An effect of presentation on improving levels of understanding is discussed and reported. In order to improve understanding levels of students, traditional lectures and experimets are not sufficient. We consider that a learned knowledge will be refined through presentation to other person. The understanding levels will be also improved through discussing with listener of the presentation. We assigned our students a presentation task at open campus. They presented about Fleming’ s left hand rule to guests. In this paper, it is evaluated that the understanding levels of students is improved through presentation.
Recent globalization has increased the importance of English education in Japan. Research universities, including Nagoya University, need to publish a large number of papers on international journals to earn higher reputation. The author has organized lectures and seminars to provide the opportunities to learn the technical English writing skills needed by students and faculty members in the engineering departments. This paper introduces the contents of the lectures and seminars, and the analytic results from a survey conducted. The results indicated that many Japanese engineering researchers are not able to release English papers without the support of proof readers. It is the conclusion of this paper that there is a strong need among engineering majors for skills on judging “proper English sentences” that clearly portray the intended meaning.
This paper details an international exchange program at Oita National College of Technology (ONCT) held in the spring of 2014 to host short-term foreign students from the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering of Singapore Polytechnic. Throughout the program, the visiting students collaborated with domestic students on creating electronic devices and robot-controlling computer software for 6 weeks. The students from Singapore also participated with Japanese students in two types of electronic control competitions after having created finished products together in groups. The results of a questionnaire answered by both student groups showed that they shared a significant gain in technical knowledge and deepening of cultural understanding of both countries.
Receiving engineering doctorates in Japanese universities plays an important role in career passes of international students. In this paper, career passes of 1373 foreign recipients of engineering doctorates in seven Japanese universities were investigated. Compared with graduate students from China and Korea, a higher proportion of graduate students from other Asian countries, Africa, Central, and South America tends to get jobs in their home countries after getting engineering doctorates. About ten percent of international students moved to countries other than their home countries before or after getting engineering doctorates in Japan. Besides movement to U.S., Europe, and Australia, movement within Asia and Africa is also active.
We improved a problem-based learning (PBL) program as an introductory course in chemistry. PBL in general encourages the students to manufacture something freely, but in chemistry field such a free activity is restricted by risks in experiments. In the new program, we separated manufacturing from PBL. We made a short laboratory experiments before discussion in the class rooms. Management of contaminated water in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was set as the problem to be tackled. Peer and self-assessment suggests that our program successfully motivated the students to learn chemistry. It is also suggested that appropriate subjects, corresponding to difficulties involved in e.g. a misbuilt robot or an inactive circuit, are indispensable to work PBL effectively.
A lot of manufacturing equipment and processes must be generally required for fabrication of semiconductor devices, and it is difficult for many colleges of technology to make the semiconductor devices in engineering experiments which are regarded as important at colleges of technology. It is expected that students studying at colleges of technology effectively acquire expertise in semiconductor engineering through the practical experience of experiments. Therefore, we developed an educational resource of silicon solar cell fabrication. The fabrication process of silicon solar cell is simplified by using PSG thin film as a thermal diffusion source and also a metal mask to form aluminum electrodes. Then, this educational resource of Si solar cell fabrication is introduced and utilized in an Engineering Experiment.
This paper clarifies the current situation and challenges of training vocational training instructors by the concept of emotional labor. In Polytechnic University, vocational training instructors are being trained to provide skills of manufacturing to job seekers in a short period. However, the group of trainees consists of people with different age, gender, knowledge and technology levels, so the vocational training instructors are likely to have difficulties. This paper therefore examined the process where vocational training instructors consider various differences of trainees and motivate the job seekers to voluntarily start their job search as their basic “emotion control ability” . This paper reports an education and training that combined video teaching material and practical education for new instructors to acquire the ability.
Engineering Clinic Program (ECP) is engineering education based on academia-industry collaboration, and is different from education based on an ordinary graduation thesis. Several programs in ECP have been revised to seek for better education. ECP has been provided to students for 15 years. Therefore, there are the cases of graduate participated in ECP program for liaison. Because young engineer participates in ECP for liaison, as for the ECP program, there is one side of continued engineering education. In this paper, the details of the ECP program that graduate participates in and questionnaire result to graduate are indicated.
This study proposes an original active learning method using a supply chain management (SCM) game. This method involves human resources to create a trial-and-error approach for obtaining an optimized solution for SCM issues. We develop a cross-platform online SCM game using non-conventional techniques. This study applied the SCM game in lectures delivered in two universities. In one, there were approximately 100 students in two 90-minute lectures, and in the other, there were 20 students in three 180-minut lectures. The results showed that most of the students in both universities realized the bullwhip effect and the importance of information sharing in SCM spontaneously. Particularly, the results of the game correspond to the practical reality regarding the SCM issues.
Engineering ethics was introduced in Japan in the 1990s. The important institutional factors were the establishments of the APEC Engineer agreement and JABEE. In addition, a series of serious accidents and crimes related to science and technology that occurred in the same period in Japan has often been mentioned as a societal factor. Therefore, I have investigated the relevance of the various historical events and the popularization process of engineering ethics by retrieving and counting the number of newspaper articles that include the keywords. As part of the results, an overview of some differences in the timing and intensity of the social concerns raised about the ethics of scientists and engineers and various correlated factors has been provided.
