In order to obtain the fundamental data necessary for mechanization of harvesting and processing of sugar cane, we performed the experimental measurement of the labour strength and working efficiency of the manual operation for reaping, topping, stripping and binding of sugar cane.
The results were as follows:
1) On the labour strength, using relative metabolic rate, (R.M.R.) as index, it was found that R.M.R. of reaping was 8.3 and the highest among the four kinds of work and followed with stripping 7.5, topping 5.6 and binding 5.2 in lower order. But these values must be examined in full again.
2) Reaping and stripping were very hardwork, required full body force in short time and rest time every 2-5 minutes.
3) Working efficiency of stripping was the lowest among the four works and 70% of total labour hours of four works was consumed by stripping.
4) The result of working efficiency were as follows; topping 864k
g/man-hr, reaping 769k
g/man-hr, binding 587k
g/man-hr, and stripping 118k
g/man-hr, respectively.
Above results suggest clearly the importance of the mechanization of reaping and stripping.
