Various abnormal chromosome pairings especially tetravalent, were observed in most of the selected short-culm strains in R
4 and R
5. The tetravalent was responsible for variation of agronomic characteristics, resulting in short culm. It was presumed that this fact was the reason why most of the individuals with the tetravalent coud compete with the normal individuals (21 II) on the occasion of selection in this breeding. The reconstruction of chromosome structure by reciprocal translocations was considered to be efficient as a breeding method in bread wheat.
