Aiming at developing a ventricular assist device driven by autologous latissimus dorsi muscles, we have developed a Roller Screw Linear Muscle Actuator (RSLMA) that converts the linear contracting power of the skeletal muscle to power necessary for driving a ventricular assist device. After preconditioning for 8-week continuous stimulation, the left latissimus dorsi muscle of mongrel dogs was connected with the RSLMA, and we have evaluated the possibility of effectiveness of left ventricular assistance. While a 90-minute continuous stimulation (burst frequency 35 Hz, 60 bpm) was delivered under the environment of left ventricular assistance, the trained latissimus dorsi muscle was able to provide average external power of 1.3 watt and the muscle became resistive to fatigue. This has suggested the possibility that the contracting power of Autologous latissimus dorsi muscles can be used as a driving system in the left ventricular assist device.
