Composite films of Nb2O5-SiO2 have been deposited at room temperature using RAS (radical assisted sputtering) water. The results of XRD and cross section SEM observation showed these composite films are all amorphous. The refractive index of the composite films can be adjusted from 1.60 to 2.10 with repeatability of better than 1% by controlling sputter power of Nb and Si cathodes separately. By using intermediate refractive index films, we can fabricate the optical multilayer film with superior optical performance.
This paper describes availability of a human detection device to protect the elderly in a nursing home from a tumbling over. The device including an infrared sensor with Fresnel lens was installed in the private room of the nursing home and connected to emergency call for nurses. When the low-grade dementia elderly appears in front of the infrared sensor at night, the device calls a nurse automatically. After installation of the device, the number of tumbles decreased from 2 to 0 a month.
A new type of industrial furnace was created based on rather old technology and principle, namely the carbon bed and the Ellingham diagram. This furnace made it possible to physicochemically lower the partial oxygen pressure in the furnace for heat treatment only by using inert gasses without using any conventional reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen, nor using mechanical evacuation like a vacuum furnace. By lowering partial oxygen pressure in the furnace, atmosphere heat treatment, such as sintering and brazing, of a variety of metallic materials became possible. At the same time, by using a carbon-carbon composite belt, a continuous conveyance for mass production up to 2600°C became available. This study presents a practical example of creating a new technology by adding new value to old technology.
Some biochemical gas-sensors (bio-sniffer devices) for smell informatics were developed using biological materials, such as xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes, and a reaction cell with both gas and liquid phase compartments separated by a porous diaphragm membrane. The bio-sniffer devices could be used to measure alcohol, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, trimethylamine, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, hydrogen peroxide in the gas phase with gas selectivity being attributable to substrate specificity of enzymes. Stick-type sniffer devices fabricated by screen-printing and microfabrication techniques were successfully applied for evaluating breath alcohol and acetaldehyde after drinking. A biochemical nose system was constructed using 4-ch oxygen sensitive optical fiber array with the enzyme immobilized membranes. A smell communication with over 80% of transmissibility was carried out using 4-ch gas generator connected with the nose system
Fuel cells are one of the important future power generators and of high interest to the public. However, the concept “fuel cell” contains quite difficult aspects to understand even for electro-chemical engineers. In this exposition, the key concept of fuel cells was showed and expounded. The some current topics and issues on fuel cell technology were also point out, irrespective of fuel cell types.
