are investigated. The stable structures are found to be the close packed, distorted and loose packed structures for the less than half-filled, nearly half-filled and more than half-filled cases, respectively. The distorted structure which is due to the Jahn-Teller instability shows a characteristic non-uniform charge distribution. The electron correlation has remarkable effects on the stability of the distorted structure with the non-uniform charge distribution and the appearance of a high spin configuration. The structural distortion due to the Jahn-Teller effect is discussed in relation to the charge density wave in low-dimensional solids.

Soliton-like excitations which preserve the charge neutrality are investigated with the model based on the pseudopotential theory. Two types of excitations are investigated: the one that has the band gap above the Fermi level and the other that is a kind of the bound state of soliton and antisoliton and all states below the gap are occupied. These solitons are taken as metastable states that satisfy the stability condition and variations of electronic band structure in the soliton region are fully taken into account. The numerical calculations are performed in the succeeding paper.

Numerical calculations are performed for the soliton-like excitations proposed in the preceding paper around the estimated magnitudes of parameters. The antisymmetric soliton exists in the wide range of parameters but only in the limited range of δ
Q⁄
Q0 which changes with temperature. The excitation energy and the displacement amplitude of this soliton show remarkable temperature dependence. The symmetric soliton can exist in the limited range of parameters and the above temperature dependence is more moderate than the antisymmetric soliton.

Localization-delocalization transition has been examined for interacting one-dimensional fermion systems with the backward and the Umklapp scattering by use of the phase Hamiltonian. In this approach the localized state is represented as that where the phase variable of either charge or spin (or both of them) is pinned by impurities and then distorted spatially, i.e. glassy. The transition can be understood as the depinning process due to the quantum fluctuations and its boundary has been determined both from the localized region and from the delocalized region. The two different procedures are shown to yield same criterion for the transition.

The one-electron energy band structure for UGe
3, which has attracted interest as a typical spin-fluctuation system, is calculated by an APW method with the LSD approximation exchange potential. Relativistic effects are taken into account. The 5f electrons hybridise with the Ge 4p electrons considerably and form bands which spread over about 0.2 Ryd. The Fermi level lies at a sharp peak in the density of states. The Fermi surface, the extremal cross-sectional area and the cyclotron mass are calculated carefully. The Fermi surface consists of two closed hole sheets centred at R in the eighth and ninth bands, and a lens-like electron pocket at M and a hollow-ball-like electron sheet centred at R in the tenth band. There exists no open orbit. These calculated results account well for experimental results for the de Haas-van Alphen effect and the magnetoresistance.

The electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance of 1T-TaS
2−xSe
x (
x=0–0.4) have been measured from a few Kelvin to 30 mK. The resistivity follows a two dimensional variable range hopping process in the temperature range from a few Kelvin to 1 K and deviates upward at lower temperatures. On the other hand, the magnetoresistance is found to show positive and negative ones. The resistivity and the corresponding positive magnetoresistance become larger as the growth temperature of crystal becomes higher and/or as the doping amount of Se becomes more. Below about 0.1 K, only the negative magnetoresistance is observed. These results are qualitatively understood by taking into account the Zeeman effect of the electrons, suppression of hopping process by the magnetic field and also the magnetic order of the spins of the localized electrons.

Transport properties of the charge-density-wave state in K

3 are investigated. A thermal hysteresis in the ohmic resistance and an electrical hysteresis in the differential resistance are found. In addition, the temperature dependence of the threshold field
ET, above which the charge-density wave is depinned, is found to be different from that reported already. Possible origins of the difference are discussed.

Measurements of the magnetization were carried out on the single crystal of (Gd
1−xDy
x)Al
2 ternaries with
x=0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 at 4.2 K. For all the compounds with 0.05≤
x≤0.4, the easy direction of magnetization is along the [100] axis, the magnetization along the [110] axis increases gradually with increasing applied field and tends to saturate, whereas the magnetization along the [111] axis saturates after taking a sharp rise at a relatively low field. The observed magnetic moment indicates that the Gd and Dy ions have the moments for respective R
3+ free ions and those couple parallel with each other in the ternaries. The magnetization curves were analyzed in terms of the molecular field approximation including the cubic crystalline electric field. The theoretical curves are presented and are in reasonable agreement with the corresponding observed ones. Magnitude of the magnetic moment for Dy ion in the crystalline field is also discussed.

4 with competing spin anisotropies. The direction of individual Fe spin has been shown to be tilted in both the antiferromagnetic (AF) and mixed ordering phases. This means that, in the AF phase, the spin component which has no long-range order exists statically at least in the time scale of the Larmor precession of
57Fe (∼10
−8 s) and couples to the other spin component which exhibits a long-range order.
The behavior of individual Fe spin is different from that in the other mixtures (1
D and 3
D systems). In the sample of
x=0.81, with decreasing temperature, Fe spins fall down successively from a direction almost parallel to the
c-axis to the direction which makes an angle of ∼70° with the
c-axis. This phenomenon is probably connected with a change from 2
D order into 3
D order of the spin system.

Measurements of the magnetization process at 4.2 K and 1.3 K for magnetic field up to about 150 kOe and of the temperature dependence of the susceptibility between 4.2 K and room temperature have been done in order to investigate Kondo states of dilute and dense Kondo system in single crystalline Ce

6. A largely anisotropic magnetization and the temperature dependence of susceptibility in dilute alloys indicate the
Γ8 quartet Kondo state contrary to the previous report. Dependence of Kondo temperature on the Ce concentration is very weak.

TN on cooling.

Luminescence spectra and decaytimes have been measured over a wide temperature range. Thermal equilibrium population between free and self-trapped excitons has been confirmed in both dimeric (α) and monomeric (β) forms of perylene crystals. Two-center type self-trapped exciton in α-perylene, and one-center type and two-center type self-trapped excitons in β-perylene are stable and play prominent roles in exciton radiative decay. The decaytimes of free and self-trapped exciton luminescence are discussed in terms of exciton-lattice interaction. The exciton band width is briefly discussed.

Optical darkening and thermal bleaching of very thin a-As
2S
3 films with 80±10 nm thickness have been investigated. A new absorption band with a half height width of 1.37 eV peaking at 3.32 eV occurs by illumination on the films with ∼3 eV or ∼4 eV photons at 80 K. The thermal behavior of this band is almost identical with that of the shift of the absorption edge in thick films reported by others. Another new band with a half height width of 1.95 eV peaking at 3.63 eV is produced by thermal annealing of the film showing the 3.32 eV band up to about 440 K. Possible optical and thermal kinetics to understand the results are discussed.

The temperature dependence of reflectivity of chromium is measured at energies below 1 eV. A systematic change of the reflectivity dips is observed below the Néel temperature (
TN=312 K), indicating the two energy gap structure associated with the incommensurate spin density wave state in Cr. This salient feature of the reflectivity data is successfully accounted for in terms of the soliton lattice solution for the two-band Lomer model within the mean-field approximation.

The magnitude and temperature dependence of energy gaps in Cr-rich Cr–Al alloys are obtained by infrared reflectivity measurements at wavelengths from 1 to 40 micrometers. This alloy system is intriguing because it exhibits both incommensurate and commensurate itinerate electron antiferromagnetism (AFM) as well as semiconducting properties, depending on Al concentration. Single-crystal alloys with up to 6.4%Al are studied, and polycrystalline alloys of 19 to 38%Al. Alloys with up to 1 at%Al exhibit absorptions near 0.12 and 0.45 eV, similar to pure Cr. Alloys of 1.4 and 1.9%Al show no temperature-dependent structure which can be associated with itinerate AFM and corroborate the recent suggestion of an intermediate magnetic state between 1.1 and 3%Al. Alloys containing 3 to 6.4%Al have absorption near 0.35 eV which is attributed to commensurate AFM ordering. Alloys with 19 and 27%Al exhibit absorptions near 0.3 and 0.041 eV, corresponding to commensurate magnetic order and semiconductor-like structure, respectively.

Polarized extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and near-edge spectra are measured on the Br K-edge for streteh-oriented
trans-(CHBr
y)
x. A large difference is observed in both the EXAFS and near-edge regions between the spectra with the polarization vector
E parallel and perpendicular to the axis of orientation. The Fourier transform results or polarized EXAFS demonstrate that polybromine ions are highly oriented along the fibril axis in the dopant concentration 0.015<
y<0.036. Bromines are also shown to be covalently bonded with carbon atoms of the polymer backbone through a substitution reaction and dominate the radial distribution of bromine in the direction perpendicular to the fibril axis. Polarized near-edge spectra show that the anisotropic bonding states of bromine are characterized by the Br–Br bond in the parallel direction and the Br–C bond in the perpendicular direction to the fibril axis, respectively. We propose that
trans-(CHBr
y)
x can be described in terms of highly oriented polybromine ions and brominated carbon chains.

Polarized reflection spectra have been measured on three different kinds of polydiacetylene crystal, poly-[2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol-bis-(p-toluene sulfonate)] (PTS), poly-[2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol-bis-phenylurethane] (HDU) and poly-[5,7-decadiyne-1,12-diol-bis-phenylurethane] (TCDU), over the photon energy range of 1–25 eV by means of synchrotron radiation spectroscopy. Spectral changes, associated with topochemical transformation from monomer to polymer crystals of PTS and with the stress-induced isomeric phase-transition or TCDU crystals, were investigated. Spectral features showing characteristic polarization dependence with respect to the polymer chain axis are interpreted by an electronic band-structure model of polydiacetylene crystals. Especially, the reflection peaks located at about 2 and 7 eV are assigned to the one-dimensional excitons associated with the π–π
* transitions on the conjugated polymer chains.

Transient behavior of luminescence has been measured in high-purity CdTe in the 17–82 K temperature range using a mode-locked Kr
+ laser as the excitation source. The presence of the bottleneck of the excitonic polariton has been clearly observed in the wavelength dependence of the luminescence decay time. It has also been found that when the excitation density is varied, the spectral shape as well as the efficiency of the polariton luminescence change, while the decay time remains almost constant. Mechanisms of the relaxation following the photo-excitation are discussed.

A theory is presented for an appearance of band-type pattern of electric potential accompanied with electric current surrounding a unit or many-cell system of a cylindrical shape. A flux continuity at the membrane is reduced to a nonlinear equation composed of passive and active fluxes through a diffusion equation for protons. Another equation concerns the concentration of a diffusive substance weakening the pump activity. It is shown that, when an external parameter is varied from the homogeneous state, a symmetry breaking along a longitudinal axis usually appears before the one along a circumferential direction. A TDGL equation for spatial modes, which can describe both normally and invertedly bifurcating cases, is derived. An observation of hysteretic bands of chloroplasts in the green alga
Acetabularia is discussed within the present theoretical scheme.

Primary structure of proteins occasionally shows periodic pattern of hydro-phobicity. The periodicity in the hydrophobicity of amino acid sequence was studied for intrinsic membrane proteins. Power spectral density was calculated by a maximum entropy method which shows the highest resolution of spectra from short sequences of data among various methods. Power spectral density from total amino acid sequence gave a sharp peak at the period of 40 residues, arising from the average distance between neighboring helices. Spectral analysis of every fifteen residues indicated that the helix-periodicity of 3.6 residues was significantly localized at the edges or helices. Functionally important helices had the tendency to exhibit the helix-period also at the center of the helix.
