Robocon (Robotics competition) is a process of devising mechanisms, electronic controllers, and both microcomputer hardware and software to win the game. It is a decision-making process, in which students must first clarify the game structure and rules to identify both the constraints and the context in which the robot will be used. The next stage is to create design concepts for the robot to realize the strategies and tactics of the team. The stages of defining functions and specifications, and detail design of the robot follows. This paper proposes teaching methods and design reviews to enhance the learning experience students gain through Robocon.
National College of Technology focuses on developing of human resources with outstanding capacity for technological development. In the education for electronics engineering technicians, it is necessary to teach the knowledge of Op-Amp which plays critical roles in various electronic circuits. In a real-world classroom situation, however, we constantly face the problem of lack of measurement hardware because each student needs a function generator and an oscilloscope to learn the signal amplification circuit of Op-Amp. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a method to learn the signal amplification circuit of Op-Amp using “SoftOscillo2” .
For building the sustainable society, much more fulfillment of environmental education is demanded in the education field. The current university students tend to be interested in the environmental issues, waste sorting and recycling, but are slow to carry out their environment-conscious behavior actually. In this study, for the students at the faculty of education, the possibility of improving awareness of waste sorting and performing environment-conscious behavior was investigated by manufacturing the device which peels the label of the plastic bottle and having the students using the trash boxes operate it. As a result, it was clear that the students not only become interested in the device, but also tend to perform the practice of waste sorting actually.
A flowchart template was prepared for learning chemical experiments using a freeware, Dynamic DrawTM. From deciding that the flowchart was the chart indicating the process of operations and change in the state of chemical substances, the symbols meaning substances, laboratory apparatus for accumulating substances and unit operations were mainly used in the flowcharts. The prepared template was consisted of a chip table for storing the flowchart symbols and a work sheet for drawing flowcharts. The symbols were easily able to be copied from the chip table to the work sheet. It was inferred that this template was useful for drawing flowcharts and understanding the essentials of chemical experiments from the results of a questionnaire and multiple choice tests for students.
One of main goals of school education is cultivation of human resources who are happy working for society. In this paper, first, I explain that continued learning, innovation mind and practice are necessary for continuous working in global competitive knowledge society. Second, I propose early career education since first year through university, and active learning class with main free-style making product task. About active learning I propose concrete class design consisting of lectures, exercises, and main free-style making product task. And I report the class design is verified about plural classes including classes that were only lectures. Finally, I insist on the necessity of new system supporting graduated people for continuous working in global competitive knowledge society.
We propose to develop an educational tool on the subject of hand winch which can help educate students on designing and manufacturing processes of mechanical engineering. First, the educational process and the design specification were presented. Second, each mechanical part was designed through basic strength calculation on the base of the design specification. Third, the hand winch was sketched to assemble the designed each mechanical parts. The 3D-modeling was then performed using soft of SolidWorks. Fourth, the sketched hand winch was manufactured using basic machine tools. The manufactured hand winch was met the design specification through performance testing. Finally, the hand winch was demonstrated at open campus. Visited junior high-school students express a considerable interest in the hand winch. It is considered that the developed educational tool can be interesting to students of mechanical engineering course.
In this paper, We examined the instruction method using verbal expressions which are easier for students to understand the entropy concept, when explaining the concept of entropy to them in the lecture of thermodynamics. The verbal expressions used in this paper were selected from our previous studies, which examined the correlation between the entropy value and psychological quantity caused by words. Using CG-animation-contents simulating the molecular motions, we examined which word is the best expression to explain the entropy concept among "randomness", "disorder", "ambiguity", "the degree of diffusion" and "the difficulty of capture". As a result, we obtained that "the difficulty of capture" is relatively useful for understanding of the entropy concept.
Recently, the Project Based Learning (PBL) has been widely spread in engineering education all over the world. However, in our study in Egypt in 2011, the authors found that learners faced to the difficulty to adapt them into new learning approach, and pointed out the necessity of the course design with consideration of leaners‘ learning experience. In this work, the authors discuss the design of the PBL course in Egypt through making comparison analysis of the learners‘ learning style between undergraduate and graduate students based on Kolb‘s learning style theory. The survey revealed that undergraduate and graduate students have a significant different learning style, and the authors suggested the necessity of the design the course which enhances the Concrete Experience and Reflective Observation of learners.
This study aims to consider how to advise students before and after regular examination. Questionnaire about planning objective and achievement was be conducted three times. The relationship between planning objective and achievement was tested. The academic results estimation model was developed. The gradual change about planning objective and achievement was analyzed. The results showed that the students who performed poorly during the exam have a tendency to think optimistic about planning objective, and the possibility of not being able to achieve the goal. It was obtained that the students who got good exam result have a tendency to achieve the high planning objective, and to have a satisfactory exam result. In addition, by repetition of planning and reflecting about exam, it was clarified that students planning objective becomes an achievable plan.
Recently, the standard drafting system has changed from 2D-CAD (2-Dimensional Computer aided Design) to 3D-CAD in industries and educational institutes. Manual drafting may be instructive for beginners, therefore it is taught in most mechanical engineering courses before students are introduced to CAD. While 2D-CAD is roughly analogous to manual drafting, 3D-CAD requires both a different skill set and a contrasting way of thinking. The authors survey how the senior students evaluate manual drafting exercises and then 3D-CAD drafting exercises. From the results of the questionnaire survey, it was found that while manual drafting can be time consuming and tedious, the thought process allowed for a better understanding of drafting.
