    In this paper, the qualities and characteristics required from an engineer who works globally are discussed based on my own experience of a joint research project with a European company. The most important qualities and characteristics are integrity, one′s own initiative, basic and expert knowledge, creativity, communicative skills and broad world view. Having initiative seems to be especially significant but is a weak point of young engineers in Japan at present. Ways to develop students′ initiative are discussed in detail from a view point of the engineering education.

    A recent report by the Ministry of Education and Science has pointed out the importance of the Liberal Arts in the College Education. Based on some of the suggestions in the report this article retrospect to the relationship of the Engineering Education and the Liberal Arts in earlier days of modern Japan, then prospect the futuristic relationship between the tow educational category.

    The human race came to expect the engineer′s international activity by an international extension of the risk. The engineer should provide with “Overall ability” and “Independent ability” to answer the demand of the society. The engineer ethics education is effective to the acquisition of the ability that the society demands. Because the engineer ethics education teaches the engineer to develop “Ethics action as the individual” to “Ethics activity as the enterprise” . In the point of development of the comprehensive capacity, it can be said that the engineer ethics education is training that supports the action power that accomplishes the social responsibility. However, it is easy to make the engineer ethics education a polite fiction. Then, we propose to take the safety problem to the ethics education for the prevention of making to the polite fiction of the education.

    Some studies and experiments for “A Collaboration of Science and Art” were reviewed to consider the role of art in engineering education. And then, the necessity to think better of value of beauty in the aim of engineering was discussed. In Conclusion, art is like a communication tool to bridge between science/engineering and its surrounding world.

    Examining curriculum among universities revealed that no significant difference in math class or related subjects can be seen. However, amount and depth of those studies, in general, differed depending on content of curriculum and the level of achievement at entrance to individual university. Universalization of higher education shows that students have many problems in learning higher level of traditional math and that the memory of math they learned quickly fades away after passing in exam. It means that further development of higher math knowledgebased engineer after graduation from universities. Under these circumstances, the present author, as one of fun of math, propose how to maintain way of thinking generated by math knowledge. What necessary for engineer is to pay attention to common books, dealing with elementary mathematics or arithmetic- related matters. This surely leads engineer to nourish math/arithmetic knowledge-based way of thinking.

    We will discuss the connectivity of educational systems in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering in the University of Tokyo. Students entering the University of Tokyo are enrolled for the first two years in the College of Arts and Sciences, since specialized instruction should be erected on top of broad knowledge and understanding. The University is offering several new types of lecture such as Global Focus on Knowledge (Lecture series where leading scholars in several fields overview sciences mainly for freshmen) in order to lead freshmen into the broad and systematic “structuring of knowledge” . The Faculty of Engineering also tries several new series of (teaching) courses, for example, Knowledge Structuring, Engineering Minimum Lecture Series, MONOZUKURI Experiment, English Language Lessons etc., together with Electrical Syllabi System with MIMASearch.

    The object of this paper is to provide some suggestions about the technological innovation science temporal lecture in Nagoya Institute of Technology in 2005. It was a unique lecture in terms of the following 3 points : 1) The lecture was not designed for graduated students of MOT course but for bachelor students in engineering. 2) The lecture was based on the case studies from history of Japanese industrial technology. 3) The lecture was focused on studying the vested or basic technology caused the technological innovation. It was shown that the lecture was useful for the students as an introduction of MOT and it also promoted a better understanding of manufacturing basic knowledge and engineers′ ethics.

    The basic program of general education of engineers is based on European culture from the times of ancient Greece to the 20th century. However, when considering its results, such as colonialism and the World Wars, this system can be said to lack the most important goal of “culture,” which is “to accept the existence of others.” In particular, the cooperation of European culture and engineering has ravaged the weaker cultures and is currently causing severe environmental problems in nature. Therefore, when considering the general education of engineers, it is indispensable to doubt European scholarship and to analyze what is lacking in current Japanese educational programs. Then, it is desirable that the relationship between the mind and the body, the characteristics of the Japanese climate, and the essence of Japanese artisanship be taken into consideration. It may also be beneficial to study the Ainu culture for its qualities as a peaceful culture.

    This paper discusses contents and results of a new graduate course “English for Engineers and Scientists” given at School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo. This course is a new attempt to develop English communication expertise for engineering graduate students: how to write technical papers and how to make technical presentations in English. For these purposes, differences in the writing styles and in the sentence structures of English and Japanese are stressed: conclusions come first in English versus conclusions come last in Japanese; the three-step style of introduction, body, and conclusion in English versus the four-step style of ki-sho-ten-ketsu in Japanese. In addition, proper styles of technical papers (rhetoric) and related grammatical points are discussed. Technical presentation course consists of four-week lecture and seven-week practice session. In the lecture, essential points of technical presentations in English are discussed in detail, and in the practice session students′ presentation skills are improved through guidance and instructions given by native-speaker moderators. The class evaluation results show that most students have obtained necessary skills of technical presentation, indicating that the combined course of lecture and practice session is essential for training students to make better technical presentations in English.

    The purpose of this study is to introduce a writer′s opinion about the ability of Japanese language that engineers should acquire. The writer is a teacher of a college of technology. And this study expresses writer′s opinion by showing own teaching method. The writer thinks that there are no special Japanese only for engineers. This study shows that an ability of Japanese language is not just the ability of reading or presentation, but is the ability combined with ‘reading skill’ , ‘writing skill’ , ‘listening skill’ , and ‘expressing skill’ . Therefore, there is no difference between the Japanese ability of students for engineer and the Japanese ability of students for other majors.

    In an increasingly globalized world, demand for engineers well versed in English remains strong. As a professor of English in the Faculty of Computer Science and Systems Engineering at the Kyushu Institute of Technology, I have sought with the aid of two associate professors to improve the English program for our engineering students together to help meet that very demand. In order to assist other English teachers in similar situations to improve their own English programs, I would like to report on the ideas and methods presently used in our undergraduate English program, specifically the first-year compulsory and common course with its emphasis on paragraph writing which students from each of the five departments within the Faculty of Computer Science and Systems Engineering are required to take. In addition, I would also like to report my ideas and teaching methods for a graduate research paper writing course. The objective of this course is to teach graduate students how to write presentations for conferences and papers for journals at the international level.

    One of the important undertakings of student in laboratory education practiced in higher educational institutions, such as universities, is the development of technical communication skills based on training in technical writing for preparing not only bachelor′s and master′s theses but also papers to be submitted to society journals. However, technical writing is difficult for students who are not trained in writing papers, and it might become a burden for the teaching staff. Considering this situation, we have examined methods that may enhance the technical writing skills of students and also improve the training efficiency of the teaching staff. Specifically, the methods include distributing checklists to students, providing as few corrections as possible using underlines and adding comments when correcting students′ writings, and instructing students to exchange their writings to check each other′s work. In this paper, we summarize and analyze the effects of practicing the above methods on the basis of the answers to a questionnaire provided by students.

    Three years of extensive reading lessons have improved engineering students′ reading and listening skills in English. The average TOEIC score has increased to 441 points, and the relative numbers of students of lower scores than 350 points have decreased to 14% in the third year when the median reading amount of easy-to-read English texts is about a half million words. The critical success factors are the reading amount and the easiness of English texts read especially in the first term. When students read extremely easy English texts with the help of pictures, they can finally avoid the translation into Japanese and grasp the meaning of the texts directly in English
