Negative varietal correlation between plant weight and nitrogen content of the plant is not genetic per se, but rather developmental. It is caused by the interaction of genetic system taking charge of growth rate at early vegetative phase with the amount of environmental nitrogen supply. The relative abundance of nitrogen supply to the plant is the factor responsible fcr the "closeness" of negative correlation. Because of big genotype-environment interaction, the usefulness of heritability and genetic correlation, on the basis of true genetic variation, would be much reduced in characters like plant weight, nitrogen content of the plant, and total amount of nitrogen in the plant.
