The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between the experience and the self-awareness of ethnic identity of the third and forth generation Japanese–Brazilian youths who are living in Japan. The semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 young Japanese–Brazilian people with Japanese elementary and junior high school experience. The results with regard to their experiences were classified into four categories: “home,” “school,” “workplace,” and “return to Brazil.” And, it was shown that various life experiences have an impact on forming the self-awareness of ethnic identity. Moreover, the point of view of “person-environment fit” was examined. The following four points were revealed as factors to form the self-awareness of ethnic identity of Japanese–Brazilian youths. First building parent–child relationship is important in the home environment. Second, the school environment including teachers has a dominant influence. Third, the ethnic identity is determined by Japanese coworkers in the workplace environment. Forth, people who return on their own to Brazil and who stay long term try hard to participate actively in society.
