This study examined work-related stress concerning the difference in the relationship of expected supervision and actual supervision in a sample of 429 vocational rehabilitation service personnel in Japan. Cluster analysis was conducted on the total scores of expected supervision and actual supervision, which are classified into 4 groups. Using the Kruskal-Wallis test, we examined whether there were significant differences in work-related stress among the 4 groups of the vocational rehabilitation service personnel. We found that the group that is high in both expected supervision and actual supervision (group 1) was higher in spirit and experienced lower feelings of frustration and depression than both the group that is low in both expected supervision and actual supervision (group 3) and the group with high expected supervision and low actual supervision (group 4). The findings of the study can be used to inform actual implementation of quality vocational rehabilitation supervision services in Japan.
