The anaerobic digestibility of tannery waste sludge from the cattlehide tannery factory was studied in batch culture under mesophilic (37°C) and thermophilic (55°C) conditions.
When the concentrations of the waste sludge under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions were respectively up to 75, 000mg/l and 25, 000mg/l, the gas production increased in proportion as the concentration, and under mesophilic condition the gasif ication rate and the methane yield were found to be 720ml/g and 560ml/g, respectively.
While under thermophilic condition the gas production was inhibited in the concentration of sludge beyond 12, 500mg/l, which might be caused by accumulation of anaerobic metabolites inclusive of the lower fatty acids in the culture solution.
Thermal pretreatment under mesophilic condition did not effect on anaerobic digestibility of tannery waste sludge.
