The American Society for Engineering Education began in 1893 as the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education. From the 70 charter members, the membership has grown to over 400 academic institutions, 50 corporations, and 11,660 individuals. ASEE is dedicated to furthering engineering education through excellence in teaching and research throughout the United States and internationally. To this end, ASEE has worked closely with Japan in establishing JSEE. Today, ASEE values its partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding with JSEE and looks forward to continued communication and cooperation.
Photonics Center at Osaka University has been a world-class center for research, education and industrial collaboration in the field of photonics for the past 10 years. Particularly, for the past 5 years, Photonics Center had a JSPS-funded Asian Core research program, which was aimed on collaborative research in the field of photonics through the exchange of students and young scientists between Japan and three other Asian countries. This program successfully completed in March 2016 with highly productive results and was evaluated very high by the JSPS. After the successful completion, we applied for and were able to secure a new JSPS-funded Core-to-Core program for another 5 years. With our past experiences, international networking and growing research ideas, the new program includes 11 different countries and is not only limited to Asia, but also involves USA, UK and Australia. We will discuss more details of the international research collaboration activities in the past 5 years, present status and future prospective.
This article describes a review of transformation from engineering design education to innovation education toward value creation. In particular, while some general backgrounds on the trends of manufacturing industries and design engineering are reported tentatively, several practices of education system reformations at Osaka University are briefly reported with examples of project-based learning subjects.
For leading projects to be innovative, it is mandatory to motivate each member within a project team as well as to enhance effective communications among team members. The speaker, today, has established an entrepreneurial venture company based on new technologies developed through promoting projects, in which team members in different fields need to cooperate and work together. For promoting this type of projects, the speaker has realized that it is useful to apply psychological approach and eliminate stress caused by traumatic experiences, which project members usually have. In this paper, I will describe about how I was first introduced by psychology and how psychology can help developing innovative and successful project teams based on my experiences.
This article reports and discusses an English lesson based on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) conducted at a national college of technology. The CLIL lesson aimed to teach English for science and engineering, as well as contents such as design, processing, and specified engineering issues. Students were asked to write an assemble instruction of a model car in groups after engaging in its related tasks:classifying materials and their properties, and understanding physics and mathematics expressions. The results from questionnaires given to the students and graduates of the college and our reflection on the lesson suggest that the engineering students found CLIL effective for language and content learning while the engineering teachers of CLIL need to improve their language teaching skills.
In National Institute of Technology, Gifu College, we have a class of Measurement Engineering in fourth grade of Department of Electronic Control Engineering. In this class, Microsoft Excel is used for education. Excel has many functions and Analysis ToolPak which is an Excel add-in program that provides data analysis tools for financial, statistical and engineering data analysis. These functions and Analysis ToolPak are very useful for measurement engineering. In addition, for this class the Excel is also used for regular examination. In the examination, some macro functions run on computers such as entering a password and so on. From some results of questionnaire survey, it was appeared that using Excel was very useful for this class.
The trial of teaching in a large-sized lecture class was carried out at the National Institute of Technology. The result showed that the class enables the teachers to secure more research time of their own and at the same time it provides them extra time to carry out supplementary classes for students of lower and higher groups. The authors of this paper positively introduced “group works and harder lectures” into the class, hoping to improve the result of final academic achievement. Consequently, the results of the final achievement test showed little difference compared to smaller classes, though some results of the class evaluation questionnaire came down a little. In addition to that, the distribution of the score of the regular examinations was no different. This trial convinced us that teaching in a large-sized lecture class would be effective in reducing the burden of teaching, and that this teaching method would be a reasonable and good strategy for the future.
New KOSEN teachers give lectures to students almost immediately after got one’ s position. And they are also under obligation to give the class management, educational guidance, mental health care and etc. for students as a member of teaching group. Therefore, new teachers must prepare the fundamentals of above educational skills. Furthermore, its improvement is required. The mainstream of new teacher development in each KOSEN campus is “OJT:On the Job Training” . In this study, we produced “Educational Skill Archive” that it is compose of various video clips. In the video clips, the experienced teachers advise the point of education. We suggest the specific model of training for new teachers that used the Educational Skill Archive together with OJT. It solve peculiar problems of usual KOSEN teacher development.
This paper discusses an education program in which elements of computer system-related manufacturing can be extensively experienced through fabricating a game controller with a feedback function and a small burden of software development. It reports the results from a trial run of the training that was conducted with 25 first year high school students, and demonstrates the results from a survey based on a t-test and factor analysis. For 30 items in the survey comparable with the previous year, the average scores for all items were higher for the current training participants, and in 20 of those items, there was a significant difference in confidence level of 95%. As a result of conducting the factor analysis, it was confirmed that the training has a strong effect in improving problem solving ability and the desire to do so, and that it is useful in considering their future career path. These results show that the whole program has achieved its objectives and the cost is in a reasonable range.
It is very important for the university student to be assisted the passionate and skillful person who is able to teach them aware and experience to the students for future career achievement. One of choices for strategy is growing the visiting professor program for effective education system while minimizing expenses of the university budget. In the department of mechanical engineering, Hokkaido University of Science we decided to introduce a work experience person in large companies dare. In this paper we get a conviction and report a fact, because a visiting professor from a large corporation who brought huge effects of career education.
This paper deals with the development of a desktop safety simulator to ensure safe lathe turning. The revolving center plays an important role of holding the work against come-off and fly-off. The necessity of using the revolving center depends on the protrusion length of the work from the chuck. However, the judgment of such necessity is too difficult to make for beginners. In view of the above, this study intends to conduct experiments of risky work come-off and fly-off. When the cutting conditions are inputted in this simulator, the cutting conditions is judged dangerous or not and WORK FLIED is displayed on the PC screen. The operator can safely learn how the work comes off and flies off.
In this paper, we propose an RT educational tool to support learning frictional phenomenon in a high school curriculum of physics. Students can see and feel physics phenomenon associated with the theory from the tool. This tool calculates a coefficient of friction from directly measurable quantities which are the frictional force and the normal force, and shows their values and a theoretical equation with a liquid crystal display. We gave a class to two groups under different conditions. Group-A is traditional classroom learning, and group-B is with the RT tool. We carried out a questionnaire survey about each class, and tested students’ comprehension on the class content. As a result, Group-B with the RT educational tool improved an understanding level and a result of the test together, and statistical significance was confirmed, although limited to a friction phenomenon.
Student habits of engineering departments related to academic results have been investigated by using Student’ s t-test and Man-Whitney U-test of statistical hypothesis tests. Based on the questionnaire data about well-regulated life habits, there was a significant difference between the group of students with higher academic results and the group of students with lower academic results;for example, students who go to bed early tends to get better academic results than students who do not go to bed early. Several student habits such as eating breakfast every day and long staying in the university were correlated with academic results. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the two groups with respect to student habits such as ways of spending their free time:internet surfing, talking with friends by mobile-phones (including e-mail), playing video games and so on.
There are many ways to improve of classes;just a years of experience, ability of interesting everybody and also masterly storytelling. However, this paper described the effective improvement of classes independent of career in teaching and skills of talking. And also, the methodology of communication card to build the good relationships between teacher and students were discussed. This type of communication card includes the assessment of interesting and degree of comprehension, and free description area on questions and comments every class. By applying this card as a not only using communication tool with students, but also effective tool to grasp the request of students on classes, it was found that the favorable relationships with students was constructed without long term of experience and skill of talking. As a result, this kind of relationships made class advancing.
