    This paper describes the results of analysis and testing conducted on the in-plane shear modulus and strength of laminated carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) aluminum honeycomb sandwich panels. The analytical method for the fracture strength of the sandwich panel was as follows : the primary load carrying members are the face sheets stabilized by low-density core material. The stress components analysis showed a normal stress in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the fiber and a shear stress along the fiber was determined in the laminate of each layer, taking into account the elastic failure prior to overall fracture. This was then compared with the fundamental strength in relation to the aforementioned kind of fracture mechanisms of the unidirectional CFRP. The sandwich panels make use of the facing laminated angles of 25°, 0°, 90°, -25° and 45°, 0°, 90°, -45°. The panel was loaded in shear by applying a tensile load to a picture frame test fixture having diagonally opposite corners. The test results on the fracture strength and fracture modes have a good correspondence with the analytical results. Holographic interference techniques were applied to non-destructive inspection at the delamination of the interlaminar in CFRP laminate or CFRP laminate-honeycomb core interface. Through this process one of the serious defects in the sandwich panel became apparent.

    One of the methods available to toughen the plastic matrix composite is to use the metal fiber as reinforcement, which kind of composites is, called MFRP (Metal Fiber Reinforced Plastics). In this paper the tensile strength, the creep strength and the creep rupture strength of Molybdenum/Epoxy composites are studied in order to know the fundamental properties of MFRP. As a result of the experiments, the rule-of-mixture for popular use was found to be applicable to the tensile strength. Like the tensile strength, the creep strength and the creep rupture strength were also represented by the same formulae of the rule-of-mixture for a constant creep rate and a constant creep rupture time. By making further analysis of the experimental results, for the creep strength and the creep rupture strength simplified equations which are expressed by a function of the creep rate and the creep rupture time respectively were obtained. Multiple Necking of molybdenum fiber was observed in specimens with Vf=2% during creep deformation.

    Tensile strength of specimens of coated fabric which had a crack, a bias crack and a circular defect respectively was measured using a uniaxial and using a biaxial tensile tester. Then, uniaxial and biaxial tensile strength figures were compared, and strengths for the three types of defect condition were compared. Further, uniaxial strengths of four types of coated fabric material specimens with cracks were measured, and the anisotropy of tensile strength along warp and filling was investigated. It was concluded : that strength under uniaxial stress condition was smaller than that under biaxial stress condition; that the crack defect was the most significant type of defect in decreasing strength ; and that the anisotropy of the uniaxial strength of a specimen with a crack depended on differences of type of material and on initial crack length. And, relations between crack opening ratio under deformation and stress were measured on the specimen, where it was discovered that crack opening ratio was approximately linearly proportional to stress magnitude over a limited region of stress magnitude and that this relation was useful for measurement of stress in coated fabrics.

    Impact absorption energy measurements of three types of rolled-up steel plate composite were carried out at the temperature of -198, -87 or 20deg;C respectively. Geometrical construction effects on the absorption energy of the composites at low temperature were shown. Impact absorption energy of the composites was almost constant in the temperature range between -198 and 20°C and it was higher than that of low carbon steel at -196°C. Lower density was desirable for high impact resistance among the same type composite, particularly at low temperatures.
