Belonging to the same genus Triticum, a species showed typical festucoid leaf characters, whereas another exhibited a panicoid-like leaf structure. The “panicoid-like leaf structure” which is not wholly panicoid lacking the “chlorophyllous parenchymatous bundle sheath” was found to be accompanied with a high photosynthetic rate, and it was found in the wild types generally grown on dry land. Among commercial wheat varieties, Mexi-Pak, a semi-dwarf, high-fertilizer-responder showed a compact arrangement of the mesophyll cells as compared with older varieties.
