OpenCourseWare was proposed by MIT in 2001 and launched its web site with five hundred courses in 2003. MIT have paid much effort not only for moving forward their own activity but also for promoting OCW to many institutions all over the world since 2004. Global OCW have grown rapidly under the OpenCourseWare Consortium who has been established as a non-profit organization since 2008 and nowadays more than two hundred and eighty organizations joined the consortium from all over the world. Currently some new challenges have been started in various countries to advance OCW. One of them is creating learners community to share opinions and QA among users who are learning same course. The other is to give certificates to learners who completed the course to admire their learning achievement. In near future Open Education might be the global content infrastructure for life-long education.
Elementary textbooks on quantum chemistry published for the last dozen years in Japan were surveyed. In the most of the textbooks, Heitler-London theory or simple linear atomic combination-molecular orbital theory is still used to explain the nature of the chemical bond of a hydrogen molecule, which theories were criticized in 1960s. Physical meanings on several problems that many students may have questions were not described in these books. Some of the problems were answered in this paper. Desirable textbooks on quantum chemistry which fit with times were proposed.
With the acceleration of the worldwide globalization, the fluidity of the person on the earth scale advances these days. So guaranteeing the quality of the education and coping with diversification of the social need are demanded to the higher education system. Therefore, colleges and universities are introducing the activity utilized their originality and characteristic, and then promoting the educational reform. However, in those activities, the participant is usually limited or it is difficult to evaluate educational effect. In this paper, to contribute to building up an appropriate evaluation model for the team activity, evaluation systems of these activity of our college are presented and estimated; supplementary lesson, creation training, contest, etc.
This paper reports PBL has been implemented in Senior High School, which is conducted with cooperation by university and civil engineering corporations as well. In the recent statement from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, it has been notified that the purpose of students for studying at university has not been specified enough. To respond to this, this class is basically designed upon students’ interests; to foster communication skill, to provoke interest toward Science and Technology and to increase motivation for academic studies and future jobs. Fostering these elements, we conclude that PBL is suitable for senior high school from the survey.
The real world experience of manufacturing processes from an idea stage to a final product must be related to classroom lectures in mechanical engineering curriculum, including design, materials engineering, dynamics and control. Various challenges and difficulties encountered during the manufacturing engineering practice also let students recognize their creativity as well as what kinds of knowledge is missing. Awareness is the start of growth. In line with this principle we have carried out the mechanical engineering practice for 10 years. Some modifications toward “project-based practice” , however, have been made through manufacturing engineers’ real activities. Drawing and specification, process control, cost management, and role-sharing arrangement are stressed during the semester course. The present paper describes how it works and what is left to improve further, such as a refinement of themes and a coaching method for bringing out the hidden talent in students.
The Robotics Course in our Mechanical Systems Engineering Department offers “Robotics Exercise Lessons” as one of its Problem-Solution Based Specialized Subjects. This is intended to motivate students learning and to help them acquire fundamental items and skills on mechanical engineering and improve understanding of Robotics Basic Theory. Our current curriculum was established to accomplish this objective based on two pieces of research in 2005: an evaluation questionnaire on the education of our Mechanical Systems Engineering Department for graduates and a survey on the kind of human resources which companies are seeking and their expectations for our department. This paper reports the academic results and reflections of job search support in recent years as inherited and developed from the previous curriculum.
A simplified engine lathe simulator for junior level students in manufacturing practice has been developed. This simulator is a system consisting of a control unit having an operation handle in each 3 axes and PC. The cost to make the control unit is quite low and it is easy to construct the system. Almost all lathe operations including screw thread cutting, knurling and measuring the workpiece dimensions are possible on this simulator. The lathe work simulation was conducted for 220 students divided into 8 groups using 15 simulators. Questionnaire surveys to students showed that the practice using the simulator was effective to understand the lathe work and the operation technique.
In order to improve students’ motivation, the SIEM (School of Information Environment Method) which is the education method for the introduction of the computer programming education was developed. We focus on students’ motivation, and we have measured students’ motivation as the educational effects. After the SIEM was developed in the School of Information Environment, it applied to introduction to the computer programming education in the School of Engineering Evening Division at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. It is effective for the improvement of students’ motivation. By adding the Customer Satisfaction Analysis to the SIEM Analysis, it was able to clarify the priority level of the SIEM assessment item. In this paper, we describe results of the Customer Satisfaction Analysis.
The comparative analysis of the prior art search was made using the training program which National Center for Industrial Property Information and Training performs. The correct answer rate was high when longer years of experience, experiences such as search/retrieval in charge or database. Depending on a technical field, there was the feature according to consideration of search/retrieval or timing of doing prior art search. The improvement in skill of the prior art search according to a technical field and the personnel training for it are important as a premise for protecting valuable invention and performing the practical use. The comparative analysis beyond technical fields is needed.
The lectures are taken, making use of the textbook of the same contents, for high school students in Japan, students at Yamagata University and at Korea Maritime University in Korea. I’ ll find the similarity and difference, by comparing vertical and horizontal relations among three groups. As a result, I can find the directionality of cultivating human resources of doing well in the global society. I think there is “Matrix Thinking Frame” as one of the effective countermeasures for fostering men of ability. It is possible to part from conventional passiveness type education, according to planning and practicing one’ s “Life Management Plan” by using this system. The case where one’ s capability has been extended appears in students, as above mentioned.
We have carried out a teamwork exercise in which a PIC micro-controller is used. The exercise is designed on a key concept that we emphasize on teamwork and student’ s ideas that realize a unique performance of the PIC micro-controller. For this concept we devised exercise equipments, a method of presentation of the results, and evaluation procedure of grades. A hand-made circuit and a breadboard are used so that students can start to make circuits by themselves. Students make presentation of their result operating their circuit and program. We evaluate the grades emphasis on the ideas rather than techniques and knowledge. We also examine circuit elements that the students can use in the exercise. Our experience shows that less circuit elements make more various ideas of a circuit and a program.
This paper reports that the learning experience for a group working disassembling and assembling an internal combustion engine is constructed for a group working. At the same time, the environment education combined with basic studies is introduced with the aid of a Diesel engine running with biofuel. It is found that (1) the leaning experience enhances the leaning motivation and problem solution ability for students, (2) a group working disassembling and assembling an internal combustion engine is effective for greediness for learning, and (3) the environmental study attracts student.
