PDE council has been active in The Japan Federation of Engineering Societies. It has 36 member societies and is preparing the system for all the engineers in industry that can provide the information of continuing education held by universities, professional societies, public institutes and private companies. It plans to assure the quality of continuing education subjects by selecting them according to its requirements. And each engineer can decide his home engineering society where the continuing education history is kept by exchanging the education records through PDE system.
Despite the revitalization of the Japanese economy, Japan's status as a technologically creative country in the 21st century is still not tangibly and firmly established. Utilizing my 45 years of experience, I have been talking recently to young engineers about monozukuri bushido, or samurai spirit. In order to strengthen Japanese monozukuri capability, I strongly believe in the need for the development of monozukuri professionals in cooperation with industry, academia and government.
Quick globalization makes people study thinking and way of life of other people. For this, studying liberal arts is inevitable for everybody. However, motivation to study liberal arts among young generation in high school as well as in university is shrinking. This comes from relaxation of entrance examination to university, due to decreasing competition of decreasing number of candidates. This paper deals with compensating lack of liberal arts as well as common knowledge during life long learnig study. The author proposes an idea of enhancing general knowledge by reading different kind of books which intensifies and widens the interest and curiosity of individual.
A variety of biomedical technologies are being developed that can be used for purposes other than treating diseases. Such “enhancement technologies” can be used to improve our own and future generation's life-chances. While these technologies can help people in many ways, their use raises important ethical issues. Some arguments for anti-enhancement as well as pro-enhancement seem to rest, however, on shaky foundation. Both company engineers and the general public had better learn more from technological, economical and philosophical histories. For such subjects may provide engineers with less opportunities of technological misuses and more powers of self-esteem in addition to self-control.
In this paper, the results of a preliminary survey on MOT conducted by a questionnaire are described so as to better deploy MOT education for SoC development engineers working for client companies of a consortium company established by eleven major Japanese semiconductor manufacturers. An overview of assessments of MOT is given, and the current state of MOT education supported by the consortium is documented, and a specific deployment plan is suggested.
This paper describes the current status of SoC design education programs in Japanese universities promoted by STARC that is a consortium established by major semiconductor manufacturers in Japan. In the first place, this paper introduces outline of education plans executed under the ASUKA Project promoted by those manufacturers and STARC. In the next section, the abstract of the SoC design courses carried out in the Japanese universities supported by STARC are described, followed by the details of text development and revisions as well as the deployment to the client company engineers. Finally, the education plans in the ASUKA II Project for the next 5 years are introduced.
The Silicon Sea Belt Fukuoka Project was pushed forward in Fukuoka Prefecture in 2001 and has promoted human resource development of System LSI design engineers. Under liaising of industry, academia and government, “College of System LSI, Fukuoka” was founded and QUBE (Q-shu University hardware/software Borderless system design Education program) has been started aiming to establish education system for working engineers. In this paper, results of our challenge and future prospects are described.

The development of embedded software has recently been increasing among many companies. This situation carries the need for training of more embedded software engineers. The Nagoya University provides reeducation of embedded software engineers in the working world. We divide the engineer into four classes by technical capabilities and a career. We developed nine educational courses. These extension courses are short intensive courses on training embedded software engineers. The manager is demanding not only theory but skill training strongly in a subordinate's education. We are tackling many exercises, in order to improve an embedded software engineer's skill. We record the number of times of key operation which students performs into exercises, and analyze exercises.
Software development for embedded systems such as cellular phone and digital TV systems has become larger in scale while development times have become shorter. More over, the necessary technologies are required to respond more rapidly in line with movements in the sales climate for these products. In such a business environment, skill enhancement for software engineers is highly important. In this paper, we explain a tailor-made education system based on skill standards.
By the progress of digitalization, software has come to have big influence on development of the embedded system such as electronic equipments and control devices. Increasing a software engineer, the improvement of technical skill, and training of the project leader have been the main subjects which should be tackled immediately by expansion of the scope of software, and increase of an application scale. This paper describes the concept of the software education system for software engineers in the Mitsubishi Electric group. It reports on the outline and the result about the software freshman training course and the software project leader training course newly constructed based on this concept.
This paper describes the research regarding to the project management education effort in Hitachi, comprehensive electrical machinery enterprise. The project management education system has been offered to the following 4 ranks; project staffs, project leaders, project managers, and program managers. The contents of these courses include knowledge, capability, and application. This paper is proposing the spiral model education system to educate all 4 courses. This spiral model has the revolving function for the rank-up and the repeated enhancing function. This spiral model has following 4 steps, the member analysis, education, evaluation and applications. The business and the education have been coordinated to achieve a success of project. This paper also describes the contents and its importance of the project member evaluation.
NEC Learning Ltd. has developed “Check on e” , web-based examination system. The purpose is to check basic knowledge of young engineers engaged in development of electronic equipments, like digital electronic household appliances, which Japan has some favorable potential. We describe first, benefits and characteristics of “Check on e” . Utilizing this web-based test, young engineers are able to diagnose their advantages and weaknesses. Furthermore, since “Check on e” system sets questions randomly from the database of triple questions of those in actual test, it has sure ability to evaluate result of training or education. Finally, we show some examples on electric circuit field and LSI design (System on a Chip) field, and navigation system to introduce education after taking this examination.
DENSO Engineering & Technical Skills Training Center Corporation was established in 2001 for engineering education and technical skills training. Based on three key concepts, we have fundamentally reformed the engineering education system in accordance with change of times.
We developed technical communication education from beginning to managerial levels to enhance communication skills necessary for engineers. The courses in this program progressed from theory to hands-on training and discussion, providing an opportunity for fact-finding and problem-solving. After the courses were completed, the engineers applied what they had learned on the job. The courses proved to be useful, satisfying participating engineers.
We think 'human resources and technology' is developed only by self-training continuously, keeping higher motivation and practicing repeatedly. Moreover it is indispensable for sustainable development of company. Management vision, top-down message with vertical communication, and bottom-up systematic approaches are necessary for sustainable human resource development, sharing the value with coordination, and in addition, OJT and Off-JT method should be used effectively. This paper shows TEPCO's attempts to develop engineers' technical skills as a reference of a in-company continuing professional development.
This paper presents unique measures in education for engineers at Nippon Koei, an engineering consultant firm. For past four years, Nippon Koei has been seeking to enhance the technical capability of its engineers by supporting professional development and stressing access to personnel and technical information. The new supporting measures include in-house CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programs, training seminars for preparing a personnel Career Vision and Action Plan, support for acquiring professional certification, talented individuals exchange program and career monitoring. A company-wide knowledge and information platform has been established to facilitate information distribution and sharing. As a result of the measures, number and proportion of professional engineer have been on the increase.
The purpose of Embedded Technology Skill Standards (ETSS) is strengthening of the development power for embedded software. ETSS systematically arranges the skill required of the engineer and the manager.
