The purpose of this study is to clarify the realization process and planning method of the spur dikes combined by rocks proposed in a citizen workshop of the Katabira River in Yokohama. We conducted studying siting plans, verification of safety, constructions by citizens, and post-construction monitorings. In results, sediment accumulation in the riverbed, riffle formation, channel definition, and remains of major masonry structures are observed. Based on the above results, the following four points are discussed: a. Consensus building process: transformation into a learning community based on experience, b. Planning process: responsive process management, c. River environment design methods based on river management capabilities, and d. Techniques for citizens’ involvement in river development.

This study aims to clarify the actual preservation of scenic views against the development of railroads in mountains during the Taisho period from the following viewpoints: (1) procedures for applying for development permits, (2) methods for evaluating scenic views, (3) measures for maintaining scenic beauty, and (4) principles for preserving scenic beauty. With regard to the application for permission, the Civil Engineering Division of the Kyoto Prefecture conducted preliminary consultations from the planning stage, and provided guidance based on surveys by engineers and the opinions of the Shrine and Temple Division. To evaluate the viewshed, the Kyoto Prefecture used the scenic spots in the city and the middle and distant views from the roads and bridges as the standard, and took technical steps to clearly identify the viewing section. Contrarily, in the case of non-permission, the Prefecture decided not to grant permission for the construction of the railroad if it interfered with maintaining the view the skyline. The Kyoto Prefecture provided guidance on the selection of routes through the valleys and the shielding of these structures by trees as a way of maintaining scenic beauty. In addition to highlighting the beauty of the mountain's shape and its appearance, the historical value of these sites, their scenic beauty, and the dignity of sacred and spiritual areas were emphasized. The opinions of the Shrine and Temple Division were respected throughout this process.

This paper aims to clarify the features of landscape description in modern Kyoto by analyzing the sensory expressions in the 20 essays. Specifically, we extracted 589 expressions from the essays and analyzed the contents of the diverse and abundant sensory expressions, including visual expressions focusing on realism, color, or light and shade, somatic sensory expressions by tactile sense or hearing, subjective expressions related to the impressions, interest/pleasure, the projection of moods, and the perception of seasonal feelings, and associative expressions related to literature, history, and religious meaning. Moreover, by analyzing the co-occurrence relations of these sensory expressions, we recognized the tendency of the combination and the features of expressions with multiple sensory, mainly visual ones.

This study attempted to reevaluate the locality regarding red-tile roofs on Ishigaki Island based on objective characteristics and residents’ perceptions. We investigated the formation process and characteristics of two types of red-tile roof landscapes: conventional housing styles and new building styles promoted by administrative measures since the 1980s. Furthermore, we investigated the attachment and preference of residents living in different villages and having different residential experiences with conventional red-tile roofs. The results showed that the attachment and preference for the traditional red-tile roof is partly based on the experience of the traditional red-tile roof, while the attachment and preference for the new type of red-tile roof is partly based on the comparison with the traditional red-tile roof. It was confirmed that conventional red-tile roofs support the promotion of administrative policies and the attachment to and preference for the newly formed red-tile roofs.

This study aims to clarify the characteristics of natural objects and images in waka poems of Nishiyama, Kyoto, by focusing on the region of images. After extracting the natural objects in each place from the waka poems in the early modern guidebooks, we categorized and analyzed the characteristics of the image based on the contents of descriptions and the historical and social background of the places. Moreover, we analyzed the relationships among the images of each place and their changes over time, considering the similarity of the images and the proximity of the places. As a result, clusters of images with high similarity and commonality across several places were recognized. In the clusters, we recognized that the images were inherited and reproduced over the ages.
