JOURNAL FREE ACCESSTwo thousand three hundred and sixty seven male and female of age 40 and over in inland Farm Village G and in Pacific rocky coast Fishing Village R are investigated on stature, body weight, grasping power, upper arm circumference, skinfold thickness, serum cholesterol content, specific gravity of blood, blood pressure and urine findings. Results follow: 1. Farm villagers are smaller than fishing villagers in both stature and body weight, and have more thickset physique than the latter. 2. Males in the fishing village are superior to that in the farm village in both upper arm circumference and grasping power, though in female grasping power it is in reverse. 3. Although no difference is found in both skinfold thickness and serum cholesterol content between males of two villages, by female, farm villager are rather greater than fishing villagers in both measurements. 4. On specific gravity of blood, both male and female in the fishing village are greater than farm villagers. 5. Difference of blood pressure level is small between two villages, though the difference is found by some sex and age group assortment. By female, diastolic level is a little higher for the farm villagers than for the fishing villagers. These results seemed to be related to the difference of the habitual diet : farm villagers more depending on rice and lack in protein, fat, calcium and some vitamins.View full abstractDownload PDF (1705K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSerum total calcium, serum, total magnesium, serum total base, serum CO2 content and serum CO2 binding capacity were measured for 2071 persons of age forty and over at Farm Village G and Fishing Village R in Tohoku region of Japan, on which backgrounds were described in the first report of this series. The distribution and the levels of the blood values were compared between the two villagers by age class. 1. Serum total calcium were steeply distributed, and the distributions mostly fit normal except some age classes both in farm village and fishing village. The level of serum total calcium gradually lowers in advancement of age in both villagers, and the tendency is more remarkable in the farm village. The difference of the level between the two villages is significant for male by probability product. 2. Values of serum total magnesium distributed normally for almost all age classes of both the farm and the fishing villages. The levels of almost all ages were higher for the fishing village, and the difference was distinct by probability product through all age classes. 3. Also the serum total base values distributed normally for almost all age classes. The difference of the levels between the two villagers was not observed when calculated by probability product through the age classes. 4. The values of serum carbon dioxide content and carbon dioxide binding capacity in serum showed normal distribution for all age classes. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn the 39th International Contest of the?gMiyasama?hSki Convention, the performanceof selected players for the Olympic games, ordinary players, and foreignchampions during the game were photographed with Nicon-Super-Zoom 8 from the lateral direction for form analysis. In selected players for the Olympics and ordinary players, the action during training was photographed with a Sony videotape recorder for comparative analysis. The following results were obtained in essence . 1. The form of selected players was not much different from that of ordinary players during games and training. 2. Both the selected players and ordinary players exhibited a difference between their competition and their training techniques . The form during competition was inferior to that during training. 3. While scarcely any difference was noted between foreign champions on one hand and selected and ordinary players during training on the other, anterior sl, anting was more notable in foreign champions. 4. The form of selected and ordinary players during traing was similar to that of foreign champions, exhibiting a rational form. 5. It appears desirable to guide Japanese champions to maitain their form during training right through competition.View full abstractDownload PDF (813K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn this study of cross-country skiers, a videotape recorder was used along with 2 cameras and a telemeter for simultaneous EMG leads from f, 8 poles to simultaneously record the EMG and observe behavior in the same picture. The following results-were obtained from analysis. 1. From the upper extremity system, the selected and ordinary players gave marked muscle discharges from the pushing of the stock to the release. However, a sudden decrease of discharge was noted in selected players but not in ordinary players. 2. From the lower extremity systm, a marked discharge was noted at the moment of the thrusting of the ski both in selected and ordinary players. In other phases, the discharge was greater in oreinary players than in selected players. 3. In selected players, concentrated muscle activity was noted but none was seen in ordinary players, also without the relaxed state.View full abstractDownload PDF (2374K)
