    Recent advance of study of phase equilibria of polymer solutions is reviewed. Thermodynamical conditions of phase equilibria at constant temperature and pressure, originally given by Gibbs, are very rigorously applied to the solutions of polymer, consisting of super-multicomponents having the same chemical structure and the different molecular weight. The theories, in which the concentration and the molecular weight-dependences of the polymer-solvent interaction parameter χ were reasonably taking into account, were established. The systematic computer experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of the starting polymer molecular characteristics and the phase separation conditions on the characteristics of the phase equilibria, the critical solution points, cloud point curves, the binodal and spinodal curves of the multicomponent polymer-single solvent system (quasi-binary solution) and of the multicomponent polymer-binary solvents mixture system (quasi-ternary solution). The reliability of the experiments was confirmed by comparing with actual experiments. It was shown that the entropy parameter φ can be evaluated, by considering the concentration dependence of χ parameter, from the critical point data and φ values thus obtained were in good agreement with those from the temperature dependence of the second virial coefficient A2 in vicinity of the Flory temperature. Occurrence of co-solvency was theoretically predicted by the theory of quasi-ternary solutions.

    The excess enthalpy of polymeric glasses was determined by the use of a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The obtained values of excess enthalpy were used for analyzing the enthalpy relaxation process. From the relationship between enthalpy relaxation time and excess enthalpy, the relaxation times at zero (τ0) and infinite (τ) annealing time were obtained. At glass transition temperature (Tg), the activation energy calculated from τ showed a good agreement of that from WLF equation. In order to compare the rate of enthalpy relaxation, the relaxation time at half of initial excess enthalpy (τ1/2) was employed. The effects of primary and secondary structures on the enthalpy relaxation process of polymeric glasses were analyzed quantitatively. It was concluded that the enthalpy relaxation in polymeric glasses proceeded as a result of a cooperative segmental motion of a few or less than 10 repeating units. The effect of enthalpy relaxation on the physical properties of polymeric glasses were estimated. The mechanical properties of polymeric glasses, such as Young's modulus, tensile strength and the deformation form were found to be affected by the molecular mobility and the deformation rate. It was found that the diffusion process was affected by the enthalpy relaxation of polymeric glasses, due to the control of molecular mobility and the stability of glassy structure which occurred with enthalpy relaxation.

    Recent thermodynamic studies of crystalline p-polyphenyls are described. The properties of the twist transitions of biphenyl, p-terphenyl and p-quaterphenyl are discussed in relation to the internal flexibility. The crossover of the low temperature heat capacities of biphenyl and p-terphenyl is attributed to the greater twisting flexibility of biphenyl molecule on the basis of lattice dynamics calculations. The role of the incommensurability is discussed about the abnormally large heat capacities of biphenyl at low temperatures. The thermodynamic properties are also discussed of other related substances (4, 4'-difluorobiphenyl, p, p'-biphenol, perfluorobiphenyl and perchlorobiphenyl).

    A history of space development is briefly reviewed in point of thermal phenomena. The cause of an accident of Space Shuttle Challenger on January 28, 1986 is introduced as the loss of sealing functions of a seal of a solid rocket booster at a low temperature. A new Space Transportation System using a space shuttle is described as an international cooperation program. Energy balances of spacecrafts during a mission are analyzed thermally from lift-off to landing. The heat-resistant materials of spacecrafts including silica tiles of space shuttle orbiter are criticized for the use. Materials processing at a microgravity environment is predicted as a very interesting field to the materials science and life science. The utilization of space lab in this field is emphasized by introducing SL-1 project of NASA/ESA in November, 1983. First Materials Processing Test of Japanese Government is reviewed precisely.
