    Liberal arts education is attracting great interest in term of source of innovation to comprehend social needs and acceptance of technologies. However, the engineering has not been sufficiently included in the conventional liberal arts education, despite of its significance in modern society. To incorporate engineering in the liberal arts education, the following approaches are discussed. Engineers should learn social science and humanities to understand social needs and to enhance communication skills, and acquire generic engineering principle which is common in all engineering field. General public should develop technological literacy to ascertain the possibilities and limits of technology. Public, including engineers, should know nature of engineering to communicate each other, and obtain ability to identify the risk and benefit of technology.

    Based on the norms and notions described in the classic engineering books with reference to Japanese and Chinese (Kao Gong Ji) engineering classics, the insufficient parts of the current Japanese engineering education pointed out at World Economic Forum Annual Meeting Davos 2019, their remedy is proposed. This paper clarified that the human image of engineers and the principles of manufacturing that had been handed down to the Japanese, and educational methods necessary to realize them.

    Tokyo Tech faculty members and staff began developing online courses hosted on the edX website in 2014, by working with student teaching assistants (TAs). In 2016, Tokyo Tech received a grant from Japan′s Ministry of Education (MEXT) to establish a Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) educational training program using both coursework taught for credit and on-the-job training (OJT) to development students′ online course-making knowledge and skills. Furthermore, GSAs were actively involved in assisting instructors in teaching undergraduate courses in the classroom and online forming a “learning community” with students, peers, instructors and staff. GSA online course development skills and learning analytic skills were also sharpened by holding workshops on campus with experts. In the Coronavirus era, where education has shifted to online content delivery exclusively, training GSA to create online courses is a practical way to support faculty, develop new online courses for the general public (outreach) as well as to train doctoral students who will become future academic faculty.

    This paper proposes the program of practical training by using developed experimental DC motor control system. In control engineering, it is important to training in practical control design based on control theory. The developed experimental system realizes effective motor control training for beginner, because, that is made low-cost, and easy use for students. The practical experiment program is based on general designing of control system. Students learn the modeling process by step response test, design process of PI speed control system, robustness to disturbance of the control system in the program. The effectiveness of the education has been verified from the examination results of control engineering and the report evaluation of the experiments for the past three years.

    Online education has been rapidly introduced to universities worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As both students and universities have recognized the advantages of online education and it is unpredictable when the pandemic converges, the combination of face-to-face and online classes is assumed to be the new normal in university education. This study aims to explore the issues and potentials of online education at universities in the with- and post-COVID-19 era, focusing on students′ learning attitudes and performance and their preference of learning environments. Student survey results revealed that online classes have several unique advantages such as repeated self-learning and that the combination of face-to-face and online classes may complement each other′s weaknesses and provide better engineering education for university students.

    This paper aims to clarify the efficiency and viability of remote instruction by using ICT tools to make communication more understandable, which can lead to the quality assurance of efficient research instruction and supporting autonomy for graduate students. There is an increasing need regarding how to properly instruct students who are studying abroad through the means of remote teaching and how to assure their educational quality. Thus, the first experiment was conducted on both a remote instruction and a face to face one with respect to the graduate theses. Prominent features were extracted from the usage history of the ICT communication tools used in the initial year of the instruction. Remote instruction was also conducted during the second year and qualitative data was obtained via an interview survey with graduate students. The findings show that remote instruction is more effective and increases the possibility of teaching graduate level thesis research.

    We constructed VR system that enables mutual criticism while experiencing the students′ architectural design works in full scale. The features of this VR system are the following two points; multiplayer mode in which multiple people can view as avatars at the same time was realized, and a parameter of occlusion culling for smooth drawing was clearly given. We asked university students of architecture to try mutual critique of their architectural design works using this VR system. As a result, not only design concept of each building but also a lot of detail ideas on their building surface were mutually conveyed.

    This paper describes on-campus workshop on occupation implemented in cooperation with industry and academia. In order for students to experience internships appropriately, an on-campus occupation workshop was held at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Fukuoka Institute of Technology as an opportunity for them to consider their occupations early. The content of the workshop that appeals to the awareness of students considering electrical work as an option was considered through industry-academia collaboration. At the occupation workshop, explanations and practical exercises were conducted while showing concrete materials such as photographs and drawings so that students could imagine what the work of electrical construction management would be like. The students answered in the questionnaire that they were able to understand the outline of the four main tasks of construction management: “schedule control”, “quality control”, “cost control”, and “safety control”. Therefore, it is considered that the on-campus occupational workshop was able to provide students with useful information and experiences.

    The purpose of this research is to accumulate case studies of robotics education so that we can evaluate and share the educational effects of robotics. We examined robotics education using competitions focusing on motivation and sense of achievement. We also introduce a summary of the learning content, the competition, and other elements of robotics education in which each student constructed an autonomous robot. We conducted a questionnaire survey at the end of each class and at the end of the whole curriculum to verify the educational effects. The results of the questionnaire and the circuit exercises showed that robotics education using competition is effective in terms of arousing interest and promoting understanding. However, these effects occurred only in the latter half of the curriculum.

    The purpose of this study was to reflect on the course design and learning outcomes of community-oriented project-based learning practiced during the COVID-19 pandemic and to consider future prospects. The learning contents of the course comprised three classifications: acquiring skills such as systems thinking and data analysis; engaging in collaborative activities with teams and local stakeholders; and applying specialized expertise to design exercises. The first half of this paper describes the purpose, contents, concept, and methodology of the community-oriented PBL. The second half of the paper analyzes and discusses the results of two questionnaire surveys administered to the students who took the course and describes future prospects.

    Contest style practices in paper crane making have been conducted for an introductory education to mechanical engineering at a national institute of technology. The specific instructions were based on a hypothesis that the successful experience with personal record was effective. The previous paper on the instructions during the first five years indicated that it was desirable to revise the hypothesis with learning together in group. New instructions following the revised hypothesis have been carried out during the second five years. They brought some responses, the recorded progress of the crane works, the point rise in questionnaire, and the increase in the number of descriptions on students′ reports. These numerical results show that the learning quality can be raised higher than before.

    In this study, CLIL lecture was designed to create English interaction in the common science class of engineering education. CLIL lecture was given in the chemistry class of the first-year students in the National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), Ube College. Students could explain the theme to others verbally and writing. We found a certain improvement in vocabulary and English writing after taking the CLIL lecture by the analysis of questionnaire and report. Moreover, we observed students′ activities by the quantitative content analysis. As the results, English description with respect to chemical details improved gradually after taking CLIL lecture. Thus, we provided the practical opportunities of English interaction by this CLIL lecture.
