As far as the authors are concerned, present college students are exclusively memorizing what they learn in class, solving mathematical equations and taking examinations. Students' failure to acquire science-oriented mind on their own is considered one of the problems involved in today's classroom-based education. College students have been failing to understand the importance of mastering subject content by grasping the substance of natural phenomena. The authors have been conducting field investigations with students on slope disasters during heavy rain or an earthquake for the past decade. As a result, we believe that field investigations are a means of nurturing science-oriented mind in students. This paper describes the significance and position of out-of-campus education including field investigations.
The Strength of Materials comprises not only mechanics of solids, which are not limited to elastic deformation, but also materials testing. Because the students who belong to the author's department have little knowledge about the materials' characteristics, they imagine that this subject is difficult. In this paper, it is discussed how to make the students understand the essential and some important points of this subject. For students in college of technology, the author points out that the lecture concentrating on the elastic deformation of solid members is most important and that the basic mathematics used in this subject must be explained once again early in this lesson.
This paper describes a Project Based Learning with ‘Mechamo’ and its educative effect. ‘Mechamo’ is a remote control robot which has complex link mechanisms. A new simulation game is proposed, which simulates industrial manufacture in a factory. This simulation game is a group work. A group is composed of several persons and each group is a ‘quality control circles’ of the factory. They learn importance of skill of mechanics and control engineering through the manufacturing and history of ‘Mechamo’. A group leader is elected from the group. They learn a sense of responsibility and importance of skill of ‘technological communication’. A specific case and effectiveness are shown.
A PBL Education for 2nd year students in chemical engineering in faculty of Engineering Science of Osaka University is being achieved mainly focusing on the spontaneous setting of the project theme. The PBL program includes the lecture of communication literacy and skill, group discussion and presentation, and mutual assessment of the students. The PBL program was overviewed here from the practical viewpoint.
A practical education in cooperation with the local industries has been introduced into the curricula of Shizuoka Institute of Science and Technology since 1999. This program is usually referred to as the Internship. This paper presents the discussion about the preparation, the organization and the results of the internship program conducted in 2003. This is the SIST's fourth full-scale program following the preliminary trial in 1999. Fifty-two companies in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture joined this plan by providing their own internship programs for over one-hundred students. Seventy-eight students participated in these programs and obtained varied experiences. Recent five-years' results of this program are summarized and the future prospect of this program is also presented.
This paper describes a trial on the education of introductory physical mathematics for undergraduate students. A new lecture style has been introduced in a subject for freshmen at the civil engineering department of Kanazawa University. The lectures on several important concepts in physical mathematics are carefully selected and explained by using a variety of examples in civil engineering applications. The results of students' questionnaire show that the use of practical materials in the class has successfully enhanced the learning motivation of the students. In addition, it is also confirmed that through the lectures the students have well understood the effectiveness of the physical mathematics as a practical tool in various engineering processes.
A simple system that assists to share lecture information between teachers and students was constructed on the Web site. Because it is not realistic to construct the Web site in order to supply the lecture information or the lecture materials by every teacher, an easy use environment is constructed newly. There are many commercial systems, but they have the complexity by too many functions, and the high cost. The main functions of the system are the web syllabus system, the download site of lecture materials, and the message board. And the system has simple user interface as all the teachers are able to use it. The questionnaire was carried out to both teachers and students. And the questionnaire results show that the unified way to access the lecture information and the simple operational flexibility are evaluated.
Learning and education aims of the Fukui National College of Technology are “Ability rearing of the manufacturing, the environment coordinating and the system design with the engineer ethics of the global viewpoint”, and they practice educating engineer. What becomes the key subject are “Engineer ethics” and “Global environment”. We report the practiced content and the educational result in the inside which is of two subjects in charge. Development of engineer's “Human Performance” is being required to respond to various changes. “Human Performace” is defined as an ability of putting own knowledge and skill to a practical issue. Current engineering undergraduate education promotes to learn this ability. To examine effectiveness of the educational program, a questionnaire consisting of 66 items was developed and the survey was conducted across eight universities. As results, most students recognize importance of the ability, but their achievement is lower for English communication skill and adaptation of cultural difference. They learned the ability on laboratory experience for their thesis, experiment class, club activities, part-time jobs and other activities.
