    Hurricane Katrina, which hit New Orleans in 2005, was a large-scale natural disaster. The notable textbook of engineering ethics includes Hurricane Katrina disaster. However, it has been debated whether this case should be used as a case study. The present study surveyed this dispute and examined the employability of the Hurricane Katrina disaster as a case study in engineering ethics. The author found that the objective of the case method used determines the usefulness of the disaster. Furthermore, this study argued that the example of Hurricane Katrina, a prominent large-scale disaster, is indispensable for education in engineering ethics.

    Although cross-disciplinary team learning has been proposed, there have been few studies that have evaluated its effectiveness quantitatively. In this paper, we have conducted PBL training for teams with the same curriculum and specialties (single-disciplinary teams) and teams with different curriculum and specialties (cross-disciplinary teams) over the past four years. Based on the results of the PROG (Progress Report on Generic skills) test before and after the PBL exercise, we examined and analyzed the difference in competency between the single-disciplinary teams and cross-disciplinary teams, and showed that the students who participated in the cross-disciplinary teams tended to improve their personal skills in the PROG test.

    After the Corona disaster, the correlations were examined between seating location of students in classroom and their ability of building up a network of connections or their academic performance in slide-based face-to-face lectures at the beginning of two courses. The results showed that the ability of students seated in front of the screen on the corridor side tended to be lower, while those seated in the back on the window side tended to be higher. When the academic performance was evaluated using GPA (Grade Point Average) and the average percentage score of the unit examinations, the correlation was different for students between seated on the vertical rows in front of the screen and on those not in front of it.

    Recently, the utilization of many Nano-Satellite that have been launched in low Earth orbit is gradually increasing. Furthermore, as many organizations have been launching and operating them, various industries started to mass-produce nano-satellites. It is important to improve the skills of space development engineers and encourage new entry. In this research, we developed educational materials of the satellite that allow practical training. In addition, we planned and implemented a training course using the educational satellite.

    In this paper, by measuring EEG during the Kraepelin test, it was clarified that the optimal rhythm which maximized the number of answers was found to be 1.2-times, when the rhythm answering without rhythm was set at 1.0-times. It was clarified that when the optimum rhythm was listened to, the ratio of power spectrum for relaxation/concentration was higher, the standard deviation of that ratio was smaller, and the activation of the left and right brains was not unbalanced. The power spectrum of the EEG while listening to the rhythm and answering the Kraepelin test was estimated from the EEG when answering without rhythm, and the error was less than 10%.

    LEDs can be used as optical sensors. They are inexpensive and compact, making it possible to install them in large quantities in equipment. These advantages make it possible to acquire a large amount of measurement data in a short time. This is very convenient for college laboratory experiments where time is limited. Teaching materials have been developed to improve statistical thinking through figuring out and considering phenomena from data. The practical results showed an improved understanding of data processing and statistical thinking. These results indicate that the experimental apparatus using LEDs as optical sensors and its measurement data can be utilized as practical teaching materials for statistics and data science. Teaching materials which cover all processes from measurement to statistical evaluation are necessary for developing of human resources that will be responsible for the future.

    This study examined Self-Objective Based Learning (SBL) -type lecture in the field of business administration. First, practical SBL was introduced in business administration course in collaboration with company and then questionnaire survey was administered to students after the course. The free-response statements in the questionnaire were analyzed in conjunction with the students′ grade data. The results of the survey suggested that students with lower grades set themes without much thought and conducted research on themes by simply searching the Internet, whereas students with higher grades set themes after careful consideration and referred to a variety of sources including academic papers and securities reports in their research methods.

    There are some ways to visualize radiations. In this paper, we use a neon hodoscope, a cloud chamber and a web camera. We take a questionnaire from students and analyze it to make vectors. To improve this method, we take an almost same but slightly different questionnaire from the other students. We evaluate the effect of the visualization of radiation on students.

    In order to provide effective design thinking education, it is essential to understand how the content of discussions affects the artifacts. This study aimed to investigate how discussion components contribute to the quality of group artifacts. The evaluations of all groups’ artifacts and the content of their speeches were categorized, and the number of speeches was counted. The group with the highest evaluation of the artifacts had more speeches than the lowest, with about twice as much divergence and convergence. We found that in creative problem-solving in groups, it is essential to utter a variety of problem spaces in the problem analysis phase and to repeatedly examine combinations that suit the needs envisioned in the creation phase.

    We designed an exploratory and interdisciplinary class for FYE (First-Year Experience) to continue fostering a “zest for life” which is aimed to be nurtured in high schools and to connect the FYE to specialized education for cultivating engineers with an understanding of management, which is a characteristic of our faculty. In this class, students practiced problem finding and problem solving from the viewpoints of SDGs through cross-departmental TBL (Team-Based Learning), aiming to learn “trade-off ideas” and “effective use of resources” . In the design and evaluation of this class we have introduced the ARCS model, therefore the results are based on the model.

    In this paper, we analyzed the survey and results on basic knowledge and elementary concepts of chemistry in an institute of technology and clarified the actual condition of students’ misconception. The difference of the mastery situation of the basic knowledge may prevent the right mastery of the basic knowledge by the accumulation of scientifically wrong recognition. Such scientifically wrong recognition is called “Naive Concept” , and it may become a hindrance in learning the advanced special subject. Therefore, we investigated the status of possession of simple concepts and acquisition of basic knowledge on chemistry by first and third-year students in an institute of technology. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained:(i) In both the first and third-year students, many incorrect answers suggesting the possession of naive concepts are found in the low percentage of correct answers to the survey questions. (ii) The percentage of correct answers in the third-year students is almost the same as in the first-year students. Furthermore, the tendency of errors in the free response columns is also similar. This indicates that the naive concepts of third-year students have not been corrected despite having taken chemistry in the first and second-year students.

    This paper reports the implementation of the “Flipped Classroom” in the class about chemistry to solve the problems of conventional classes. The implementation was carried out by active learning based on the knowledge gained by watching video materials as preparation for a lecture. The effects and the results of these practices are evaluated through questionnaire survey among the 161 students who participated in the “Flipped Classroom”. The percentage of positive evaluations in terms of satisfaction towards the classes increased after the “Flipped Classroom” is introduced. These results showed that the “Flipped Classroom” explored in this study has certain benefits, such as helping the students to increase their motivation to learn, to be accustomed to the learning, and to increase their learning time outside the class.

    In recent years, the difficulty of systematic human resource development in the machining industry has become an important management issue for small and medium-sized machining companies. To address these issues, this paper interviewed managers and factory managers of 11 small and medium-sized machining companies, as well as teachers at technical colleges. Furthermore, a qualitative analysis was conducted to identify issues in the industry that are closer to the actual situation, and to compare issues between companies and school education. As a result, it was suggested that there were three major problems, lack of educational resources, lack of motivation, mismatch with existing educational methods.

    This study tested the hypothesis that the practice of a training plan, devised by the players themselves using project-based learning (PBL) in club activities, can enhance athletic performance as well as the fundamental competencies for working persons (FCWP) among high school (HS) students. HS baseball players attempted PBL for three months. They participated in a baseball performance test and filled out an FCWP questionnaire before (Pre) and after (Post) PBL. The pitching and batting performance and some factors of FCWP score tended to increase in Post compared with Pre. The results suggest that the practice of a training plan designed by the HS baseball players themselves through PBL enhanced not only their baseball performance, but also their FCWP.

    Due to the government’s declaration of a state of emergency, it was difficult to manage the exercise courses because the students were unable to come to the campus. The author implemented Docker for the virtual machines used in two exercise courses, “Advanced Topics in Media Informatics” and “Media Informatics Major Lab/Exercises B”. The lecture and exercise were conducted via online. Both courses were completed without any serious problems, and the engagement of the students seemed to be increased, suggesting the high educational effectiveness and usefulness of the system. A questionnaire survey, which was conducted after the courses, showed that the system was generally well received, and the space-time independence of the system was also highly evaluated by the students. Especially during “Media Informatics Major Lab/Exercises B” , the students were spontaneously working far beyond the regular class time.

    In this study, students’ works in a university architectural design and drafting class were incorporated into social VR, and an attempt was made for teachers and students to conduct mutual criticism in a virtual space. We developed the functions required for mutual criticism using the VRChat SDK and confirmed that it works well. In addition, multiple students and teachers entered the virtual space and critiqued the student’ s design work. The sense of volume of the building and the size of the space were shared between students and faculty members, suggesting the possibility of using it not only for the final presentation but also for the conceptual stage. On the other hand, the unsatisfactory texture of the building and landscape was left as an issue.

    Authors have developed learning materials for active learning that attract students’ interest. Students could directly touch and handle these learning materials and understand its mechanism. However, the cost and time were required to produce these materials, it was difficult to disseminate them widely. Therefore, we built a virtual training facility where students can view and experience the learning materials in a virtual space using VR technology and a VR Head Mounted Display. The virtual training factory, built on a platform with real images captured by a 360-degree camera, is suitable for safety education because students can view the images with a sense of reality by use of mobile phone. In future education, it is necessary to construct a learning environment in which students can learn freely without discrimination.

    Before the COVID-19 pandemic, a digital transformation of student experiments was considered an important educational issue at Oita University. Due to budget shortfalls, however, progress on the educational issue was extremely slow. Then, in December 2020, we launched a new project for the digital transformation of student experiments in response to the strong demand for the prevention of COVID-19 infection. As a result of the cooperation among members of several faculties and the financial support by the president of Oita University, we have improved student experiments that were previously difficult to perform. In this paper we will report examples of improvements in several student experiments in our project.

    In addition to the basic knowledge of mathematics, it is necessary to grasp the essence of the problem, select appropriate mathematical methods, and analyze the problem mathematically from several points of view. From these reasons, National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), Sasebo College established the “Program for Fostering Engineers Specializing in Industrial Mathematics” in the advanced course from 2016. In this report, we introduce the outline of this program, and analyze the results of the questionnaire survey on the educational effects of this program.

    The selection criteria and the selection results of a distance learning assignments on “mechanical design and drafting” considering the “Corona disaster” and assignments by using Onshape, such as the Shako vise and manual winch are studied, were examined through the actual confirmation work by the students in the author’ s laboratory. It was found that Onshape was effective for distance lectures on mechanical design and drafting, and for providing an environment for conducting collaborative assignments. However, it also became clear that there are technical issues to consider when using Onshape to perform the drafting of a classic manual winch. The actual lecture management was conducted in collaboration with the university’s technical staff. The effectiveness of the collaborative lecture by the teaching staff and technical staff is described.

    Several tens of hours are required to mix and sinter powder materials to produce high-temperature superconductors. Therefore, it is challenging to use them as experimental subjects. For 110 K class bismuth (Bi) -based high-temperature superconductors, we specifically confirmed the superconductivity phenomenon when the mixing time was shortened. Next, the superconducting material contents of the electronic material were taken up twice during the lecture. The experiment, in which the powder material was mixed during the lecture, and the superconductor sample was cooled to the liquid nitrogen temperature, was performed. Elements of superconductor production and evaluation were incorporated into the lecture. The demonstration experiment during the lecture stimulated the motivation and interest of the students. This paper reports the preparation method of the proposed approach and the questionnaire results after execution.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual situation regarding the lessons related to manufacturing in preschool-elementary school cooperation; the extent of knowledge that kindergarten, nursery, and elementary school teachers have about the tools used in manufacturing; and the way they perceive the timeliness of the tools to provide useful materials for creating preschool-elementary school cooperation curriculum. Consequently, approximately 60% of elementary school teachers and 80% of nursery and kindergarten teachers answered that they would like to collaborate on a class regarding manufacturing in the future. Elementary school teachers had more knowledge regarding seven tools listed in junior high school technology textbooks than kindergarten and nursery teachers. Regarding the timeliness of tools, certain tools (for example, a file and a screwdriver) were suggested to be used by simplifying and limiting their usage.

    This paper shows a consideration for improvements of teaching materials for linux device driver programming considering intrinsic motivation, which are proposed in the reference1). The main improvement points are, the replacement of body, moving mechanism, and single board computer, and the addition of game controller, I/O circuit design flexibility, function for program execution from web page, and function for playing mp3 music file, in the core material. The class practice in Bachelor′s degree of Polytechnic University of Japan using the improved teaching materials shows that the educational effect for Linux device driver programming is enhanced compared with the results in the reference1).
