    Phonon properties and structural phase transition of negative thermal expansion material, ZrW2O8, were investigated from a thermodynamic point of view. Calorimetric investigation revealed that the phase transition involved the correlated orientational disordering of WO4 units. In the ZrW2O8,-based solid solutions, the substitution effects on the phase transition were classified into two types. Spectrum analysis of heat capacity provided the phonon density of states of ZrW2O8, and HfW2O8, showing characteristic features of negative thermal expansion materials.

    Interaction of 1,10-pehanthroline (phen) and metal (II) thiocyanato complexes with nonionic micelles of poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) type surfactant, Triton X, with varying its chain length has been investigated by potentiometric, spectrophotometric, and calorimetric titration at 298 K. Data are well explained in terms of the association model in which the species accommodated in Triton X micelles are expressed as an adduct with a surfactant molecule, as well as the phase distribution model in which the micelles provide microscopic non-aqueous phase. The distribution constant, transfer enthalpy and entropy from aqueous to micellar phase significantly depend on the PEO chain length of the surfactant. This suggests the intramicellar heterogeneous structure consists of PEO and hydrophobic region of the surfactant. The intrinsic thermodynamic parameters of transfer and/or the complex formation in each region have been determined. These values indicate the hydrogen-bonding network weekly remains in PEO phase of the micelles while the core phase resembles non-aqueous solvent.

    Recent studies on thermal properties of thermo-irreversible polysaccharide hydrogels formed by physical and chemical cross-linking are reviewed. Aqueous solution of polysaccharides forms thermo-irreversible hydrogels via ionic linkage, hydrogen bonding formed by freezing-thawing and chemical linkage. Polysaccharide electrolyte solutions, such as low-methoxyl pectin and sodium alginate, form various kinds of hydrogels when divalent cations are added. Polysaccharide molecules wrap divalent cations and an unique cross-linking zone known as egg-box structure is formed. Viscoelastic properties of Ca-pectin and Ca-alginate hydrogels are measured by thermomechanical analysis (TMA) in water. Dynamic modulus of hydrogels increases with increasing the cross-linking zone. Locust bean gum (LBG), which has been accepted as a non-gelling polysaccharide, is found to form soft gel by freezing-thawing. DSC studies on water restrained by LBG hydrogels are briefly presented. Thermal characteristic of new type polysaccharide hydrogels obtained by chemically linking in water are also introduced. The above rigid and soft hydrogels are thermally stable regardless of preparation method.

    Glass transitions are commonly observed in many systems including polymers. The glassy states, which could be obtained by cooling liquid states of polymers at high temperature down to lower temperature, show characteristic common properties such as memory and rejuvenation effects. In this paper, we show our recent experimental results including glass transition dynamics of thin polymer films and aging phenomena in polymer glasses after giving an overview of glass transition and glassy dynamics. For thin films of polystyrene, dielectric measurements revealed that the glass transition temperature decreases with decreasing film thickness and the α-relaxation process becomes faster with decreasing film thickness. For poly(methyl methacrylate), aging phenomena have been investigated using dielectric measurements. The memory and rejuvenation effects could be observed for ac-dielectric susceptibility in the temperature cycling mode and are found to be almost the same to those observed in ac-magnetic susceptibility of spin glasses.

    We discuss the recent development of formation of mesoscopic structures and kinetics of morphological transitions in soft matter. Special attention are paid to the so-called interconnected bicontinuous structures such as a gyroid. It is stressed that there are often intermediate metastable structures in the process of the morphological transitions. In particular, we describe Fddd structure and a perforated lamellar structure comparing the experiments of water-surfactant systems and block copolymers. The unsolved future problems are also emphasized.
