    At the present time circumstances around universities change on a large scale and students are in more severe situations than before. Therefore the problems which students have are complex and more difficult to solve. One professor or one counselor for one truant is beyond his capacity. Plural and trained staffs from various fields must grapple with one truant’s problems. This paper points out truant’s reasons as follows maladjustment to small group, inexperience to laboratory work, uncooperative attitude for professor’s experimentation, etc. Moreover, this paper introduces prevention and treatments for truants through concrete examples.

  • -Using 4 Year Panel Samples of Under-graduate Students

    This study intends to grasp 4 year time-series change of generic skills of under-graduate students by using PROG test. Panel samples are 36 students who entered department of civil engineering and urban design, Hiroshima Institute of Technology, in 2012. They took PROG test every year and before graduate they answered questionnaire about activities and consciousness during under-graduate course. As a result, we classified 4 types of student group based on their generic skills scores. We found some relationship between students’ type and their activities to promote their generic skills.

    CanSat is a can-sized satellite model, which includes the main functions of a real satellite. For students having prior experience with CanSat production, we developed a mission planning variation CanSat kit, which includes electronic devices, control programs, and documentation. A CanSat Production Course was held during KOSEN Space Camp in September 2016. KOSEN students produced distinctive CanSats with CanSat kits. The following day, students competed with each other for CanSat data acquisition. Based on the participants’ questionnaires, we evaluated the educational benefits of CanSat production. This CanSat kit enables groups of students to experience mission planning, production, experimentation, and analysis. This is a practical application of Project Based Learning (PBL).

    In recent years, the problem of shortage of successor in manufacturing industry in Japan has been concerned. In this paper, it has clarified the existence of other reasons for causing crisis of manufacturing by the following analysis. It is still a lack of understanding from the company and the support from the government, as well as lacking of studying about re-educating issue by the universities in Japan. There is a positive correlation between public expenditure on studying and making improvement of productivity. The enhancement of learning opportunities is necessary to overcome international competitiveness. Based on the analysis and evaluation above from our research, we are starting to promote the unique brush-up program.

    We have developed an educational resource of silicon solar cell fabrication. The fabrication process of silicon solar cell is simplified by using PSG thin film as a thermal diffusion source and a metal mask to form aluminum electrodes. Then, this educational resource has been introduced and utilized in an engineering experiment. It is expected that this educational resource is attractive for students and also children who are interested in science and technology. Thus, in this study, we report an application of the educational resource of silicon solar cell fabrication to the Return and Spread Program of the Result of Research by KAKENHI for junior high school students.

    First-year programming courses in departments of computer science contain a mixture of novice and experienced students. It is therefore difficult to optimize the organization of classes to meet all student needs. Students also have varying degrees of motivation to participate in lectures and differences in comprehension levels. Since 2013, we have been implementing self-paced learning plans in programming courses through team-teaching. In this study, downloadable PowerPoint slides and video-streaming resources were provided to the students as preparatory materials for the lecture in order to effectively support their various learning styles. This study describes the implementation of our course and provide insights from the survey on lecture preparation and submitting their programming exercises.

    For nurturing the children who represent the next generation, much more fulfillment of environmental education including the energy problems is demanded. Especially, it is necessary for junior high school students to get interested in the natural energy through environmental education. This study dealt with the wind power generation as the natural energy. The effectiveness of the experiment-teaching materials of the wind power generation and the possibility of improving their awareness of the natural energy were investigated by using the sail wing type windmill. As a result, it was clear that the junior high school students not only become interested in the natural energy but also tend to consider its necessity for our life actually.

    This study proposes a new mechanism for training specialists who are conscious of disinterest in science through implementation of science class for elementary and junior high school students in university lecture. This paper summarizes our activities over the five years, and shows the educational significance and results. University students will learn about science education, safety education, and improve their qualities as instructors by not only devising science experiment themes but also implementing science class. Participating students will raise their interest in science, feel university students close to them, promote a wide range of careers, including the go to university.

    Synthetic design thinking is needed to create innovative products. We propose an educational method for creative design that can enhance a person’s ability to generate a new products’ concept that are not extensions of existing ones. The method starts with a person coming up with a concept based on ‘intuitive synthesis’ in which the metaphor of a ‘product like a living thing’ is instinctively created; details are confirmed by ‘analyzing and investigating’ the concept’ s characteristics, followed by an ‘experience’ of the product and the scene in which it will be employed using a virtual reality device. Based on this method, a design engineering school was carried out. Students enthusiastically joined this program, and their outcomes were pioneering previously non-existent products.

    One of the important things in scientific experience is to nurture the students’ continuous interest in science. At NIT, Fukui college, some open lectures by the technical staff have been held since 2011. These lectures were aimed at being enable the students to carry out experiments at home after the lectures, and to cultivate their continuous interest in science. We tried to achieve our purpose, and analyzed the results of the questionnaire answered by the students of these open lectures. As a result, more than 80% students gave their positive responses as to their understanding, interest, and further eagerness. In addition, more than 40% students attended several lectures. This result showed a positive influence of the continuous interest in science by our lecture on the students.

    Projector screens and electronic files are often used to communicate information in the classroom. However, issues with these methods include variable visibility depending on seating location and effort to create operation manuals. With a desktop screen distribution system, the operation screen is distributed to the student’s PC, thereby mitigating these issues. Furthermore, an Audience Response System (ARS), as a bi-directional classroom tool, increases student motivation to participate in classroom activities. We have developed NetScr, a teaching support tool that combines the functionalities of screen distribution and ARS. This study investigates the effectiveness and usefulness of NetScr based on data obtained from classroom practice and students’ evaluations.

    The problems faced in the educational field for engineering are a small birth rate and a low priority ranking for engineering among young people. These tendency makes a decrease in the level of student’s studying skill and motivation to the field of engineering. The Center for Innovation and Creativity Development of Tokushima University investigates creative method for students and helps students’ independent activity. They develop their creative skill through their group activities. Especially, they can steadily improve their knowledge of science in the process of teaching several scientific works for the children. By the experience of these activities, we realized that the education from the children age is efficient for raising a motivation to science and engineering. According to the foundation of “Science and Engineering Network, Tokushima” as a Nonprofit Organization, the activity is now spreading among children and their parents.

    This case study introduces an example of cooperation between a KOSEN and a graduate school from the viewpoint of the transition of the number of entrants to graduate schools from KOSEN advanced engineering course. Due to an increase in the number of students going to graduate schools in urban areas from the KOSEN located in the local city, the department became the most popular place to go to school. This leads to an excellent junior high school student taking an examination of this KOSEN and can maintain the level of the KOSEN. On the other hand, graduate schools can continue to accept excellent students from the KOSEN advanced engineering course, which will be beneficial to both KOSEN and graduate schools.

    CanSat is a can-sized satellite model used for varied space technology educational experiences. We have been developing CanSat kits including parts, instruments and manuals, while new CanSat compact, lightweight kits have been developed for beginners using Raspberry Pi Zero small microcomputers. National Institute of Technology (KOSEN) students made CanSats in the CanSat course in September 2016. They also submitted experiment reports containing the results of CanSat production and data discussion. Based on results of the reports and questionnaires, we evaluated the kits and production course. A reasonably sized model rocket could possibly launch this light CanSat. Thus, our CanSat kits would be useful for teaching materials, providing engaging high-interest space engineering experiences enabling understanding of satellite development.

    Questionnaires were conducted for Southeast Asians who got bachelor’s or master’s degrees in countries other than their countries of origin and then got engineering doctorates in seven Japanese universities. They were asked why they moved within three countries. Popular reasons for movement to other countries were because they wanted to polish their career abroad positively. Popular reasons for movement to Japan were also because they liked Japan or the research or education level in Japanese universities was high. Scholarships or recommendation of supervisors were also direct incentives. Some graduates got scholarships of governments or universities of their countries of origin, which implies that governments or universities supported their movement to Japan strongly.

    This study examines the practice of the “Useless Manufacturing Contest” in the “Study Build-up 2” component of a lecture taught at the Aichi University of Technology for training in manufacturing. Students seek to expand their manufacturing knowledge through low-cost and devised manufacturing and their experimental capability through “Shotgun Presentation,” both of which are essential for engineers. In addition to that, it is considered to constitute the relation between student’ s GPA and the products made by him/her.
