    A subclass of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) is protic ionic liquids (PIL) that are composed of onium salts. Acid-base reaction thermodynamics in PILs have been investigated by means of potentiometric and calorimetric titrations. In a typical PIL, ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), autoprotolysis was found to be established, which is generally observed in amphoteric molecular solvents such as water. The thermodynamic parameters of autoprotolysis revealed a drastic change in the reaction mechanism in comparison to that in water. This also affects on the acid-dissociation reaction mechanism of CH3COOH in EAN, while pKa of CH3COOH in EAN is not so largely different from that in water due to the enthalpy-entropy compensation. In water-EAN mixtures, thermodynamic parameters of autoprotolysis vary depending linearly on the mole fraction at moderate molar ratio. This might be concerned with nearly ideal mixing of water and EAN. In case of PILs consist of a weak acid and a weak base, the species distribution formed in the mixture was estimated by calorimetric titration. It was revealed that less than a half of Mim (N-methlyimidazole) and CH3COOH are ionized in an equimolar mixture, forming HMim+ and CH3COO- . This combination cannot be classified into a PIL.

    Iron-based superconductors were discovered in 2008 as the second series of high-Tc superconductors. These materials have the layered structure, which is similar to cuprate superconductors. However, the pairing mechanism is considered to be different from each other. For iron-based superconductors, the pressure dependences of Tc are significantly large. It is indicated that the electronic property of these materials is very sensitive to the local structure around Fe atom from the extensive experimental and theoretical studies. Then it may be possible that the large pressure effects for superconducting properties are due to the high sensitivity of the local structure to the pressure. In this manuscript, the recent results of electrical and structural studies under high pressure are reported. The recent developments of high pressure technique including thermal measurements are also introduced.

    This paper describes the application of various types of calorimeter to the performance evaluation of cement. In addition, the systematic quality control systems of cement by using of various types of calorimeter are proposed. This system is combined to apparatus for measurement of heat liberation at very early hydration, conduction calorimeter for early hydration of cement, sandwich type conduction calorimeter and adiabatic calorimeter for small samples. The very early hydration of cement is related to the fluidity of cement paste. The change of fluidity with elapsed time is related to the early hydration of cement contact with water for 60min. is based on the content of Ca3Al2O6. The new type apparatus was developed for measurement of very early hydration of cement. Conduction calorimeter was used widely to check the retardation or irregular setting of cement. Sandwich type conduction calorimeter was developed for time-interval measurement of many samples. The evaluating test for adiabatic temperature rise in concrete is not adequate for daily quality control because it requires considerable labor. In order to establish a convenient method for the evaluation of adiabatic temperature rise using about 30 cm3 of mortar sample only, we produced an adiabatic calorimeter experimentally. The combination of various types of calorimeter to the performance evaluation of cement is useful for the quality control of cement with various by-products as raw materials.

    Japanese industrial standard of test methods for thermal properties of rubbers and plastics are summarized. The testing methods for transition temperatures, heat of transitions, and specific heat capacity of plastics and glass transition temperature of rubber by DSC are outlined. The testing methods of plastics and determination of the composition of vulcanizates and uncured compounds by TG are outlined. The repeatability and reproducibility using these methods are shown.
