A role of communication among project stakeholders in project execution is significant, sometimes it makes a project with bad. General speaking, most Japanese think that communication between Japanese is easy, because we are living in relatively homogenized sense of value. In my experience, I have opposite opinion, because most Japanese don't study communication theory and practical training. For example, when they ask something to someone, they never offer their request clearly, because of expecting him to understand context of the request. This is typical way of Japanese communication. I recommend if you want to be good communicator, you have to think what is your mission, your purpose and your goal, prior to ask your request to someone. It is self-evident that unclear request never lead to proper results. There is some difficulty on communication in our society as high context culture.
Companies want more business-minded industrial technology managers and engineers with entrepreneurial skills who also have an awareness of the challenges of global marketplace. Both the Master of Engineering and Management Degree (MEM) and the Master of Management of Technology Degree (MOT) aim to meet the needs of industry by offering managers and engineers the critical skills need to be successful in a professional career. The world today is characterized by an ever-growing number of contacts resulting in communication between people in industry with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This communication takes place because of contacts within the areas of business, engineering, technology, science, and education but also because of immigration brought about by labor shortage or political conflicts. In all these contacts, there is communication, which needs to be as constructive as possible, without misunderstandings and breakdowns. Knowledge on the nature of linguistic and cultural similarities and differences can play a positive and constructive role. The objective of this paper is to examine what makes the difference in communication between people with diverse cultural background. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of diversity management and diversity leadership in the diverse workplace.
Quick globalization increases the necessity of higher communication skill for everybody. However, in reality, modern tools such as mobile and internet spoil the face-to-face communication ability among young people. In this paper, reviewing related books of communication skill in conjunction with speaking, hearing, reading and writing is first done on English as well as on Japanese. Parallel to this, self experience-based method for intensifying communication skill is described. Emphasizing points for improving each communication skill are concretely proposed in the body.

“The Educational Program for Raising Creative Engineers by Thorough Training of Japanese Communication Ability” of Okayama University was adopted in 2004 as Support Program for Distinctive University Education (Characteristic Good Practice) by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan. To educate the effective Japanese communication ability of the students, it is indispensable to write the large quantity compositions spending time sufficiently. This paper reports that the excellent educational effects can be achieved through the thorough training of Japanese communication ability.
In this paper, the contents of the teaching materials of the Technical Communication (TC) course, which has been continued from 1994 at Kogakuin University, and the educational effects obtained by this course are explained. The TC is a method to communicate the technical information in order to understand easily. In this course, we used newspaper articles concerning rule of sports as the teaching materials and explained a cause of the accidents published in the newspaper from viewpoint of the ambiguity of Japanese. As a result, it is recognized that using newspapers as the teaching materials are effective to understand the TC and this course is necessary for students. It is concluded that our trial brought educational effects a great deal.
The importance of presentation skills rapidly increases in engineering education in Japan. The authors have applied various teaching-method of presentation skills to the course of graduation research for the fifth-grade students of the mechanical engineering program in Yonago National College of Technology. The lectures including teachers' demonstration and basic skills in presentation have resulted in improvement of students' skills. The meeting for announcing the results of graduation research has been opened to the public in cooperation with the Yonago Chamber of Commerce and Industry to give the students incentives to graduation research as well as presentation. The students have mutually evaluated their presentation to get good opportunities for even self-evaluation. This paper discusses the effects and problems of our educational practice.
The purpose of this research is to make it clear that the actual condition and its effect on education of “Machizukuri demonstration” by the laboratory of university as a communication opportunity. Through the analysis on the “Dreamy Market” which was held in Ohno Village of Iwate prefecture, it became clear that three kinds of communications were happened on the Machizukuri demonstration. First, it is a communication between residents and local government that is necessary for making a town plan and implementing a project. Second, it is a communication between residents who share the space of the demonstration and the students who plan it. Third, it is a communication between residents and a town tourist. The communication on the Machizukuri demonstration has some effect of the Machizukuri education for both of the students and the residents.
In the Center for Innovation and Creativity Development, we have planned students' project activities and have found out various educational subjects by guiding the members of projects. Particularly, we have regarded “raising the capability to make plans” as an essential subject. The lack of the capability causes various problems in project activities, and communications skills are also affected. This tendency is observed in all the projects, though the students of science and liberal arts have participated in the projects. We have taken the measure against students' lack of the capability, and have opened a course of liberal arts new for the freshmen based on the knowledge. We will introduce the measure in the lecture and discuss the communications skills as the one side of capability to make plans.
Science communication is a type of communication that occurs between scientists/engineers and the general public. It has many variations ; however all of these are characterized by the fact that they take place outside of the normal social context and require an explicit form of participation if the communication is to occur. There are two categories of science communication : communication as an extension of an institutional conversation and communication as a conversation in more contingent circumstances. It is necessary to train people involved in science/engineering in both of these approaches. This paper demonstrates the latest attempt to provide science communication training at Tokyo Institute of Technology and discusses the significance of both approaches.
This paper describes a course in Japanese language instruction for first year students in the Department of Applied Chemistry, Okayama University. The course is part of a guidance program and consists of (1) technical writing in Japanese for science students, (2) experimental report writing, and (3) project-based learning through chemistry experiments.
A new course entitled “Mechanical Engineering Seminar” has begun in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mie University. This course consists of three parts, a teamwork seminar, a creative design seminar and a comprehensive achievement examination. Its aim is to foster a broad social and international outlook, ethical thinking, autonomy, partnership, leadership, presentation ability, originality, overall creativity in students, and to help them become aware of their real ability. The teaching method used in this seminar is based on problem-based learning (PBL) , and pro-active student participation is required. The purpose of this paper is to report the features, teaching method and educational effectiveness of the teamwork seminar, which seeks to educate students with a broad, diversified outlook. The results of a student questionnaire show that these new fields of study stimulate students' will to learn, and they express general satisfaction with the seminar.
The important abilities for which the young engineers are required are creativity, ability for solving a problem and presentation ability. However, the education curriculum for creation of products in the present university has the contents that the students in each group only make a product, so that they can not learn how to raise above-mentioned three abilities. In the faculty of engineering, University of Toyama, a new subject “creative engineering exercise” opened to all courses and grades students has started in 2004. The authors reexamined the subject, and then the improved new subject “creative engineering exercise” that can meet the requirements from society has started in 2005. The feature of this new subject is that the lectures are adopted in the subject in order to learn how to raise above-mentioned creativity, ability for solving a problem and presentation ability. This paper described how to learn ability for solving a problem.
