Test construction of CFRD (Concrete Face Rockfill Dam) began at the upstream-side secondary cofferdam of the Tokuyama Dam in the fall of 2000. Concrete slab placing was conducted during a period from March through June 2002. Thermocouples were horizontally installed into the 0.3 m thick slab and the temperatures were measured. In addition, strain gages were horizontally and perpendicularly installed in the slab, and strain in the slab was measured. Based on the measurement records, thermal stress in the slab was analyzed and major factors causing cracks in the concrete slab of CFRD were examined.

When the gates are being installed near the river mouth, not only the flow-induced vibration, but also the dynamic effects by wave action are very important factors in construction. Usually these gates are designed as the double leaf wheel gate which has an upper and a lower gate. Particularly when the upper gate is installed at the sea side and the lower gate is positioned at the river side on a long span double gate, the upper gate has problems such as the vibrations by large uplift pressure due to wave action related with the structural problems. For this situation it is important to examine the dynamic effects of wave action on the gate. In this report, the results of dynamic response analysis of the upper gate are presented, when impulsive uplift pressure and periodically fluctuating pressure by the wave act. And the method to derive the dynamic deflection, the dynamic bending moment and the dynamic shearing force is proposed for dynamic structural analysis of the gate.

Volcanic eruption activities of Unzen Fugen-Dake resumed for the first time in 198 years in November 1990. Pyroclastic flows and debris flows took 44 valuable human lives and inflicted destructive damages to houses, fields, forests and public facilities. Restoration have started since 1993 as a national project with implementation of sabo dykes and training dykes starting from the river downstream. This paper reports on the results of construction of a steel slit dam as a part of sabo dam which was carried out using an unmanned construction system.

Proper management of fill works for core and filter layers is vital for fill dam construction. The system which has been developed for improvement of fill management aims at tracing the track of compacted rollers thus allowing a real time confirmation of the performance of roller compaction works which can be utilized as a record to be used as an evidence to any third parties. The system also reduces the number of operation required by roller operators. This paper reports on the development of a management system for core and filter layer compaction management at Ogura Dam and its effectiveness on site.
