The research activity of engineering area in Japan shows a downward trend in recent years. Under the present circumstances, engineering education becomes more important. Graduate attributes form a set of individually assessable outcomes that are the components indicative of the graduate′s potential to acquire competence to practise at the appropriate level. Graduate attributes of the Washington Accord (WA) include the importance of research. A new trend of engineering education with engineering design, interdisciplinarity and teamworking is introduced. The sense of research in engineering area is essential in engineering design education.

Niigata Prefecture is long from north to south, therefore its gastronomic culture is also various. The daylight hours of summer are long and suitable for rice cultivation. Since there is little temperature variability during winter, it is suitable for carrying out fermentation management of “Moromi” . Water within the prefecture has few minerals, and is fit for the low-temperature long-term fermentation of the Niigata sake conjointly with the climate condition. The Niigata sake brewed under such conditions - “TANREI” - it is expressed that it is the quality of sake. The new food “Sakasuke” which fermented sake lees with abundant nutrition in lactic acid bacteria was developed. This “Sakasuke” had the action which stops the allergic rhinitis-like symptoms of a mouse, and the lipid improvement action of a rat. Now, Niigata sake breweries are performing product development which uses “Sakasuke” , and a cake, liqueur, sweet drink made from fermented rice, and curry are already marketed.

Lecture on Engineering ethics has widely been brought to engineering education. In many cases, group work also becomes a part of curriculum in engineering ethics. However, it is difficult to evaluate the educational effect of group work for a few hours. Therefore, we conducted the questionnaires about images of Engineering ethics based on Semantic differential method before and after group work. Then, we evaluated the changes in attitudes of students from the changes of images for engineering ethics. In this paper, we analyze the image of the engineering ethics with principal component analysis. The changes of student’ s attitudes are also analyzed on image profile.

This paper is to explain the architectural paper crafts developed by the author. In addition, the educational effect on the elementary education with architectural paper crafts based on the result of the questionnaire on “workshops” for pupils in the neighbouring areas held from 2010 to 2012 is discussed. The majority of the feedback is such that it is fun although it is not easy;however, I also received others including the joy to be able to make a three-dimensional model from a sheet of paper and the future intention to become an architect. The possibility of architectural education is expanded, and the educational effect on the elementary education is fully recognized.

The Graduate School of Engineering, Utsunomiya University introduced a PBL program for Master’ s Degree course students in 2008. A team consists of four to six students from different departments, thus, they have different technical backgrounds. They are expected to exercise skills and apply their specialized knowledge to the problem of their own choice, regardless of their major subjects in their departments. Senior engineers from various industries act as technical advisers for students, and give advices and comments on the progress and management of the project and the student team. In this program students are organized into groups of six students from different major fields, and are expected to find a technical or social challenge to solve, and declare a project on it. The program is effective to cultivate students motivation and leadership, and to give opportunities to experience to exercise problem-finding and problem-solving skills.

It’ s significant for students in faculty of technology to experience whole process of development consisting planning, product designing, prototyping, testing, implementing and final testing. But in recent years, there are non-negligible disparities of ability and skill among students, and these disparities make the class training difficult at universities. There is growing emphasis on project based learning (PBL) for addressing the above difficulties. It is necessary for students who would partake in PBL to have the basic abilities of planning, exercising, explaining the result. We implement a PBL oriented instruction (POI) in our teaching activity for product development. In this paper, we report our working results of POI concentrating on how draw out creativity and spontaneous attitude from students.

Although micrometer is a representative length measuring instrument, it is usually difficult for beginners to read the measuring value correctly because of its unique scale marking system. Therefore, the emphasis in the educational practice and training program of mastering micrometer was mainly put on how to read its scale. However, with the popularization of micrometers with digital displays, the scale reading becomes much less important. On the other hand, our comparison of measuring operations between skilled workers and beginners showed that the situation of contact between the micrometer′s spindle and the measured object seems more important than the scale reading itself. Particularly, the measuring force applied when the micrometer comes in contact with the measured object should always be constant, and the control of the measuring force has become an important skill for mastering the use of the micrometer. In this study, first an apparatus to measure the measuring force of the micrometer was developed. Then, the force applied by workers under different skilled levels was investigated by using this apparatus. Furthermore, related educational practice was conducted and the result showed that the developed apparatus was quite effective in measuring skill training.

Hitachi Technical College has the curriculum includes eight-minutes speech contests to improve communication skills. Contests are held every month. Students choose to talk about their experience or beliefs. Two students are awarded a prize for excellence, and the overall winner advances to the finals. This is how I taught the skills for the speech contests to students in my class. Out of ten contests, ten students from my class took prizes for excellence, which is half of all prizes awarded for excellence, and five winners advance to the finals. Teaching communication skills produces positive results for students; they learn about the structure of speeches, how to construct their own logical speech, and it helps them to improve their public-speaking abilities.

This paper discusses an output activity for a large-size English class with students of various levels of English proficiency. This output activity was created using free lesson construction software Hot Potatoes through consideration of the results and problems found in our previous research, and based on findings in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). The activity was posted on the open-source e-learning platform Moodle, and students checked their output using their own personal computers after having completed face-to-face reconstruction practice. As a result, student reaction suggested that this activity could benefit large-sized and mixed-ability English classes.

In this study, the numbers of earned PhDs in various countries were analyzed with macroeconomic indicators. We found out a linear relationship between the number of earned PhDs and GDP. However, Japanese value is far less than this trend. With cluster analysis, the countries were divided into 7 clusters. Comparing to the countries in the same group, who are developed economies with huge manufacturing and service industries, Japanese value is once again smaller. Historical data showed that Japanese value has already been saturated in relatively lower level comparing to the countries like Germany, UK or Korea. All analysis showed that Japanese value is significantly less than other countries. This must be further analyzed and we should take measures if needed.
