    Shape memory alloys are one of the new functional materials and they have a unique property which shows the shape recovery phenomena by heating after deformation. Many applications using shape memory effect are developing. TiNi shape memory alloy has excellent material properties among shape memory alloys. These shape memory effects are caused by thermoelastic martensitic transformation and reverse transformation.
    The phase transformation temperatures in TiNi shape memory alloy were measured by adiabatic method, DSC and DTA. These temperatures were affected by many factors, such as Ni concentration, thermal cycling and substitution of Ni by third elements. Tini shape memory alloy transformed from martensite phase to parent phase by heating after solution treatment. By thermal cycling or substitution of Ni by third elements, intermediate phase was observed between martensite phase and parent phase. By heating, the CsCl type ordered structure of TiNi parent phase changed to the BCC disordered structure at high temperature.

    A thermometric method based on the temperature transfer principle has been developed for use in adiabatic low-temperature calorimeters. Temperature difference between the sample and a thermometric block is detected by a thermocouple and the temperature of the latter is regulated to follow that of the former as close as possible by a sensitive thermal servomechanism. The temperature thus tranferred to the thermometric block is measured with a resistance thermometer. Temperature resolution attained is ±0.027mK at 300K, ±0.062mK at 80K, and ±0.20mK at 20K. The thermometric method combines the accuracy of the conventionalresistance thermometry and the small size of the thermocouple junction and is best suitable for application in small-sample calorimeters. An example of calorimetric results obtained with a calorimeter employing the temperature transfer thermometry is presented.

    A critical review on absolute hydration enthalpies of ions derived by various methods is presented. Definitions on absolute and conventional hydration enthalpies are presented. Values based on the TATB extrathermodynamic hypothesis, those from electrochemical methods, those from gas phase thermodynamic measurements on ion-water molecule association, those from computer simulations, and those based on a physical model for hydrated ion clusters, are discussed. Thermochemical studies on tetra-alkylammonium halides carried out by the authors are briefly summarized in relation to the present topic.
